Within Temptation is a Dutch band playing symphonic metal with gothic elements. Having become noticeable in the late 1990s, after the release of their first studio album, the band became famous in 2001 with the emergence of the composition "Ice Queen", which rose high in the charts and won a number of prestigious music awards.

Within Temptation was pioneered by vocalist Sharon den Adel and guitarist and singer Robert Westerholt. In 1996, the musicians teamed up and created a doom metal project called The Portal. The duo soon expanded with the arrival of Robert's former colleagues from The Circle, keyboardist Martin Westerholt, guitarist Mikhil Papenhove, bassist Jeroen van Veen and drummer Dennis Leflang. The group merged under the name Within Temptation.

In the first year of its existence, the collective experimented with the composition, in a short period they tried several masters of the rhythm section. First, Ivar de Graaf took the place of Dennis Leflang, after a while he was replaced by Richard Willemse, and then Siro Palma appeared, staying in the group until the end of the 1990s.

A major milestone in the history of Within Temptation came in 2011, when drummer Mike Colin joined the band, and lead musician Robert Westerholt refused to tour with the team and started raising children. The band's creator and leader focused on songwriting and studio work, and was replaced on stage by rhythm guitarist Stefan Helleblad.

The debut disc Within Temptation "Enter" was released by the collective in 1997 at the studio "DSFA Records". The album was written in the style of gothic doom metal and featured heavy guitar riffs and contrasting voices of vocalists Robert Westerholt and Sharon den Adel. In support of the album, the musicians organized a tour of Holland, culminating in a performance at the Dynamo Open Air festival in the Dutch city of Eindhoven. And then they took to the international stage, having gone to concerts in Germany and Austria.

In 1999, the group acquired a studio and began preparing material for a new disc. "Mother Earth" was presented to critics and audiences on December 1, 2000 and did not have massive success. Popularity came to the team after the release of the single "Ice Queen", which reached # 2 on the charts in the Netherlands and # 1 in Belgium. In support of the album, Within Temptation embarked on another major overseas tour in 2005, when they first performed headlining on the main stage of the UK's Bloodstock festival.

More than 400,000 copies of The Silent Force have been sold in Europe. The songs "Stand My Ground", "Memories" and "Angels" were released as additional singles to the new disc. The group received the 2nd Edison Award and was also recognized as the best and best selling collective in Holland. In 2006, the video for the song "Angels" was recognized as the winner in the "Best Video" category at the Golden God Awards.

The members of the group did not like the resulting video, and they completely redid it. In mid 2007 Within Temptation toured the US for the first time in support of "The Heart of Everything".

Within Temptation's new album, "The Unforgiving", was released in March 2011, based on the comic book by screenwriter Stephen O'Connell. The cover of the disc features a character created by the artist Romano Molenaar, and in the foreground is a photo of Sharon den Adel in a similar costume and identical pose. The album started at No. 2 in the Netherlands and hit the top 10 charts in many European countries. On June 10, the band released a bonus track with the song "Sinéad" and 3 remixes performed by European DJs.

Since the creation of "The Unforgiving", the musicians have changed the direction of creativity. They pushed gothic into the background and focused on symphonic processing of compositions. With an emphasis on promoting the new album, the team played at several major festivals, attended The First Challenge show, and then went on a European tour. In 2012, Within Temptation toured the South American continent.

After some time, the team presented to the public the announcement of a special show "Elements" dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the team. Within Temptation were set to perform with the original orchestra and guest stars and ex-band members. The concerts were sold out in Antwerp in November 2014 and then appeared on DVD titled "Let Us Burn - Elements & Hydra Live In Concert"

In anticipation of the anniversary, Belgian radio station Q-Music launched the Temptation Friday project, for which Sharon den Adel and other members of the group presented weekly covers of songs by famous artists in their characteristic manner. Within Temptation covered hits from Imagine Dragons, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, One Republic, Coldplay, The Who and others. In 2013, these tracks were released as a separate disc called "Q-Music Sessions".

Since 2012, the group has been working on songs for the next studio album. Before the release of "Hydra", the band released a mini-disc containing the song "Paradise", performed with Finnish singer Tarja Turunen, and demos of 3 new songs: "Let Us Burn", "Silver Moonlight" and "Dog Days".

The full version of the 6th studio album was released in winter 2014. The group returned to the top of the charts at home and abroad. Within Temptation has once again toured Europe, the United States and Canada. Tickets for the new show were sold out immediately after going on sale, with a record number of fans attending the mainland tour.

In the fall of 2017, Sharon den Adel announced her solo career and moved away from Within Temptation for a while. In early 2018, she admitted that she was ready to return to the team and work on new material.

In July 2018, Within Temptation signed to Vertigo Records Germany, which will release the band's new studio album worldwide, excluding Japan.
