Biography

The clip "People's Day", bright and performed in grotesque Bollywood style, in the early 2000s could be seen on every music channel on Russian television. The songwriters, the Vopli Vidoplyasova group, became one of the first bands on the post-Soviet rock scene to play ethno-rock, and the first to sing only in Ukrainian.

Creation history and composition

Themselves about themselves "Vopli Vidoplyasova" ("Vopli Vidoplyasova"), or "VV", say that they are the same age as the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Indeed, the first date in the history of the band's creation is 1986.

Then the guitarist Yuri Zdorenko and Alexander Pipa, who played the bass, met the future vocalist of the band, the young engineer Oleg Skripka. He was then writing a diploma, and in the future he had a job on distribution in Severomorsk. However, this did not stop young people burning with the desire to make music, not science.

The fourth member of the team was Sergey Sakhno, who took the position of drummer. By the way, he was the only one of the guys who had a musical education - the rest were self-taught. Moreover, Pipa later admitted that he had never met a bass player worse than himself.

However, Alexander in the group was known as a noteworthy intellectual, and it was he who gave the name to the collective, recalling the graphomaniac Vidoplyasov from "The Village of Stepanchikova ..." by Fyodor Dostoevsky. The lackey called his works only "screams". This is how the group got a name.

Music

Before the formation of "VV" Zdorenko and Pipa played heavy metal in "SOS", but the style of the new group was more inclined towards rock and roll, which was incredibly popular in the USSR since the beginning of perestroika.

A year after the founding of the group, the musicians rehearsed and developed a repertoire, and in 1987 the debut of "Vopley Vidoplyasov" took place on the stage of the festival, which was organized by the Kiev rock club. The success turned out to be undoubted - "VV" was noted as "Group of the Year", and their composition "Yaroslavna's Cry" was recognized as "Song of the Year".

It's funny, but in the jury of the festival there were both metalworkers and "correct" Komsomol members at the same table. However, censorship in the USSR had already begun to give up positions, and one thing might not interfere with the other. Prize, 30 rubles, young musicians spent on drink. But the career of "VV" from that moment went uphill - at first they performed mainly in Kiev, but thanks to the song "Dance" they learned about the team in other republics of the Soviet Union.

"Vopli Vidoplyasov" took the diploma of the festival at the "Rock Forum 88" in Vilnius, appeared on the stage of the Moscow "Gorbushka", even starred in the second part of the French documentary "Rock around the Kremlin". The group's performances were held with invariable success - the national Ukrainian flavor became a fundamentally new stream of Soviet “non-format” music.

"Dance" for many years became a kind of "business card" of the group, especially after in 1989 a video was shot for the song. At first glance, there was nothing special in the black-and-white video, but it "caught on" - both with the sincere fun of the musicians, and a kindly parody of Soviet realities, with banners, slogans and solemn constructions.

In 1989, "Vopli Vidoplyasova" performed in Leningrad, at a concert organized by the famous Sergei Firsov, the last "head of Kamchatka". "VV" sang from the stage of the "Time" hall. In addition to them, in Leningrad that time, "GrOb" and Yanka Diaghilev made their debut, who had not yet become legends of Russian rock. The album "Dance", which the group recorded during this period, according to Alexander Kushnir, is one of the 100 best albums of Russian rock.

In the early 1990s, Vopley Vidoplyasov had a "French" period. First, the group went on tour in Europe - foreign listeners liked the flavor of Ukrainian ethno-rock. Moreover, the foreign public was interested in Soviet rockers, and not the Soviet diaspora, although the musicians continued to sing in Ukrainian.

The success led to the fact that in 1991, Violin and Pipa moved to live in Paris, where they remained until 1996. Local musicians Philip Mozha and Stefan Mouflier replaced the guitarist and drummer who had returned to their homeland. During this period, the administrator of the team was Marie Rebaud, a French woman, whom Oleg married and whose marriage broke up due to the return of Skrypka to Ukraine.

Also, with the departure to Kiev, the period of the international line-up "Cry ..." ended - Sakhno again took the drummer's place, but a new guitarist appeared - Evgeny Rogachevsky.

A year after returning to their homeland, "VV" recorded the album "Muzyka", which included such hits as "Spring" and "Yura". In 1998, the group delighted fans with the album "Land of Dreams", the main material for which were songs written in the early 1990s. This marked the beginning of the “VV” tradition to include old compositions in new albums.

The disc "Khvili Amur" took longer to write and was released in 2000. Along with the next hits, the song "Rozmova z Mahatma", the oldest composition of the group, became part of the album. But the main "dish" of the disc was "People's Day" ("A Dream on the Mountains") - a song in the music of which Ukrainian and Indian motives were intertwined. After the premiere of the video, the composition gained immense popularity and was not only regularly shown on television, but also sounded, as they say, “from every iron”.

The collective again began to actively tour outside the former Soviet republics - in 2000 "VV" visited Israel and the USA with concerts. How highly the group was appreciated in Ukraine is evidenced by the fact that during Bill Clinton's visit to the country, it was “Vopli Vidoplyasova” who spoke to the American president.

In 2006, "VV" recorded the disc "Buli Days", the release of which was timed to coincide with the group's 20th birthday. A year later, the team left the second founder, Alexander Pipa. The musician himself explained that he left "Howls ..." due to the fact that the group had a certain style, and in order to go beyond this framework, they had to go to other projects. Alexey Melchenko became the new bassist of the band.

In 2008, Vopli Vidoplyasova, initially distinguished by a high level of patriotism, recorded the country's anthem in a rock arrangement. In parallel with this, the group released a live album in 2 parts.

The band was popular in Russia, but since 2014, "VV" stopped coming on tour. At first, Oleg Skripka announced that the team was included in the "black list", but the Russian Ministry of Culture reported that this information was not true. Later, the lead singer of "Yell ..." confirmed that there is no ban on performances, but now they cannot go to Russia.

In 2016, "VV" celebrated the 30th anniversary of the group. Taking into account the claims of the fans, this time, in contrast to the 20th anniversary, almost the entire concert on stage was sung by "Howls ..." themselves, and not invited friends of the group. The team also arranged an anniversary tour, within the framework of which they traveled not only to Ukraine, but also to many other countries, including the USA and Canada.

fact

"Vopli Vidoplyasova" now

Now "Vopli Vidoplyasova" is one of the most popular Ukrainian bands both at home and abroad. The group regularly goes on tour and gives concerts in countries around the world. Russia, however, is still not included in the list of visited countries.

Skrypka visited the zone of armed conflict in Ukraine with concerts and gave concerts for the soldiers of the Ukrainian army fighting on the front lines, as well as for civilians. Among other things, the musician performed in the cities of the front-line zone and in hospitals.

Oleg, who declared his civic position during the Orange Revolution, has repeatedly allowed himself very harsh statements regarding the Russian language and Russia. For the words that ignorance of the Ukrainian language is a sign of "moronism" and a reason for being placed in a ghetto, the musician even had to apologize, such rhetoric was not appreciated even by the government of Ukraine.

In 2017, Melchenko left "VV", and Nikolai Usatyi, who had previously played in the "Animals session" group, took the place of bassist.

The team remains true to the spirit of national rock, but is looking for new ways of self-expression and creative growth. In particular, musicians try themselves in orchestral arrangements and experiment with electronic sound. They also continue to shoot videos - in 2018, a video was released for the folk song "Dibrivonka", which Oleg considers extremely relevant for the current situation.

The team does not have their own blog on Instagram, but BB have an official Facebook page. There fans can follow the band's tour schedule, find out the latest news about "Howls ..." and admire the band's photos and recordings from the concerts.
