The name of Viktor Tikhonov has been a symbol of Soviet hockey for many years. This is a well-known coach of the Soviet Union national ice hockey team, who managed to lead it to victory three times. He acted as a player for many years, and then built a coaching career.

Victor was born in the summer of 1930 in Moscow and spent his childhood in the capital. The boy's mother, Anna Ivanovna, worked in a blacksmith's shop, and his father Vasily Prokhorovich worked at a secret military plant. In 1941, the man was drafted to war, and a year later he died.

Mother alone raised two sons, because the father died when Victor was 12 years old. Already at that time, the future athlete was fond of hockey, but then it was only yard games, which the boy loved very much and every year he looked forward to the arrival of winter, so that he would go out on the ice with friends and play his favorite game.

The war years turned out to be difficult for everyone, and the Tikhonov family was no exception. Because of the outbreak of war, the boy left school. At the age of 12 he goes to work, then he worked as a mechanic in a bus fleet. For a whole year after the death of his father, he helped the family. At the age of 13, Victor began to attend school lessons again. After leaving school, in 1948, the young man began serving in the army.

The first sporting achievements in the biography of a hockey player appear from the moment he entered the ranks of the USSR armed forces. While serving in the army, he first participated in professional competitions, and the MVO Air Force club became the first sports team in Viktor Tikhonov's career.

In the command of the Air Force of the Moscow Military District, Tikhonov spent 4 full seasons, during which he became the champion of the Soviet Union 3 times. During the games, the man tried himself in different positions, but with each game he showed the best results as a defender.

At the age of 20, Tikhonov was awarded the title of master of sports, and after 3 years the young man joined the ranks of the hockey players of the Dynamo-Moscow club, which at that time was a symbol of real Soviet hockey. As a member of this club, Victor became the champion of the USSR more than once, and also won other prizes.

Tikhonov began to develop his coaching career when he finished competing as a team player. For this, the man went to Latvia and there he began to train the Riga "Dynamo". In the future, together they managed to achieve excellent results and win more than one gold medal.

For a couple of years of working together, he brought the club to the top division and helped the team take 4th place in the championship of the Soviet Union. This achievement is to this day the most impressive in the history of Riga "Dynamo".

In 1977, Victor returned to Moscow, where he was appointed coach of the USSR national ice hockey team. At the same time, the man is persuaded to lead the CSKA team, which in different years was coached by Evgeny Babich, Anatoly Tarasov, Konstantin Loktev.

The man refused the offer, because he believed that he had no right to take the place of Konstantin Loktev, because he led the team to victory in the championship. However, after a conversation with Andropov, Tikhonov nevertheless agrees and accepts the army club.

The man has been working with CSKA for 15 years. During this period, the team managed to win the USSR championship 14 times and the country's Cup 2 times. Also, under the leadership of Tikhonov, the army team received 14 European Champions Cups, in those years this award was considered the most prestigious trophy in the world of hockey.

As Tikhonov later admitted in an interview, the most important success of the man was the pupils. Many of those who were on the team during the coaching of Viktor Vasilyevich are recognized as world hockey stars. These are Vladimir Krutov, Vyacheslav Fetisov, Sergey Fedorov and others.

The Russian national hockey team led by Viktor was defeated for the first time in the history of Russian hockey in 1994. After this event, the man left coaching in the national team, but at the same time remained to work at CSKA.

By 2003, the national team had changed several coaches, but none of them managed to bring the team out of the crisis. Then Tikhonov was again offered to lead the team, and, despite his age (73 years old), the man agreed. However, at the 2004 World Championships, the team again performed unsuccessfully, and Tikhonov had already finally left the post.

For sporting achievements, the man was awarded the Order of the October Revolution, the Order of Lenin, the Order of Honor, and in 2010 the former coach received the Order of Friendship from Dmitry Medvedev, who at that time was the president of Russia.

The personal life of a sports coach was successful. In 1953, when the man was 23 years old, Tatyana Vasilievna became his wife. For a long period, the woman worked as a lawyer, she always wanted children and, despite the constant employment of her husband, she was there until the last days.

The couple had one son, who was named Vasily. Since the boy grew up in the family of an avid athlete, he also loved hockey and from childhood stood on the ice with a stick and puck. Already in adulthood, the man played hockey for a long time, and later worked as a coach in Russia and Finland. As a result of an accident in 2013, a man died.

Vasily was the only child of the Tikhonovs, and after his loss, his father could not come to his senses for a long time. The grandsons Tatyana and Victor became a delight for the man. By the way, the grandson of Viktor Vasilyevich, his full namesake, also became an excellent hockey player. To avoid confusion, in the sports environment, he is called Viktor Tikhonov Jr.

Today the young man plays in the KHL SKA club as a central forward. In 2014, the young man played in the Russian national team, he was recognized as the top scorer of the World Championship.

The last years of his life, Victor was ill. The first reports about the deteriorating health of the man appeared in the press in October 2014. A month later, it became known that he was in intensive care, the doctors fought for his life, but this did not bring success. At the end of November of the same year, Viktor Tikhonov died in the hospital, the cause of death was cardiac arrest.

After 3 days, a memorial service was held at the CSKA Ice Palace, which was attended by a large number of people who came to say goodbye to the athlete. Viktor Vasilyevich was buried at the Vagankovskoye cemetery, the grave is located near the burial place of his son. In memory of the great coach, all regular KHL matches that took place in the coming days began with a minute of silence.

After the death of her husband, in 2015, Tatyana Tikhonova decided to write a book in memory of him. In co-authorship with Dmitry Fedorov, the woman published the publication Life for the Name of Hockey.
