William Henry Cosby Jr. was born on July 12, 1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is one of the four sons of Anna Pearl (née Hight), a maid, and William Henry Cosby, Sr., of the US Navy.

After his father was drafted into the army, 8-year-old Bill, the eldest child, remained to look after the younger brothers, replacing their parents. The boy attended Mary Channing Wister Public School, was class president and captain of the baseball and athletics teams, played football and basketball. As a child, Cosby showed a penchant for acting, participated in school plays. The young man did not finish school, failed the exams in the 10th grade.

In 1956, Cosby joined the United States Navy.
