Biography
Yuri Shevchuk is a Soviet and Russian rock musician, author of his own songs and leader of the DDT group. The main theme of Shevchuk's poems is social satire and oppositional opinion. He sings many patriotic songs in which he protests war, violence, hatred between people.
Yuri was born in the village of Yagodnoye, Magadan Region. The family had two more children - sister Natalya and brother Vladimir. Little Shevchuk was drawn to creativity since childhood. At first he was very interested in drawing, and when the family moved to Nalchik, he added a music school to the art school.
When Yuri was 13 years old, he again changed his registration and moved to Ufa. There, the teenager continued to study the fine arts at the House of Pioneers and play the button accordion and guitar in the school ensemble "Vector". Already at that age, Shevchuk showed a rebellious character. In the 8th grade, he drew a crucifix on a T-shirt and made the signature "Jesus was a hippie", for which Yuri was arrested by the police.
After school, the young man decided to become a professional artist and entered the Bashkir Pedagogical Institute at the Faculty of Art and Graphics. He received a higher education, but in his student years, his love for paintings lost his love for rock and roll that had come into fashion. Shevchuk plays in the amateur groups "Free Wind" and "Kaleidoscope", receives awards for the lyrics of his songs, but is mercilessly criticized by the authorities for the musical genre and topical theme of the compositions.

Music
In 1979, Yuri Shevchuk was part of an unnamed group that rehearsed at the local recreation center "Avangard". A year later, the team received the name "DDT" and recorded a trial magnetic album. In 1982, the guys sent recordings of several songs to the competition, and the composition "Don't Shoot", written about the war in Afghanistan hidden in the Soviet Union, has a deafening resonance.
The album "Compromise", recorded at an underground studio, quickly becomes popular and puts "DDT" on a par with recognized St. Petersburg rock bands. Yuri Shevchuk had constant conflicts with the authorities, as they saw the songs as a way to show protest against the current government.
The "competent authorities" took up arms against the singer when he recorded the album "Periphery", in which he showed an unsightly life in the outback. The writer was accused of social rebellion and support for religion for the song "Let's fill the sky with kindness."
With the onset of Perestroika, underground groups entered the big stage, and "DDT" became one of the cult groups of Russian rock. The songs "Boys-majors", "I got this role", "Born in the USSR", "Thaw (Leningrad)", "Actress Spring" become favorite in the country. But the loudest compositions that have become Yuri Shevchuk's business cards were released already in the 90s. These are "Rain", "In the Last Autumn", "What is Autumn", "Agidel (White River)", "Night-Lyudmila" and others.
Despite the democratic changes in the country, Shevchuk continued to criticize the authorities. Both President Boris Yeltsin and the war in Chechnya, expressed in the song “Dead City. Christmas".
Another side of the artist's writing is the confrontation with pop singers. This was expressed in the compositions "Phonogrammer" and "Pops", criticism in the press.
Yuri managed to deliver a "blow" to Philip Kirkorov. Together with the former sound engineer of the king of the pop scene, he published on the Web a recording of real sounds produced by Philip for sound recording.
Then the ensemble took part in drafting a bill regulating the use of phonograms in performances.
In 1999, the author's biography was replenished with the publication of the collection of poems "Defenders of Troy". Ten years later, he published his second book, Solnik.
In the 21st century, the composer and singer continues to actively engage in creative work. The new songs are influenced by philosophy. Shevchuk raises the question of the insignificance or greatness of a person in the world, religious motives, love of life. Studio albums of the DDT group come out with enviable regularity, and Yuri does not republish old compositions, but constantly offers the listeners new items, of which it is worth mentioning separately "For those who were born this night", "Song of freedom", "This city", ".
On March 3, 2008, the composer performed the March of Dissent in St. Petersburg after the announcement of the election results.
The event that took place in May 2010 was brightly covered in the press. Then Yuri took part in a meeting with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin at the theater of Northern Palmyra. Shevchuk asked Putin if he was going to truly democratize the country, and whether there would be a persecution of the “March of Dissent” again. The vice president did not answer anything concrete. But Putin's question to Shevchuk: "What is your name, excuse me?" - became a famous meme.
Shortly before this, the authorities canceled the rock festival, which was organized with the help of Yuri. After that, the activist joked that if he went on stage with an instrument from the Lube ensemble, the authorities would appreciate it.
In addition, Yuri Shevchuk is given negligible time on television for interviews, demonstration of video clips and concerts.
In 2011, Forbes magazine included Shevchuk in the list of "50 main Russian celebrities" and said that Yuri's income was $ 1 million a year. The musician made a refutation.
Then, in 2012, the band's concerts in the cities of Siberia were disrupted.
Yuri Shevchuk also tried his hand at cinema. He participated as a cameo in projects and starred as an actor. Yuri played the main character Ivan Khristoforov in the mystical drama "Spirits of the Day", appeared in the comedy "Little Johnny", the historical melodrama "Once upon a time there was one woman," and the television series "Father", for which he wrote the soundtrack.
Yuri Shevchuk wrote music especially for films, for example, "The Geographer Drank the Globe", "Generation P", "Lord Officers", "Azazel" and others.

Personal life
Back in Ufa, Yuri Shevchuk met his first wife Elmira Bikbova. The girl at that time was only 17 years old, and she was studying to be a ballerina. After the wedding, the couple had a son, Peter. At the age of 24, after a long oncological illness, Elmira died. Shevchuk dedicated the album "Actress Spring" to his suddenly deceased wife, and wrote songs "Trouble", "Crows" and "When you were here" in memory of her.
Yuri raised his son on his own, and when the boy grew up, he entered the Kronstadt Naval Cadet Corps, served for some time in the Marine Corps, but later became a programmer.
Later, the musician became friends with the Russian actress Maryana Polteva, who gave birth to his second son Fedor in 1997. But the artists' bond did not last too long, and now Yuri rarely sees his second child: he and his mother live in Germany.
Today Yuri Shevchuk lives with a woman named Ekaterina. It does not cover his personal life, especially since the musician's new love is a non-public person, does not communicate with journalists, but constantly accompanies her husband on tours and travels. Yuri has no children from Catherine. In a conversation with the namesake - Yuri Dude - Shevchuk said that he was happy in marriage.
The DDT ensemble has a registered microblog on Instagram. There, the team members share with subscribers photos from performances, behind-the-scenes shots and home video sketches.
The artist spends a lot of effort and money on charity, but at the same time he does it almost secretly, not talking about such actions to the press and not advertising himself at the expense of the tragedy of other people. At his own expense, he drove people who suffered in Chechnya for treatment, bought prostheses and wheelchairs, transferred earnings from concerts to a fund to help victims of the wars in Chechnya, Ossetia and Ukraine.

Yuri Shevchuk now
In March 2018, Yuri Shevchuk presented a video for the song "When You Were Here". The composition is dedicated to the singer's first wife, Elmira Bikbova.
Earlier on the Internet, Shevchuk ran into the leader of the Leningrad rock group, Sergei Shnurov. Yuri said that Sergei's team cannot be called a rock ensemble, it is solid pop that is impossible to listen to.
Shnurov did not remain in debt and, in response to Shevchuk's criticism, said that after listening to the composition "DDT" I want even more silence.
In June 2018, the Invasion rock festival will take place in the village of Emmaus, Tver Region. It is not the first time for the DDT team to perform at the festival, but this time the organizers made Yuri Shevchuk the headliner of Invasion.
At the end of 2017, video blogger Yuri Dud took a long interview with the leader of DDT. The blogger and musician discussed a number of social and political issues and touched upon some aspects of the composer's personal life.
