Biography

Several generations of Soviet children grew up on the stories, stories and novels of the writer Yuri Koval. And until now, his work remains attractive for the modern reader who appreciates a lively, bright and capacious word. There were failures in his life: he was accused of anti-Sovietism, he did not want to print books. The literary leadership of the 70s of the last century demanded clarity from the writer, and he continued to invent his own worlds in which one could travel in search of the main Island of Truth.

Childhood and youth

Yuri Iosifovich Koval is the youngest son in the family of Iosif Yakovlevich and Olga Dmitrievna. The boy was born on February 9, 1938. It is known that his father served as the head of the criminal investigation department in the Course, and during the Second World War he fought banditry in Moscow. Mom worked as the chief physician of a psychiatric hospital in Polivanovo.

During the war, the family was evacuated to Saransk. Here Olga Dmitrievna was appointed to the post of Republican Minister of Health, she was entrusted with one of the important areas of work - the activities of rear hospitals. Yura's childhood was difficult - the hardships of the war years affected. I had to fully survive hunger and cold, to fight bone tuberculosis. But the writer never complained about difficulties in his biography.

The family was reunited in Moscow, and in 1945 Yura entered school number 657 on Chaplygin Street. It is not known how his literary fate would have developed if it had not been for his meetings with amazing people. Among them is the teacher of literature Vladimir Nikolaevich Protopopov, who was described by Koval in the story "From the Red Gate".

He was called strange and talented at the same time. But it was the teacher who discerned an outstanding personality in the quiet student and tried to fully reveal the talent of the future writer and poet. Koval, together with his classmates, began to write poetry, and in the 8th grade they created a secret union of poets. The creative association made the teaching staff and parents worry, but the adults, fortunately, figured it out.

After school, the choice of admission was predetermined - in 1955, young Koval submitted documents to the Lenin Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, to the Faculty of Russian Language and Literature.

The Pedagogical Institute of those times was going through its so-called golden age. Excellent teaching staff, brilliant students in their talents - famous in the future Yuri Vizbor, Yuli Kim, Petr Fomenko, Yuri Ryashentsev and others have formed Koval's worldview.

The first stories of Yuri Iosifovich appeared in 1956 in the newspaper of the pedagogical institute "Leninets", for which he received the first prize of 50 rubles. In addition to literary creativity, Koval also shows himself as an artist. He studies with the monumental sculptors Vladimir Lemport, Vadim Sidur and Nikolai Silis. He studies drawing, painting, mosaic, fresco.

Upon graduation from the pedagogical institute, Koval receives two diplomas - a teacher of the Russian language, literature and history, as well as a drawing teacher.

Yuri goes to his first job. By distribution, the writer ends up in the village of Emelyanovo in the Tatar ASSR. According to his memoirs, the first stories were the texts of dictations. Koval called it light hooliganism. After completing the due date, Yuri Iosifovich returns to Moscow and already here writes several stories related to Tataria.

Creation

One of the stories "October Soon" the writer shows Yuri Dombrovsky, whom he met as an illustrator of his book. The eminent writer was so impressed with Koval's prose that he decided to take the story to the Novy Mir magazine. But Dombrovsky was refused. Koval understands that he will never be published and he will not make his way in the world of adult literature:

The future of the writer is decided by chance. The poet Igor Kholin takes his poems for children to the editorial office of the Ogonyok magazine, where they were accepted and published. So Yuri Iosifovich is getting closer to his main destination - to children's literature. During this period, Yuri Koval worked as a teacher at a school for working youth. Soon he was invited to work in the editorial office of Children's Literature, from where he was fired six months later.

Koval was accepted into the Murzilka magazine, which at that time was considered a forge of writers. He is sent on a business trip to the border, to the border guards. From there he brings the story "Scarlet" and the stories "Visor", "White Horse", "Yelets" and "Special Assignment". For the writer, the period of torment ended and a lot of work began on prose, which made him a famous and beloved children's writer in the USSR.

In 1970, a collection of stories "Clean Dor" was published, which describes the life of the village and the inhabitants: uncle Zuya and his granddaughter Nyurka, Mironikha, Shurka Kletkin and other characters. There are many stories in his work, which are still included in the school curriculum for the study of literature. Among them are "Zero Class", "Fan", "Gray Night", "Hare Trails", "Kolobok" and others. Yuri Koval understands the main literary credo and begins to change genres of works.

The story "The Adventures of Vasya Kurolesov" was written in the genre of a humorous detective story. It turned out to be so successful that the writer receives the third prize at the All-Union competition for the best children's book. Koval continues the police trilogy and writes the stories "Five Abducted Monks" and "The Miss of Citizen Loshakov", based on which a film was made in 1991.

In 1972, Yuri Iosifovich was admitted to the Union of Writers of the USSR on the recommendation of Boris Shergin, whom he considers his spiritual mentor. Koval published his fairy tales in Murzilka, and in the late 1980s he wrote scripts for cartoons based on the works of Shergin.

During a trip to the Urals, and the writer was very fond of traveling, Yuri Koval ends up at a fur farm with polar foxes. After that, the story "The underdog" appears about a freedom-loving animal that escapes from the cage and seeks to get to the North Pole.

However, in this harmless plot, the censors saw an anti-Soviet allusion to "a Jew fleeing to Israel." Despite the difficulties, the story of the Arctic fox is still published, but the next book by Koval, "Five Abducted Monks", is deleted from the publication plan. The writer had to defend his rights to the collegiums of the Press Committee.

At the end of the 1970s, filmmakers shot two films based on Koval's works, "Napoleon III the underdog" and "Scarlet Frontier Dog", in which the writer's songs are played off-screen.

The story from the cinema continues when Rolan Bykov invites him to try himself as a screenwriter. The filmmaker wanted to shoot a film based on the story by E. Seton-Thompson "The Royal Analostanka". In 1990, Koval, based on the screenplay, will write the story about the cat "Shamayka".

The writer loved village traditions, he liked the northern Russian way of life and language. He visited small villages in which he lived for several months. After traveling along the northern rivers, Koval will write the story "The Lightest Boat in the World", for which in 1986 he will receive an Honorary Diploma of the International Council on Literature for Children and Youth.

Shortly before his death, Yuri Iosifovich finished work on the novel "Suer-Vyir", which became the largest work in terms of volume. In 1996, the author was posthumously awarded the Wanderer Prize of the International Congress of Science Fiction Writers.

On the sites dedicated to the work of Koval, the works of the master are freely available, as well as a photo chronicle with rare photographs from the family archive, interviews and articles about him.
