At the age of 19, Zakhar's biography changed dramatically: together with his brother and parents, May went to the USA. In America, I remembered my youthful passion for music, but earned money by getting a job as a programmer. For 15 years, starting in 1988, he lived in Baltimore and New York. Then he moved to Chicago, and from there he moved to San Francisco. In 2002, Mai unexpectedly returned to the city of childhood, where he continued his musical career.

The musician's debut took place in 1987, when May lived in Kharkov. The first composition with the telling name "The refrigerator is empty" brought him fame among the local public. On the wave of success, Zakhar performed at the festival of author's songs "Eskhar", which is annually held in the village of the same name near Kharkov.

In America, the creative path of the Ukrainian singer continued. He became interested in folklore and rock, sang the hits of Soviet pop stars and composed himself. In the USA, Zakhar May recorded 5 albums. The first listeners were emigrants from Russia and the former Soviet republics, but it did not work out with concerts in America. Music lovers could appreciate the work of the performer in the chamber atmosphere of the apartment building. The collection "Ground Zero", which included the songs "Cheerful Gypsies" and "Everything Reminds of You", was especially popular with the emigre party.

Returning to his homeland, Mai tasted glory. Now his performances took place in concert halls and clubs, and his discography was replenished with new albums. Having settled at first in the city on the Neva, the singer actively collaborated with St. Petersburg musicians. Soon, with his light hand, the legendary group "Shiva" appeared, which music lovers jokingly called mythical.

In addition to May and Chizh, the team included musicians of the DDT group, known throughout the post-Soviet space, Igor Dotsenko, Andrey Muratov and Andrey Vasiliev. Igor Romanov joined "Shiva", in whose biography he worked in no less legendary rock bands "Alisa" and "Earthlings". This line-up, led by May, presented music lovers with the album "Black Helicopters". The collection includes the popular song "God is not a fraer".

A special feature of the Shiva group is the temporary, “fluid” composition of musicians. Alik Potapkin and Nail Kadyrov, Alexey Mogilevsky and Maria Nefedova performed at the concerts of the collective. According to Zakhar's plan, famous rockers took part in the performances of "Shiva" in their free time from the concerts of their groups. None of the musicians knew at what point they would appear in the provisional composition and with whom they would go on stage.

Later in an interview, the shocking singer admitted that "there is no Shiva group, and there never was."
