And, of course, the main role in the project was played by the young Michael Jackson, the future pop king.

Creation history and composition

The history of the creation of the group began by accident, due to children's leprosy. The father of the Jackson family, Joseph, played in the group The Falcons in his youth, but he did not manage to gain much fame.

Later, already being a family man, the man did not give up his interest in music, he studied singing with his sons. My father had a guitar, and when he left for work, the brothers secretly took the instrument from the closet and learned to select the melodies that were popular at that time.

When the deception was revealed, Joseph was quite displeased. However, hearing the boys singing songs changed his mind. The singing of the teenagers was so professional that the father understood: it was time to do business on this. A new musical team was born in 1964. The "family" collective, which was named The Jackson Brothers, included three older brothers, Tito, Jermaine and Jackie Jackson.

In addition, the band included two guest amateur musicians, guitarist Reynold Jones and Milford Hight. A year later, it was decided to add the younger children of Marlon and Michael to the project. Joseph himself supervised the rehearsal process, working out not only the sound, but also the dance part, as well as thinking over the details of the stage images. He also became the project manager.

Later, in 1966, when the family quintet gained popularity, the band's mentor Shirley Cartman proposed renaming it The Jackson 5. She also suggested replacing Jones and Hight with two professional musicians, drummer Johnny Jackson and keyboardist Ronnie Ransifer. Tito took the place of the main guitarist, and Jermaine, who had previously played rhythm guitar, changed the instrument to bass.

In the late 70s, the composition of the team underwent changes. By this time, the group had terminated the contract with the record company "Motown", with which they collaborated for several years. As a result of the conflict, the musicians were forced to change their name to The Jacksons: the rights to the trademark belonged to the studio.

In addition, Jermaine temporarily left the team, the reason for leaving was marriage. A place in the project was taken by Randy Jackson, the youngest of the brothers. Michael also left the team and took up a solo project. The brothers' albums gradually lost popularity, and by the end of the 80s, the band stopped concert activity. However, there were no official statements about the band's breakup.

Music

The musical concept of The Jackson 5 was influenced by popular Western artists of the 1960s. Young singers performed both famous hits and songs created especially for their project.

These tracks organically mixed elements of rhythm and blues, soul, disco and other directions. The Jacksons themselves later admitted that music was always played in their house. Joseph and his brother played the guitar melodies of Chuck Berry, Little Richard - children from a young age absorbed the groovy rhythms of rock and roll.

In 1966, the new group won a talent competition at a local school where one of the brothers studied. This event was the starting point in the growth of the team's popularity. Subsequent prizes, taken by the sons, convinced the father of the family to invest more money in the project.

New techniques and instruments appeared in the collective, which had a beneficial effect on the sound. Touring activities in the United States began. At first, the Jacksons did not appear in concert halls, but in small clubs called in slang "pig's scars". Such establishments were safe for black performers, while segregation still existed in America.

Young artists alternated performances with numbers of comedians, strippers and other entertainers. The first song that immediately received public recognition was Big Boy. It was followed by several equally successful singles. In 1967 the band won the Amateur Night competition, after which representatives of the Motown Records label became interested in it.

In July of the following year, an audition took place, after which a contract was signed with the project. The first song I Want You Back, recorded in the studio in a matter of days, became a hit. The main vocal part was performed by young Michael Jackson, who managed to make the composition especially expressive.

Soon the discography of The Jackson 5 was replenished with such singles as ABC, The Love You Save and the soulful ballad I'll Be There. These tracks hit the American charts, and later in the world. Thanks to a well-thought-out concept, the group's image became recognizable. The audience especially loved the dances with which the brothers accompanied the performances.

In order to increase the attractiveness of the young vocalist in the eyes of the audience, the producers changed Michael's age in advertising messages about the group. At that time, the singer was already 11, but the number of years was reduced to 8. In addition, invited professional musicians Jackson and Ransifer were named cousins of the team.

Such a PR move made it possible to create the appearance of a large friendly family. In addition, the popular star of the American stage, Diana Ross, was involved in the process of promoting the band on the music market. The singer presented a new project to the public. In 1971, Motown began working with Michael in parallel, helping him to record solo compositions.

Since the mid-70s, the group's commercial success began to gradually decline, despite the fact that new records entered the music tops. This happened because Motown did not want to change the band's image, did not allow the performers to grow and try themselves in new trends. Joseph decided to find another label for The Jackson 5.

In 1975, negotiations were underway with the CBS Records, which offered more favorable terms of cooperation. Under the contract, the brothers could perform their own songs and play instruments, which were prohibited in the former studio. Motown then began a lawsuit seeking compensation for breach of contract.

As a result of the proceedings, the project changed its name to The Jacksons. The changes had a beneficial effect on the quintet: the band released several albums. Among them, Triumph became a landmark, and the best song on the disc was Can You Feel It.

In 1984 Michael left the "family", and soon Marlon also went into solo work. In the late 80s Jackie, Tito, Jermaine and Randy remained in the group. In 1989, the band's last disc was released, which turned into a quartet. In 2001, after a long silence, the brothers reunited at a performance dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the solo career of the king of pop. After Michael's death, they gathered at events dedicated to the memory of the singer.
