Vadim Bakatin managed to make a brilliant career in politics, headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the State Security Committee, was engaged in reforms in law enforcement agencies. But he went down in history for a long time as a traitor and a man who destroyed the KGB.

Childhood and youth

Vadim Viktorovich Bakatin was born on November 6, 1937 in Kuzbass, he is Russian by nationality. The boy spent his childhood in the village at a mine under construction, where his parents were sent. His father was a mining engineer, and his mother worked in medicine.

Vadim was diligent from childhood, studied well, graduated from school with a silver medal. He was fond of painting, a talent for which he inherited from his maternal grandfather, but he never became an artist. But for the rest of his life he retained his love for art and gave paintings to his faithful friends.

After leaving school, the young man decided to enter the Civil Engineering Institute in Novosibirsk, where he was trained at the military department. When the diploma was in his hands, Bakatin decided to return to Kuzbass to pursue a career in construction.

Personal life

The personal life of the politician was successful, in his youth he married his beloved Lyudmila, who gave birth to the man's sons Alexander and Dmitry.

Career and politics

Already in the first years of service, the guy showed himself to be a good worker with the makings of a confident leader. He quickly rose from foreman to chief engineer, gained prestige among the local authorities. No wonder he was soon recommended for party work.

In subsequent years, Vadim worked in the Kemerovo City Committee of the CPSU, was the second secretary, then the head of the construction department, and soon rose to the chief secretary. But the young man's party career did not end there, because he attracted the attention of Yegor Ligachev, who was engaged in the selection of personnel for work in the Central Committee of the CPSU.

So, in 1983, Bakatin arrived in Moscow, where he received the position of an instructor at the Central Committee of the party. In parallel, he studied at the Academy of Social Sciences, after which he became the first secretary of the Kirov regional committee. His appointment to the post coincided with the rise to power of Mikhail Gorbachev.

A year later, Vadim Viktorovich joined the Central Committee of the CPSU, became a deputy of the Supreme Soviet. This contributed to the career growth of the man, who, at the suggestion of Mikhail Gorbachev, headed the USSR Ministry of Internal Affairs. In this position, he investigated the incident with the fall of Boris Yeltsin from the bridge.

During his work as minister, Bakatin continued to create OMON, ordered the receipt of rubber truncheons for Soviet militiamen, introduced the practice of using paid informants, and ensured that the detainees in the pre-trial detention center were fed hot food.

Vadim Viktorovich was remembered by his contemporaries as a strict but fair leader. He was against the use of riot police and the Ministry of Internal Affairs to suppress popular unrest, which led to disagreements with Gorbachev. As a result, in 1990 the minister was forced to resign, but remained to work under the president of the USSR and was listed on his security council.

A year later, the politician put forward his candidacy for the presidential elections in the RSFSR, where he eventually took the last place. Journalist Leonid Mlechin believes that the reason was the unprofessional approach to preparation. Bakatin refused the help of specialists in creating an image, issuing campaign leaflets. He also did not deal with the study of campaign speeches.

During the August putsch, Vadim Viktorovich opposed the creation of the State Committee for the State of Emergency and took part in a trip to Foros for Mikhail Gorbachev. After the return of the President of the USSR to the country, Bakatin received the post of the new head of the State Security Committee. Later, Boris Yeltsin wrote in his memoirs that the goal of the politician was to get rid of the KGB as an organ of intimidation and suppression.

From that moment on, the former Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs began to restructure the Committee. As a result, a law was passed, according to which, instead of the KGB, organizations such as the Committee for the Protection of the Borders of the Soviet Union, the Inter-Republican Security Service and the Central Intelligence Service were created.

But Vadim Viktorovich did not have time to complete the reforms because of the scandal that happened in 1991 and put an end to his career. The man handed over to the Americans a scheme for installing eavesdropping devices in the Moscow US embassy.

When the hype began, Bakatin said that he did it with the permission of Yeltsin and Gorbachev to strengthen friendly relations between the countries. In addition, the installation of wiretapping at the American embassy has long been known in the United States. But the situation only fueled controversy, and the press wrote for a long time about Bakatin's betrayal and called him a traitor to his homeland.

After that, the man was fired from the security forces. For some time he was unemployed, despite Yeltsin's invitations to engage in public service. Then he worked in the "Reform" fund, was an advisor in several companies and soon retired.

Vadim Bakatin now

Currently, almost nothing is known about the former minister, in 2020 he does not appear in public, does not advertise photos on the Web, and prefers to lead a closed lifestyle. According to information from open sources, the politician now lives in Moscow.
