Biography

Yuri Bashmet is a famous Soviet and later Russian violist who proved to the whole world that the viola is a full-fledged solo instrument. In addition, Yuri Bashmet is a conductor, teacher and founder of the Moscow Soloists chamber ensemble.

Yuri Abramovich Bashmet was born in Rostov-on-Don into an intelligent Jewish family in January 1953. The musician does not hide his own nationality.

When the son was 5 years old, the family moved to Lviv. The head of the family, Abram Borisovich Bashmet, who worked as a railway transport engineer, was sent there.

Yuri Bashmet spent his youth in Western Ukraine. Here the violist took the first steps in music education: he graduated from a specialized music school. It is noteworthy that there were no musicians in the Bashmetov family. But relatives supported Yuri, discovering musical talents in the boy. And the final decision that the boy will study at a music school was made by his mother, a philologist by education. The woman took her son to an educational institution, choosing a violin for him. But there were no places in the "violin" class, and the Bashmets were offered the viola.

At first, the parents were puzzled: this unfamiliar tool was not even considered an alternative. But Yuri, who at that time was very keen on playing the guitar, agreed. A friend told Yura that learning to play the viola would take much less time than the violin. Thus, you can spend more time on your favorite guitar.

In 1971, Yuri Bashmet graduated from a special music school and went to Moscow. He entered the Moscow Conservatory, where he first studied viola, and then remained in the assistant, which he graduated in 1978.

Music

They started talking about Yuri Bashmet as a talented musician and violist while still studying at the Conservatory. After the second year, the violist performed in the Great Hall of the Conservatory. This performance brought the violist the recognition and respect of teachers and connoisseurs of classical music, but also his first earnings.

In 1972, Yuri Bashmet made a splendid purchase: an eighteenth-century viola by the famous Italian master Paolo Testore. Yuri paid a lot of money for him at that time - 1,500 rubles. Bashmet earned money himself, playing the cult "Beatles" on the guitar. Yuri Abramovich plays this instrument today.

The concert activity of the now world-famous violist began in 1976. Bashmet's playing was heard both in Russia and neighboring countries, and in the best concert halls in Europe, Australia, Japan and the USA. The Russian musician was the first in world history to give recitals on viola at Carnegie Hall, La Scala, London Barbican, Berlin Philharmonic, Tokyo Suntory Hall and several other iconic concert halls around the world.

In addition, Yuri Bashmet turned out to be the first viola player in the last 230 years who was allowed to play the viola owned by Mozart in Salzburg. This honor was given to Yuri Abramovich for the reason that he became the first musician in world history who managed to prove the possibilities of the viola as a solo instrument.

In 1985, the creative biography of Yuri Bashmet was enriched with another glorious chapter. The musician performed as a conductor for the first time. This happened in the French city of Tours, where Bashmet's friend, maestro Valery Gergiev, could not come. Yuri Abramovich was persuaded to take the conductor's stand. Unexpectedly, the musician liked this lesson.

The following year, 1986, Bashmet organized the Moscow Soloists chamber ensemble. The collective quickly became famous and began touring the world. But during a tour to France, the collective betrayed the creator: the musicians remained in the country, refusing to return to Russia. Yuri Bashmet returned himself. Fortunately, 6 years later, the musician assembled the second composition of the Moscow Soloists, which also became famous.

Since 1992, the musical life of the country is unthinkable without Bashmet's chamber ensemble. The Moscow Soloists' repertoire includes the widest range of music from different countries and eras. They recorded several discs and are actively touring all over the planet.

In 1994, Yuri Abramovich founded the first Russian International Viola Competition. In addition, the musician is the president of a similar English competition and a member of the jury for competitions held in Munich and Paris.

In 2002, the musician became the chief conductor and creative director of the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra "New Russia". Since that moment, the collective under the leadership of Bashmet has given more than 500 performances both in their native Moscow and on tour. The band's new performances are regularly featured on the orchestra's official website.

In 2004, the famous violist held the Yuri Bashmet International Festival. This event took place in Minsk, and the Belarusian pianist Rostislav Krimer was the co-organizer of the festival.

In 2005 and 2007, the musician received awards not for professional performances, but as a TV presenter and educator. The author's program of the violist "Dream Station" during these years received the prestigious TEFI statuettes.

Often, Yuri Bashmet gives recitals. The musician's and composer's interpretation of some famous works was recognized by connoisseurs of high music as outstanding. These are "Chaconne" by Johann Sebastian Bach, sonata "Arpeggione" by Franz Schubert and some others.

Yuri Abramovich is also known as a teacher. He gives his master classes all over the world. He is also the founder and president of the UK-Russian International Viola Competition.

Bashmet was awarded the title of People's Artist of the USSR. All his other awards are difficult to list due to their huge number. Several documentaries have been filmed about the famous musician.

Yuri drew attention to a charming girl at one of the student parties as early as the 1st year. But Natalya did not like the timid young man. But for Bashmet, the hobby grew into love. In her second year, the young violinist took a closer look at Yuri: at that time he had already loudly declared himself as a talented musician.

The couple got married in the 5th year. Since then, they have always been together. In marriage, a daughter, Ksenia, and a son, Alexander, were born. Parents, knowing that a career as a musician is hard bread, did not plan a future related to music for their children. But Ksenia nevertheless became an excellent pianist. The girl sat at the piano at the age of 5. The son received an economic education. But he also plays flute and piano. And he learned to play on his own.
