Biography

Stéphane Brizé began his studies by completing a DUT in electronics allowing him very early on to experience the world of television and cinema by becoming an audiovisual technician. Installed in Paris, he took the opportunity to enroll in drama courts which would fascinate him until he specialized in the acting profession and directed several plays.

Determined and reckless, he chose in 1993 to move on to directing with the short film Bleu Damage which won the Grand Prix of the Cognac Festival. In 1996, he continued this momentum by directing L'Oeil qui traine, winner of the Grand Prize at the Festival de Vendôme, Rennes, Mamers and Alès, as well as the Prize for male interpretation at the Festival de Saint-Denis.

With all these awards, he moved on to the video clip (for singer Peter Kröner) before coming to the feature film. With the help of her friend Florence Vignon, they wrote together Le Bleu des Villes in 1999 which was presented at the Directors' Fortnight and won the Michel d'Ornano prize for best screenplay. The film is a hit in theaters.

After an unprecedented documentary, the Center Val de Loire region offers him a daring new project: to write and then shoot a film in ten days with the help of professional actors who have no cinematographic experience. The result will be the film Between Adults, produced by Claude Lelouch. However, we will have to wait for the success of his third feature film to see this second project in theaters. Because with I am not there to be loved, released in 2005, the director once again manages to reach the public by evoking the life of a man without feelings or expressions (played by Patrick Chesnais) opening himself little by little to the world thanks to tango lessons. The film was presented at the San Sebastian festival and received several nominations for the 2006 Cesars.

Also passing in front of the camera while filming for Thomas Vincent in The New Protocol, we find him in theaters in 2009 with a sentimental drama, Mademoiselle Chambon, taken from a work by Eric Holder and co-written again with Florence Vignon for whom he is awarded the César for Best Adaptation in 2010 with her colleague Florence Vignon. Three years later, he returned with Few Hours of Spring, a feature film worn again by Vincent Lindon, and Hélène Vincent. The film won four César awards in 2013 (Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay).

The director then re-teamed with Vincent Lindon for The Law of the Market, a realistic social film in which the actor plays a father who begins a new job as a security guard in a supermarket after a long period of unemployment. . Lindon's performance is rewarded, among others, at Cannes and at the César. Quickly, Stéphane Brizé delivers his new film, Une vie, which is adapted from Guy de Maupassant's first novel and includes Judith Chemla, Jean-Pierre Darroussin, Yolande Moreau and Swann Arlaud in the main roles.
