Biography

Timothy Simon Smith, known to viewers as Tim Roth, is a British actor who has made a brilliant career in Hollywood. In his youth, nothing foreshadowed that the shy guy would soon become an artist of the first magnitude. Mike Lee and Peter Greenway will invite him to their projects, but the films of Quentin Tarantino will bring him real popularity. Today fans and critics call him the “great chameleon” of world cinema, and Tim Roth himself jokingly calls himself a “professional deceiver”.

Childhood and youth

A native of London, Tim Roth appeared in the family of a journalist and artist on May 14, 1961. In fact, the actor's name is Timothy Simon Smith. In the post-war years, the surname Smith, clearly indicating an English origin, Ernie, the boy's father, decided to change to the German-Jewish Roth.

Two reasons prompted him to take this step: firstly, solidarity with the victims of the Holocaust, and secondly, concern for the safety of his family, because the British were not welcomed in all the countries in which he had to visit on duty.

School years were not easy for Tim. Because of his surname and appearance, he repeatedly had conflicts with peers, and teachers did not hesitate to apply corporal punishment to students, which to this day are allowed in English schools. For their part, the parents, who by that time were divorced, tried with all their might to instill in their son a love of beauty. His mother taught Tim sculpture and painting, his father introduced him to music and theater.

Despite frequent visits to theaters and exhibitions, Roth was a marginalized teenager. Once, for bad behavior, he even had to spend the night at the police station. Nevertheless, the talent made itself felt - the young man was great at drawing, sculpting, and parodying adults.

Once, being a high school student who was complex because of his appearance and height, which by that time barely reached 170 cm, Tim Roth agreed to participate in a school play. He got the role of Dracula.

Fear seized the guy so much that he described himself on stage. Tim had to play out the role with wet pants, after which he firmly decided that acting was not his element. Roth then entered the sculpting department of the Camberwell School of Art. Having studied not so much, he became seriously interested in theater and decided to become an actor. His father advised him to attend classes at the theater studio at Oval House.

Movies

The debut for the creative biography of Tim Roth was the work in the film "Made in Britain" (1982), the actor managed to get the role in the film by Alan Clark by accident. In his youth, he moonlighted as an advertising agent for the Health and Safety publication. One day, during a bike tour of clients, Tim had to stop by friends from the Oval House theater to ask for a pump for a suddenly flat tire.

One of the TV people spotted a guy with a shaved head (Roth then played Cassio in Othello) and invited him to audition for the role of a skinhead. So Tim unexpectedly began the path of an actor. The hero performed by the artist turned out to be a bright, memorable character. Thanks to the fallen popularity, the timid young man began to feel more confident in society.

The first appearance of Tim Roth on the big screens took place in 1984 in the crime drama by Stephen Frears "Snitch", where the actor appeared in the guise of a mercenary killer. Then new roles followed, in which Tim managed to embody conflicting images. Among them - "Return to Waterloo" (1985), "Kill the Priest" (1988), "Cook, Thief, His Wife and Lover" (1989).

Impenetrable Hollywood remained Roth's dream. At home, his film career stopped, the royalties were not enough to support the family, and his friends - Gary Oldman and Daniel Day-Lewis - were already filming in full force in America, where they moved their families. In this difficult time, luck smiled at the artist again.

In 1990, such important films for the actor's career were released as "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead" and "Vincent and Theo" about the life of the great Dutch artist Vincent Van Gogh. The artist was happy to embody on the screen the image of his father's beloved painter. But Ernie did not have time to fully rejoice for his son: he died when Tim was on the next set. Thanks to these works, Roth became recognizable in the cinematic environment.

The Briton was noticed by Quentin Tarantino, who entrusted the actor with the role in Reservoir Dogs (1992). A new period began in the actor's career. Collaboration with Tarantino continued filming in "Pulp Fiction" (1994), the cult picture helped Tim Roth once again declare himself. In the same year, he starred as Philip Cheney in the love drama "Captives", paired with Julia Ormond.

The non-standard comedy Four Rooms (1995) also became a success for the actor, although it was not understood by everyone. After roles in Tarantino films, Roth became the face of alternative cinema.

The star managed to consolidate her position in Hollywood thanks to her role in the movie "Rob Roy" (1995). The British performer appeared in the guise of an illegitimate aristocrat who entered the service of a nobleman. Thanks to his stamina, fit figure (with an average height, his weight did not exceed 67 kg) and bright appearance, the young actor easily coped with the loads on the set.

For his performance in the film by Michael Keyton-Jones, he received an Academy Award and was also nominated for an Oscar. On-screen company Tim Roth was accompanied by Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange and John Hurt.

In 1996, Roth emerged as a comedic actor and a wonderful vocalist, playing in Woody Allen's musical film Everybody Says I Love You. In 1998, the film by Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore "The Legend of the Pianist" was released, which hit the top 250 best films of all time.

Tim played the role of the foundling Danny, who spent his entire life on the ship and eventually became a renowned self-taught pianist. After it was decided to send the ship to the bottom of the ocean, Danny refused to go to earth and died along with his house.

In Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes (2001), the actor played General Thade. For the sake of this film, he turned down the role of Severus Snape in the Harry Potter films. In addition, Roth had the opportunity to play instead of Anthony Hopkins in the sequel to the legendary thriller The Silence of the Lambs.

At the turn of the century, Tim Roth made his feature film director debut with the drama War Zone. Later he took on one more work - the adaptation of William Shakespeare's "King Lear", but did not finish the picture.

Among the bright works of the star in the second half of the 2000s - "Territory of the virgins", "Youth without youth" (2007), "The Incredible Hulk" (2008), "Pete Smals is dead" (2010) and others. In 2009, Tim Roth starred in the leading role in the drama series Lie to Me directed by Robert Schwentke, in which it was about the work of the FBI special department dealing with the identification of manifestations of lies. Service employees work not only with government agencies, but also with individuals.

In 2015, with the participation of the actor, another Western by Quentin Tarantino "The Hateful Eight" was released, as well as the drama by Michel Franco "The Chronicle" about the life of social worker David, who cares for terminally ill people. In the 2016 crime drama Rillington Place, the actor played the main character - the maniac John Christie, who traded in London during the Second World War.

In 2017, Tim Roth took part in the filming of the sequel to the Twin Peaks series by American directors Mark Frost and David Lynch. The broadcast of the new season of the mystical serial film began in late spring 2017 on Showtime, the premiere took place as part of the Cannes Film Festival program.

Along with the leading performers known from the first seasons, led by Kyle McLachlan (FBI agent Dale Cooper), new actors played in the film - Balthazar Getty, Laura Dern, Naomi Watts, James Belushi, Amanda Seyfried. To create the musical accompaniment, the composer of the first seasons of the series Angelo Badalamenti was again invited.

In the same year, the sports drama Life at These Speeds by American director Leif Tilden was released, in which it was about a young man who suddenly lost two close friends. To overcome the pain of loss, Kevin started long-distance running. Tim Roth played the hero of Jared in the film.

Another series of the year, in which Tim took part, is the crime drama "Steel Star", where the actor appeared as the head of the provincial town police department Jim Worth. He moved to this place with his family from London, hiding from the past. But here, too, the hero had to defend his right to life. The film was greeted with interest by the public, so it was extended for a second season.

Personal life

For the first time, Tim broke up with his bachelor life back in the early 80s. The actor's wife was Lori Baker, who gave birth to his son Jack in 1984. 3 years after the birth of the child, problems began in the family. As a result, Roth decided to move from England to the United States, leaving his wife and son, whom he later took to his place.

In 1993, the actor's personal life underwent a change: Tim remarried. This time his soul mate was Nikki Butler, who works as a designer. The artist met her in 1992 at the Sundance Film Festival. The girl was there by chance: she came to the mountains to rest.

The acquaintance took place in one of the restaurants: Butler showed interest in Roth, not knowing about his occupation, which finally struck the actor. The novel developed rapidly: a month later Nikki was already accompanying the groom on the set.

In his second marriage, Tim had two sons: in 1995 - Timothy Hunter, and a year later - Michael Cormack. The boys were named after the couple's favorite writers, Hunter Thompson and Cormac McCarthy. Interestingly, for the sake of his sons, Roth decided to shoot in the American blockbuster "The Incredible Hulk", where he reincarnated as Mr. Abomination, although earlier the actor basically tried not to participate in major franchises.

In honor of his wife Nikki and three children, the actor made tattoos on his right hand, which he later demonstrated in the photo, which he posted on his own page on Instagram.

Now the performer continues to actively act in films. Every year the artist's filmography is replenished with a number of new works. In 2018, he starred in the Comedy Reluctant Swindlers, in which he played with Uma Thurman. Also, the Briton appeared in the main cast of the Canadian crime film "Padre".

The most anticipated premiere of 2019 was the screening of another masterpiece by Quentin Tarantino "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood", where, in addition to Tim Roth, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie played. The events of the picture unfold against the background of high-profile crimes of the sect of Charles Manson in the 60s of the last century. At the center of the action is television actor Rick Dalton and his longtime understudy friend Cliff Booth.
