Women who have achieved success in professional sports sooner or later face the question of how to combine a sports career with family life. In this case, the issue of having children is especially acute. Some athletes refuse to procreate altogether, others have children in adulthood, after completing a sports career, and some take risks, giving birth to children almost between seasons and returning to the sports arena again. So after three years of maternity leave, biathlete from Ukraine Vita Semerenko returned to sports.

Semerenko Vita Aleksandrovna (according to her passport Victoria) was born on January 18, 1986 in the urban-type settlement Krasnopolye, located in the Sumy region of Ukraine. The girl was born into a simple Ukrainian family that has nothing to do with professional sports. In addition to Vita, the Semerenko family has two more daughters: Oksana (four years older than Vita) and Valya, Vita's twin.

Considering that the girls spent their childhood in a small village, they did not have a special choice of circles and sections. Only two sports were presented in Krasnopolye - football and cross-country skiing. After graduating from elementary school, Semerenko's younger sisters enrolled in the skiing section, despite their mother's slight anxiety. At first, the coach did not highlight the successes of Vita, but of her sister Valentina - the girl felt confident on skis and developed a decent speed.

And Victoria, at the insistence of the first coach of Shamray Grigory Ivanovich, preferred biathlon to cross-country skiing. While Vita had only three misses in shooting, Vali had only three hits on the target.

Vita received her higher education at the State University of Sumy, and the chosen specialty does not concern sports. Vita studied foreign philology and social communication.

The first serious competition in the life of an aspiring athlete was the World Youth Championship held in Finland in 2005. From Kontiolahti Vita brought home two silver medals. For the next year, the girl selflessly prepared for the XX Winter Olympic Games, but in February 2006, Valentina Semerenko went to the Italian city of Turin, and Victoria did not pass the selection.

But in the summer of the same year, Vita successfully performed at the World Championship, which was held in Ufa. Then the Semerenko sisters again turned out to be competitors: Vita won one silver and one bronze medal, and Valentina surpassed her sister by two silver medals.

But already in the next 2007, at international sports competitions among students, the girls changed places. The sisters earned four medals each, and finished holding hands, thus demonstrating that family relations are more important to them than sports victories. However, the jury recorded Vita at the finish line first.

The season 2006-2007 became the prime of Vita Semerenko's sports career in biathlon. During this period, the athlete was included in the top thirty and was recommended to participate in mass starts at the World Championship.

2008 was an important year in Semerenko's career. Taking part in the World Championship in Sweden, the Semerenko sisters, together with Oksana Yakovleva and Oksana Khvostenko, won second place in the relay race. In the winter of the same year in Austria, Vita earned a silver medal in the World Cup races. And three weeks later, Victoria and Valentina, together with Elena Pidgrushna and Oksana Khvostenko, won gold in the relay.

The sisters took part in the 2010 Winter Olympics, which were held in Canada, but performed less successfully than in other competitions, and did not bring medals home. But massive starts at the World Cup in Norway gave Vita silver.

In 2011 and 2012, Vita earned a bronze medal at the Biathlon World Championships. But in 2013, the Semerenko sisters and their team again earned gold medals in the relay race, which took place in Germany.

In February 2014, the Ukrainian took part in the Winter Olympics, which took place in Sochi, where she took second place. Although Vita finished third then, after Anastasia Kuzmina from Slovakia and Russian Olga Vilukhina. But later Olga was disqualified for doping, and Vita Semerenko received a silver medal. For the silver medal earned, the athlete, according to Ukrainian law, received an award of 80 thousand US dollars.

On August 23, 2014 Vita Semerenko was awarded the Order of Princess Olga of the 1st degree in accordance with the Decree of the President of Ukraine.

The return to the big sport in 2017 brought Vita Semerenko a number of significant victories. On the eve of the 2018 Olympic Games, Semerenko performed in a singles mixed doubles held in Sweden. In Austria, Vita finished fourth in sprint races, and in France she received a bronze medal. The athlete has high hopes for the upcoming Olympics in South Korea, where she plans to earn at least a bronze.
