Serzh Sargsyan

Serzh Sargsyan is an Armenian political, military and statesman, the third President of the Republic of Armenia from 2008 to 2018. The Prime Minister of the country from 2007 to 2008, who took over the post of Chairman of the Council of Ministers for the second time on April 17, 2018 and resigned due to the outbreak of mass protests after 6 days, on April 23, 2018.

The future politician was born in Stepanakert in the summer of 1954. The head of the family, Azat Sargsyan, comes from the village of Tekh in eastern Armenia. Sargsyan Sr. in 1937 fell into the millstones of the Stalinist repressive machine. After the dramatic events with the arrest of Azat, the family changed their place of residence and moved to Stepanakert.

Serzh Sargsyan, after receiving the certificate of maturity from the Stepanakert secondary school, became a student at Yerevan University, choosing the Faculty of Humanities. Received a diploma of higher education in 1979. Studies at the university were interrupted for 2 years by service in the ranks of the Armed Forces of the Soviet Union.

Serzh Sargsyan's political biography began after graduating from the university. In 1979, the young activist and Komsomol member was elected head of the department of the Komsomol city committee in Stepanakert. Serzh Sargsyan's career developed rapidly. After the Komsomol work, he headed the propaganda and agitation department of the Azerbaijani city committee of the Communist Party, and a year later he was assigned the duties of assistant to the last head of the Nagorno-Karabakh regional committee of the CPSU, Henrikh Poghosyan, in the country's history.

In 1988, Serzh Sargsyan joined the "Karabakh movement" for 10 years, becoming one of its leaders. The public movement proclaimed the goal of annexing Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia. In 1989, the young politician joined the ranks of the Armenian National Movement and, as a leading member of the party, became a delegate from the autonomy.

In 1990, Sargsyan was elected a deputy of the republican Supreme Soviet. In 1992-1993 Serzh Sargsyan served as the Minister of Defense of the Karabakh Republic. In 1993, President Levon Ter-Petrosyan put Sargsyan in charge of the Defense Ministry. Serge Azatovich worked in this position for 2 years.

In 1995-96, the politician headed the National Security Committee of Armenia, and in November 1996, after the committee was merged with the Ministry of Internal Affairs, he headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs and held a ministerial post until the summer of 1999.

After Ter-Petrosyan resigned, Sargsyan, whom the country's political forces had predicted to be the head of state, refused the offer, expressing support for Robert Kocharian.

In November 1999, Serzh Sargsyan headed the presidential administration, and at the end of the year became the secretary of the National Security Service of Armenia. He remained in this position in May 2000, when Andranik Margaryan headed the government. He additionally entrusted Sargsyan with the duties of the Minister of Defense.

In the elections of deputies to the National Assembly in 2003, Sargsyan took over the list of the party in power. As a result of the elections, the RPA won 33 seats in the Armenian parliament. On April 23, Serzh Sargsyan, wishing peace to Armenia, submitted an application and resigned.
