Valery Dmitrievich Bolotov, the first leader of the self-proclaimed Luhansk republic, was born in February 1970. The place of his birth was the city of Taganrog. When the boy was 4 years old, the family moved to the city of Stakhanov, which is located near Luhansk.

From childhood, Valery went in for sports, and good studies at school allowed him to enter an economic university after serving in the army, and then study to become an engineer.

At the age of 18, the young man enters the airborne troops of the Vitebsk garrison. The division in which Bolotov served is sent to Georgia, and then to Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh. In the Caucasus, a young soldier finds himself in a military situation. During the hostilities, Valery is awarded the rank of senior sergeant, with whom he goes into the reserve. After returning to his homeland, Valery Dmitrievich opens his own business, which he is very successfully engaged in before a conflict situation in the state arises.

During a coup in 2014 in Ukraine on April 5 of the same year, Bolotov made a video announcement about the creation of detachments of resistance to the new order, and a day later paramilitary units of volunteers seized the SBU headquarters in Luhansk. Two weeks later, an open meeting took place, at which Valery Bolotov and his team called for the creation of an independent people's council in Luhansk. Bolotov was unanimously chosen as the acting head of the Luhansk region.

The first step was to organize the judicial system and law enforcement agencies of the new state formation. Following this appointment, the European Union, the United States and Canada added the military commander to the list of persona non grata.

In mid-May 2014, a sniper shot was fired at Valery Dmitrievich. The assassination attempt failed because the commander was wearing a protective vest. This did not prevent him from taking over the duties of the head of the LPR at the first meeting of the Republican Council a week later, after which Bolotov is put on the wanted list by the Security Service of Ukraine. But already in mid-August, Valery Bolotov withdraws his candidacy from the post of head of the Republic due to the consequences of injury and resigns.

After a while, Valery Dmitrievich leaves for Moscow with his family. In the Russian capital, he begins to deal with humanitarian supplies to his homeland. In addition, the former head of the LPR is establishing his own business and speaking at public meetings.

Two years later, Valery Bolotov, in his video speech, expressed his mistrust of Igor Plotnitsky, who took his place. In the last interview in his biography, Bolotov made it clear that he suspected him of betraying the ideals of the popular movement. Until the end of his life, Bolotov insisted on the unification of two independent republics, the DPR and LPR, under the flag of Novorossia.

The former head of the LPR hid information about his personal life for security reasons. There is not even a photo of his relatives on the Internet. It is only known that he had a family with two children. Valery Dmitrievich's wife's name is Elena.

At the end of January 2017, Valery Bolotov died suddenly in his home near Moscow. Doctors identified the cause of death as a heart attack.

According to his wife, Valery felt unwell after having a cup of coffee in the company of two business people whom he had met in a sports cafe the day before. During the conversation, Valery Dmitrievich left the room for several minutes. His interlocutors that evening were Alexey Karjakin and Valery Alexandrovich, LPR politicians. The funeral was postponed due to statements by Elena Bolotova about an attempt on her husband's life. She insisted on repeating the forensic examination.
