fact
Childhood and adolescence
Simon Maxwell Helberg was born on December 9, 1980, in Los Angeles. He is the son of the actor, founder of the improvisation troupe The Groundlings Sandy Helberg, known for the films "Fear of Heights", "World History: Part 1", "Space Eggs", and director of casting and screenwriter Harriet Helberg (nee Birnbaum). Parents, Jews by nationality, brought up their son according to the Jewish canons.
As a child, the boy was fond of music, mastered playing the piano, engaged in martial arts. After watching the 1984 film "The Karate Kid," Simon decided to become the same as the hero of the film, and succeeded. From the age of 5 he began to train, and at the age of 10 he received a black belt.
Helberg enrolled at Crossroads, a high school in Santa Monica, California. There he became interested in theatre, at the age of 15-16 he played in school plays. Most of all, the young man liked to perform comic roles. The stage art teacher noticed Simon's talent and began to develop his acting skills in different roles.
After leaving school, Helberg decided that he wanted to be an artist. He enrolled at New York University's Tish School of Art, where he earned a bachelor's degree. Among the graduates of his course are many young actors who have achieved success in film and television: Felicity Huffman, Jessica Alba, Jason Ritter and others. During his studies, the young man continued to study music. He performed in youth ensembles, created several of his own projects.

Movies
Filming for Helberg began in 1999 with a cameo as a dorm roommate in Lawrence Kazdan's comedy "Dr. Mumford." At the same time, the actor made his television debut in the TV series "Best", "Sabrina - a Little Witch", "SOSists of Malibu" etc.
At the beginning of his career, in 2002, Simon participated in the popular American sketch show MadTV on Fox. The genre of improvisation was close to the actor from childhood, since he began to attend performances of his father's troupe. But working in a humorous project on commercial television assumed limitations, did not allow self-expression. The young comedian lasted in The Project 1 season.
In the same year, the youth comedy "The King of Parties" was released, where Simon played the role of a nerd student. Then the audience saw him in the films "Klava, come on!", "Old temper," "Cinderella story," "Good night and good luck."
Helberg continued filming on television in the TV series "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip", ironically describing the behind-the-scenes life of popular shows like MadTV. Simon's character - Alex Driver, famous for a parody of Nicolas Cage, was close to the actor in character and way of thinking. In 2006, Helberg appeared in a series of humorous commercials for the British financial company Virgin Money.
In the early 2000s, Simon co-created the comedy duo Derek Waters with comedian Derek Waters. The actors directed two short films, "Derek and Simon: A Bee and a Cigarette" and "Derek and Simon: The Pity Card", which were presented at the South by Southwest Film Festival and Sundance Film Festival. They were then combined into a half-hour picture on HBO.
In 2007, with the participation of Bob Odenkirk, the duo created the web series "Derek and Simon : The Show" for the comedy site Super Deluxe. It was a show about the lives of friends, Simon and Derek, wandering around Los Angeles in order to understand the problems of lovers, to penetrate the secret of relationships between people. Most of the time the characters spent in bars, chasing women, got into ridiculous, funny situations.
The turning point in the actor's biography came in 2007, when he learned about the casting for a new comedy series conceived by Chuck Lorry and Bill Predy. Helberg's agent immediately saw him as an ironic botanist engineer and recorded an audition. The role of Howard Wolowitz easily went to a young comedian.
"The Big Bang Theory" changed Helberg's life. His character, a graduate of the University of Massachusetts, the only one in the company did not have a degree, so friends - PhDs - constantly made fun of him. But Howard - the owner of the brightest and eccentric appearance, first found love, miniature girl Bernadette Rostenkowski, played by Melissa Rausch. The actors were perfect for each other: Helberg's height is 163 cm, 70 kg, his partner - 152 cm, 57 kg.
From season to season, Simon's hero evolved, but never ceased to be funny: hapless loelas in parrot outfits, a guy tied to the skirt of an imperious "mother", then an astronaut, husband and father.
Helberg, along with Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons, Kaley Cuoco and Kunal Nayar, became the centerpiece of the series, gained audience love and worldwide fame, was awarded the Television Critics' Choice Award for Best Actor in a Comedy Genre.
For each episode of the show Simon received a fee of $100 million, though in the 10th, 11th and 12th seasons the main performers had to share the profits with Melissa Rausch and Mayim Bialik, whose salaries were 5 times less. In 2016, Helberg ranked 4th on Forbes' list among the highest-paid television stars, with revenue of $22 billion. The project was filmed for 11 years. In 2018, the last series of the show were released, the 13th season it was not extended.
In parallel with the filming of The Big Bang Theory, Helberg worked on other projects. In 2008, the comedian took part in the filming of the short film "Doctor of Horror Music Blog". In this fantastic musical, Helberg played the role of a wet, funny friend and improvised main character, constantly exuding moisture.
The following year, the actor starred in the Coen brothers' black comedy "Serious Man" as a young rabbi. The film was among the 2010 Academy Award nominees. In 2013, Simon's wife, Jozelyn Town, presented the Indian drama I Am I, in which the actor acted as a producer and performer of one of the main roles.
In 2014, Helberg tried his hand at directing. The debut work was the melodramatic comedy "Don't see us Paris like your ears", where the actor played the main role. This film was the 2nd collaboration of the star of "The Big Bang Theory" and his wife.
In 2016, Helberg was invited to star in the film "Primadonna" (Florence Foster Jenkins) about the life and work of The American opera singer and pianist Florence Foster Jenkins, famous for performing on stage with a complete lack of hearing, voice and sense of rhythm. Simon played the role of Cosma McMoon, the diva's accompanist, and received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a 2nd Plan.
