The young man's debut in the continental hockey league took place in the fall of 2012. Valery played for the professional hockey club "Traktor" from his native Chelyabinsk. Nichushkin's first achievement in the KHL dates back to January 2013, when a young hockey player scored his first goal in a match against the Slovan club from Bratislava.

A month later, the young man received his first title: experts and fans on the Russian sports Internet portal recognized Valery as the best player of the month in the Continental League. Valery's utility coefficient as a striker during that period fluctuated at the level of +5 - +6 according to official statistics.

Thanks to the high performance on the ice arena, in May 2013, the Moscow club "Dynamo" offered Nichushkin a contract. So Valery moved from Chelyabinsk to Moscow, but in fact it turned out that the head coach of Dynamo Oleg Valerievich Znarok was in no hurry to bring the newcomer to the field.

Valery spent most of the time in the reserve, and Znarok even emphasized that the young man would hardly be able to get into the main team. After such statements, the hockey player broke his contract with the club and went to seek his fortune at the annual selection, which is held in the National Hockey League.

On June 30, 2013, Valery, in the city of Newark, liked the coach of the American club "Dallas Stars", and a week later the hockey player signed a contract, the term of which was 3 years. The first games in the new club were fruitless for the Russian athlete - not a single goal scored. The first puck, sent by Valery's stick, flew into the opponent's goal in November 2013 in a match against Canadian Ottawa.

The decision to leave Russia and go overseas was not easy for Valery. His compatriot Sergei Viktorovich Gonchar, who also began his professional career from the Chelyabinsk Tractors, and at that time was a defender of the Dallas Stars, helped Nichushkin to go through the adaptation period in the new club. 

Hockey club coach Lindy Ruff has supported Valery since the young player joined the club. When Nichushkin played the first season unsuccessfully, Raff invited the player to dinner and a frank conversation. After the very first season played back, Nichushkin entered the top three newcomers of the National Hockey League. For the recovery period, the athlete reduced the intensity of training, and, as a result, in the 2014-2015 season, Valery's play was not of the best quality. So the athlete from the Dallas Stars moved to the Texas Stars, although recently Raff spoke in an interview about Nichushkin's prospects as a forward. Given that the Texas Stars play in the American League, leaving the Dallas Stars, Valery also left the National Hockey League.

And in the fall of 2016, tired of waiting for the renegotiation of the contract with the Dallas Stars, Nichushkin returned to Russia, where he first joined Dynamo from Moscow, and then moved to CSKA.

In addition to working in Russian and foreign hockey clubs, Valery Nichushkin also performed at international competitions. In 2012 and 2013, the athlete played for Russia at the World Youth Championship. In 2013, Valery played for the youth team of Russia and in the match with Canada helped to snatch victory from overseas guests.
