Tran Anh Hung was born in Vietnam in 1962. His childhood was marked by the war that ravaged his country. In 1975, when he was only 13 years old, the young Tran Anh left for France to escape the deleterious climate of Southeast Asia. Attracted by the cinema, he entered the Louis-Lumière School in 1987. He directed an end-of-studies short film in 1991, entitled The Stone of Waiting. Another short, The Married Woman, shot the following year follows. In 1993, Tran Anh Hung directed his first feature film, The Smell of Green Papaya. This dramatic comedy takes place in rural Vietnam in the 1950s. The sets were built in France and all the sequences, even those outdoors, were shot in the studios of Bry-sur-Marne. The film traces the journey of a little Vietnamese girl who, with the trials of life, learns to become a woman. The Odor of the Green Papaya was acclaimed by critics and won the Camera d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, as well as the César for Best First Fiction Work. His next film, Cyclo, whose action takes place in Ho Chi Minh City, hit screens three years later. The work, of great brutality both physical and psychological, is also rewarded, this time with the Golden Lion in Venice. Vertically Summer, shot in 2000, is the last work of his "Vietnamese trilogy" and once again receives rave reviews. He is screened in Cannes in the Un certain regard selection.

After eight years of absence, Je Viens Avec La Pluie (unpublished in France) marks its return behind the camera.
