Varg Vikernes is a Norwegian black metal musician and founder of Burzum. He gained worldwide fame not so much for his music, but for his political and ideological views and high-profile crimes: the arson of Christian churches, the propaganda of neo-Nazi views and the murder of his colleague. Varg today remains a cult figure in the Scandinavian rock underground, he writes books, maintains his own blog on YouTube.

The musician was born in the Norwegian city of Bergen in the family of an engineer and an employee of an oil company. At birth, the boy was named Christian Vikernes. His parents were unable to save the marriage, and at an early age the child was left without a father, in the care of the mother. According to the celebrity, Lena Bore - that was the name of the woman - was sympathetic to racist ideas and rejected Christianity.

As a teenager, Christian developed an interest in metal. His favorite bands at that time were Iron Maiden, Kreator, Celtic Frost, Destruction. Already at the age of 15, the young man led his own rock band, which was named Kalashnikov. Initially, the group was played by three people, including the leader, then the group expanded and became known as Uruk-Hai in honor of a variety of the orc people from the cult novel by John Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings".

Even then Vikernes began to show interest in the study of Scandinavian mythology, paganism gradually became a part of his life. At the age of 20, Christian officially changed his name to Varg, as the word "wolf" sounds in Norwegian.

The appearance of the singer himself was also impressive - with his height over 190 cm, it was easy to imagine a musician in Viking armor, easily repelling enemy attacks.

In his youth, Vikernes became a member of the neo-Nazi organization The Inner Black Circle of Norway, which included many Norwegian metal bands and Satanists. The members of this group set as their goal the complete destruction of Christianity in the country, although, according to the musician, all ideas were just words. Varg himself denied his involvement in devil worship, since the very concept of Satan arose only with the advent of Christianity.

In the early 90s, Varg became a guitarist in the Old Funeral group, but soon reorganized his own musical group Burzum. The artist again borrowed the name from the mythology of his favorite literary work. In the "language of Mordor," it meant the word "darkness."

The band's first songs piqued the interest of a musician named Euronymous, creator of the metal band Mayhem and owner of the Deathlike Silence Productions music label. Having signed a contract with an independent company, Varg began to appear on stage under the pseudonym Graf Grishnak. Already in 1992, the release of the debut album of the same name of the group took place. The second disc of the team "Det som engang var" appeared a year later.

The confinement in prison did not prevent the musician from continuing his work. Only now Varg was deprived of the opportunity to play music in a collective, so he acquired a synthesizer on which he recorded the parts of all the necessary instruments. So in the second half of the 90s, 3 more discs appeared.

The next disc was released only in 2010. It was a re-recording of the first two albums. Then, Varg released a disc every year, until 2014. Interestingly, after the singer was released from prison, Burzum never performed live.

In 2018, Vikernes announced the completion of the project on his personal YouTube channel. According to him, music has never been an end in itself, but only helped to emotionally experience every moment of life.

The turning point in the singer's biography was 1993. On August 11, a dispute broke out between Vikernes and Euronymous near the latter's house in Oslo. The situation is out of control. For reasons unknown to the end, Varg inflicted 23 stab wounds to his friend. Euronymous died of his wounds on the spot. The murder was witnessed by a colleague of the musicians, Snorre Rukh.

After the murder of a friend, the singer was arrested and brought to trial. According to Varg, he regards his crime as self-defense, since Euronymous tried to use a gun against him, which was in the house. According to another version, the cause of the young man's aggression could be a debt that his friend was not going to return.

During the investigation, a warehouse of explosives was found at the offender's house. To the punishment for the murder, the judge added a term for the burning of churches, in which Vikernes was involved. The musician was sentenced to 21 years in prison.

In conclusion, the singer did not limit himself in creativity. He wrote music, took up literary work. Since 2006, Vikernes has applied for early release several times. He could not edit the essay for 3 years, since the manuscript was confiscated from him. Later, a collection of articles was published in several languages, including Russian. In the book, Varg criticized Christianity, Satanism and the modern black metal movement. The writer suggested returning to pagan beliefs that would help preserve the purity of the nation. Despite the Nazi statements, Varg noted that he was positive about the Slavs.

The Norwegian himself has repeatedly become the hero of the books and films of his contemporaries. He was featured in the 2005 documentary project "The Metalman's Journey", the creators of which set out to explore the history of heavy metal. The directors used quotes from the musician and his interviews. Varg Vikernes also became the prototype of one of the heroes of Michael Moynihan's book "Lords of Chaos: The Bloody Rise of the Satanic Metal Underground".

Released, the singer presented his own work to the audience - the documentary Ancestors, which he had already created in France. It focused on the life of prehistoric ancestors, their way of life and beliefs. In 2011, having already finally moved to mainland Europe, Varg called on the French to support the ultra-right nationalist National Front party, led by Marine Le Pen.

The fans learned about the events of the musician's personal life only after his release from prison. While still in captivity, Varg met the Frenchwoman Marie Cachet, who became his wife. In 2007, the couple had their first child.
