Biography
Born in 1960 in Copenhagen, Susanne Bier studied applied arts at the Bezalet Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, then architecture in London, before entering the National School of Cinema in Denmark. In 1987, his graduation film De saliges won the First Prize at the Munich School Film Festival and Channel 4 acquired the broadcasting rights.
While directing music videos and commercials, Susanne Bier continued her film career and signed her first feature film in 1991, Freud left the house, in which Peter Stormare appeared. She alternates genres from family comedy (Family Affairs in 1993) to thriller (Sekten in 1997).
His career took a turn in 1999 with the romantic comedy The One and Only. Public and critical success, the feature film won 3 Bodil and 6 Robert, major Danish cinema awards, and totaled one million admissions in Denmark, being among the five most viewed films in the country. Having become a sure bet, the following year Susanne Bier set about making Once in a Lifetime (2000) then Open hearts (2002), made according to the rules of Dogma95. Success is again at the rendezvous: the film won no less than twelve prizes and was selected at the Toronto and San Sebastian festivals.
She continued her rise in 2004 with Brothers which allowed her to stand out across the Atlantic and which was the subject of a remake with Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal. After Open hearts, she again directs Mads Mikkelsen in After the wedding, nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film in 2006. Subsequently, she made a foray into American cinema with Our Burnt Memories, produced by Sam Mendes, where she directs Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro before returning in 2011 to her native country with Revenge. This story of friendship shattered by an act of revenge allows him to collect his first Oscar, that of the best foreign film.
The following year, she directed Pierce Brosnan in Love is all you need, a co-production which won the European Film Award for best comedy. The director then shoots a thriller (A Second Chance) produced in Denmark. She turns once again to the United States to play the now staple duo Bradley Cooper - Jennifer Lawrence in Serena, a drama that takes root during the Great Depression in North Carolina.
