Biography

The veteran poet Yuri Levitansky was famous for the melody of verse and philosophical understanding of reality. The tests that fell to the lot of the writer in his youth left an imprint not so much on the subject as on the tonality of the works.

Yuri Levitansky was born in January 1922 in a tiny town called Kozelets, one of the streets of which has been named after the poet since 2015. The small homeland of the writer is the north of Ukraine, and the boy's native languages were both Ukrainian and Russian, and the language of his ancestors, Yiddish, was not familiar to him.

The place of birth of Levitansky is the reason for the amazing fact that in different sources the poet's patronymic is written differently: either Davidovich, or Davidovich. Also, information about the exact date of birth varies: either the 21st or the 22nd is indicated.

A few years later, the Levitansky family moved to the southeast of Ukraine - their father was offered a job at a coal mining enterprise. The capital of the mining region then bore the name of the leader of all nations, and it was in the city newspapers of Stalino that the poems of a gifted guy first saw the light.

After graduating from school, Yura went to the white-stone and entered the IFLI - the forge of the Soviet humanitarian intelligentsia. The young man's plans were disrupted by the war - Levitansky volunteered for the front. According to the poet's recollections, the students enrolled in the Red Army were convinced that before the start of the school year, Soviet troops would defeat the aggressor.

In fact, the war for Levitansky lasted not even 4 years, but as much as 6 years, because after the warrior "plowed half of Europe on his bellies" and met Victory Day in Prague, part of him was transferred to Mongolia. Yuri went from private to lieutenant and received many military awards, including the Order of the Red Banner and the Medal for Military Merit.

After returning to civilian life, Levitansky settled in Irkutsk, where his parents, David Isaevich and Raisa Evdokimovna, already lived. The venerable writer Georgy Markov helped the writer with employment and housing: Yuri became the head of the literary department at the local operetta theater and received a room. Although already in the late 1940s Levitansky published his first collection of poems, in the mid-1950s the poet decided to continue his studies, interrupted by the war, and completed a two-year literary course. Since that time, Yuri Davidovich lived in Moscow.

Creation

Director Eldar Ryazanov, who dedicated a series of the project "Conversation in the Open Air" to Yuri Davidovich, believed that a person who is not familiar with Levitansky's poetry involuntarily impoverishes his life. The poet's work was appreciated by such writers as Yevgeny Yevtushenko, Vladimir Vysotsky and Joseph Brodsky.

Despite the front-line experience, in mature works Levitansky rarely spoke about the war. An exception is the poem “Well, what if I was there”, which has become a song. Yuri Davidovich's melodious poems were often complemented by music. The most famous example is "Dialogue at the New Year's Tree", which sounded in the film "Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears."

Levitansky was not enthusiastic about the transformation of poems into songs, believing that memorizing works in their original form, and not in a sung form, would be a great subject for the poet's pride. The writer was not afraid of verbal rhymes, for example, in the poem "Dream of the Piano" the complex rhyme "alive-adagio" is adjacent to such simple ones as "finished - rocked" and "mixed - outweighed".

In most of his works, Levitansky speaks with the reader about love, the transience of life (“How long have you bought the calendar”), the moral choice of a person (“Everyone chooses for himself”). In the poem "Cinematography" the poet compares life to a black-and-white film, the script of which was written by the Almighty.

In addition to lyric poems, Yuri Levitansky has books consisting of translations from Eastern European and Central Asian languages, and collections of parodies of the works of Russian-speaking poets.

Personal life

According to the recollections of his contemporaries, all the neighbour's cats purred to Yuri Levitansky and all the oncoming dogs wagged their tails. There were always children and women around the poet. The writer had a pleasant appearance (as evidenced by the photos, in his youth he resembled Lermontov) and amazing charisma. Three women played a special role in the biography of Levitansky.

The first companion of Yuri's life was the girl Marina, with whom the young veteran entered into an alliance in Irkutsk. After returning to the capital, this marriage gradually faded away.

The second time Yuri Davidovich married only at the age of 40. The chosen one was a student of the Literary Institute Valentina Skorina, who gave birth to three girls to the poet - Ekaterina, Anna and Olga. Former "reveler" Levitansky turned into a wonderful caring father who adored and nursed his daughters all day. Yuri Davidovich was engaged in literary work only at night.

When the daughters grew up, the poet, “learned to live late” and, it seemed, striving in his mature years to make up for the lost in his personal life during the war, fell in love for the third time. The last love of the writer was Irina Mashkovskaya, who was suitable for Levitansky as a granddaughter. With his third wife, Yuri Davidovich began life from scratch, leaving the previous family a multi-room apartment, a library and a dacha. This union did not give the veteran children, but became an inexhaustible source of inspiration for him.

Death

Death, to which Levitansky had "four steps" left at the front, overtook the poet 3 days after he celebrated his 74th birthday.

The heart of the front-line soldier required an operation in 1990. Emigrant writers who wrote in Russian (primarily Vladimir Maksimov and Joseph Brodsky) helped raise money and organize medical intervention in Germany. The operation was successful, and the poet enthusiastically joined Russian political life, striving for at least the grandchildren of the victors to live no worse than the defeated.

Levitansky advocated banning the Communist Party in Russia and stopping the counter-terrorist operation in the North Caucasus. The poet told President Boris Yeltsin about the need to end hostilities at the presentation of the state prize in the Kremlin in 1995.

The attitude of the creative intelligentsia to the fight against Chechen separatism was also discussed at a meeting in the capital's government in January 1996, in which Yuri Davidovich participated despite the prohibitions of doctors. The veteran's heart could not stand it, the cause of sudden death was a heart attack. On the day of Levitansky's funeral, Joseph Brodsky died at the Vagankovsky cemetery.
