Sofya Alexandrovna Velikaya was born in Almaty (now Almaty) in June 1985. The girl's parents - Natalya Alexandrovna and Alexander Evgenievich - preferred active rest, and they were always with them with their older brother Grisha. The "weapon" of the Great was the rapier. The first coach of the athlete was Vladimir Diakokin, who "put his hand" (by the way, the right one) to the young foil fencer.

One day a brother who studied at the famous Chertanov school with Alexander Filatov came from Moscow and told Sonya that she could become one of the pioneers of saber fencing. At that time, this sports discipline was only “in vogue” and had not yet acquired an official status.

Sofia has two higher educations - the Russian State University of Physical Culture, Sports, Youth and Tourism, and after the birth of a baby she graduated from Moscow State University with a degree in sports management.

Sophia took a chance and went with her brother to the capital. She got to the famous coach Dmitry Glotov. Under his leadership, the Great changed the rapier to a saber and very quickly mastered a new type of fencing.

The first Olympiad, in which the best Russian saber fencer participated, was held in China in 2008. Sonya managed to climb only the fourth step. But the 2012 London Olympics brought a much better result - silver. The Russian woman was overtaken by the Korean Kim Ji Young. For the Great, aiming at the main award, the second place turned out to be an annoying loss, because quite a bit was not enough to complete victory.

After a forced pause, which Sophia Velikaya made due to the birth of a child, the fencer returned to the national team. She managed to recover pretty quickly. Already in 2014, she won gold in the team competition at the European Championship. In 2015, the series of successful performances for the Great continued: Sophia brilliantly won individual and team competitions. And this happened both at the European Championships and at the World Championships.

Ahead, the athlete was waiting for the main victory - the gold of the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. It was won by Sophia the Great in the team championship. With her team, the fencer managed to defeat Mexican, American and Ukrainian rivals.

The great began her personal tournament path in Rio de Janeiro with an easy victory, but in the second fight with the Frenchwoman Charlotte Lembach, she presented her fans with a lot of gray hair. However, the decisive blow came from the Russian epee fencer. The next fight was again with a Frenchwoman, this time with Cecile Burder, whom she also won with ease. The coaches of the French national team literally clutched at their heads, since their ward Manon Brunet was supposed to become the third rival of the Great. In the semifinals, Sophia was one blow away from defeat, but was able to recoup and guarantee herself a medal.

However, it so happened that in the final she met with her friend and compatriot Yana Yegoryan and lost. For the second time in the individual championship, she again becomes the second. In an interview, the athlete admitted that due to the fact that it was Yana who won her, the bitterness from resentment was not so strong.

After Rio de Janeiro, Sophia took a break, but she was not going to end her career.

On November 17, 2016 Velikaya was elected the head of the Athletes' Commission of the Russian Olympic Committee. The girl does a lot for Russian sports. After the doping scandal, she repeatedly sent petitions to the IOC to reconsider their decision to disqualify some athletes for life.
