Biography
Passionate about the seventh art, the young Yves Boisset began by writing reviews on this subject, then collaborated with Bertrand Tavernier and Jean-Pierre Coursodon on the book "Twenty years of American cinema". At the same time, he familiarized himself with film sets by working alongside great directors - such as Yves Ciampi, Sergio Leone, Jean-Pierre Melville and Claude Sautet - through the position of assistant director. It was in 1968 that he took the plunge by directing Coplan saves his skin, a small series B centered on the adventures of the spy Francis Coplan, a character he knows well since he was assistant director a year before, on Coplan opens fire in Mexico City of the Italian Riccardo Freda.
One of the main constants of his career lies in his enthusiasm to denounce, through cinema, some of the most glaring injustices in our society. The 1970s were not only the most prolific period of his career - he made 10 films for the cinema during these years, including several successes, both critical and commercial - but also the one that most characterized his ideological commitment which could be described schematically. as being "on the left". For Yves Boisset, the cinema is not only used to entertain, but must be seen as a means of pointing the finger at the ills of a society.
Several films he directed bear witness to this logic, most of which are inspired by real events, thus reinforcing the force of his point: Un condé (1970) draws a disturbing portrait of the police, L'Attentat (1972) focuses on the strange Ben Barka affair, RAS (1973) tackles the Algerian war by taking sides against the military leaders, Dupont Lajoie (1975) deals with the most repulsive ordinary racism, and Le Juge Fayard dit le sheriff (1977) s' insurgents against corruption in the political and judicial systems. Varying genres in works that have not lost any of their relevance today, the director also surrounds himself with the greatest actors of the moment, from Jean Carmet to Patrick Dewaere, including Annie Girardot, Bruno Cremer, Lino Ventura, Lee Marvin, or Michel Bouquet.
If Yves Boisset is determined to combat the dysfunctions specific to the governing structures of French society, his vision of the world is not, however, Manichean. As proof, he refuses to make a film on Mesrine - an emblematic figure of the insubordination to the powers in place - with Jean-Paul Belmondo in the role of public enemy n ° 1, because he does not want to diminish the side criminal of this man, something which is asked of him. Its objective is more to put in images ambiguous stories, by bringing the spectator to ask questions.
His films being for each of them formidable provocative and shocking pamphlets, Yves Boisset must fight against censorship: the army seeing with a dim view the realization of "RAS", groups of the extreme right rebelling against the film "Dupont Lajoie" by resorting to violence, Charles Pasqua - at the time secretary general of the SAC (civil action service) - forcing Boisset to withdraw passages in Le "Juge Fayard dit le Shériff", etc. . Examples of this type are numerous. But in the majority of cases, Yves Boisset recognizes that these controversies are rather beneficial, since they make spectators want to go see his films.
From the 1980s, Yves Boisset had less success, which did not prevent him from giving shape to certain ambitious works, faithful to his principles. After tackling pedophilia with La Femme flic in 1980, he directed Allons z'enfants the following year, based on the eponymous novel by confirmed antimilitarist Yves Gibeau. The film was a commercial failure when it was released in theaters, but is considered by its author to be the best of his career, or at least the most personal. In particular follows The Price of Danger (1983), an anticipatory film on the excesses of reality TV, subsequently plagiarized in Running Man (1987), with Arnold Schwarzenegger taking the role of Gérard Lanvin.
A bit like in the United States, where New Hollywood has gradually given way to mass entertainment, the French public tends to tire of the films launched in the late 1970s. Yves Boisset begins to turn to television, for himself. fully devote to it after La Tribu, his last film made in 1991. Even for the small screen, the filmmaker continues to deal with the strongest subjects - The Seznec affair (1993), The Dreyfus affair (1995), The Pantalon ( 1997), Jean Moulin (2002), L'Affaire Salengro (2009), 12 bullets in the skin for Pierre Laval (2009) - just like his positions which have remained intact. In 2011, he published his autobiography entitled "Life is a choice", reviewing the many adventures of his career.
