Serj Tankian

Serj Tankian is an American musician of Armenian descent, vocalist of the System of a Down band and the founder of the solo project Serj Tankian.

The future musician and vocalist was born in August 1967 in the capital of Lebanon - Beirut. Serge's parents - Alice and Hatchador - are Armenians by nationality, but the birthplace of his father was Syrian Aleppo. Hatchador is a musician who owns Serjical Strike Records.

Serge is the firstborn of the Tankians. When the family decided to move to Los Angeles, in addition to 8-year-old Serge, their youngest son Sevak was growing up.

In the cradle of the Hollywood “dream factory” and pop music, Serge Tankian attended the bilingual Armenian school Rose & Alex Philibosi, where he studied the basics of marketing and became interested in music. Soon the young Tankian mastered the guitar and began to sing.

The future vocalist grew up on music of different directions and genres: rock, punk, hip-hop, extreme death metal. The guy's tastes were influenced by the national music of Armenia, Greece, France, England, Arab motives. In the mid-1980s, Serge Tankian graduated from high school and continued to study marketing. After 4 years, he became a Bachelor of Business Administration.

The musician's creative biography began quite late: at the age of 20, Tankian turned to music as his main occupation. He came to this decision after trying his hand at trading and programming. I thought about legal education, but stopped in time, realizing what he was most attracted to.

In the early 1990s, Serzh Tankian, joining the Armenian community in Los Angeles, met guitarist and vocalist Daron Malakyan. In 1994, young people organized the first musical group, calling it Soil. After several changes in the composition of the band, Tankian, Malakyan and the compatriots who joined it remained in it: bassist Shavo Odadzhyan and drummer John Dolmayan. In 1995, the group was renamed System of a Down (SOAD).

The first solo project - the debut album Elect The Dead - Tankian presented in October 2007. It includes old and new SOAD compositions. Serge Tankian went on a tour with the band. The first concert in support of the album took place in Chicago. Elect The Dead includes popular songs Sky Is Over and Lie Lie Lie, performed in the genres of progressive metal and rock. Soon clips were shot for hits.

In 2008, the vocalist took part in the recording of the Praxis album, which was released under the name Profanation. And in the fall of 2009, Serge Tankian, in a duet with his father, reminded of themselves in their historical homeland: they performed the composition of Alexei Hekimyan. The song in Armenian was performed live on TV in Armenia.

The beginning of 2010 was marked by a surprise that the singer made to his fans: he recorded the first composition accompanied by a symphony orchestra. The song Empty Walls is the flagship of the live album Elect the Dead Symphony, recorded to symphonic music.

In September 2010, a new album, Imperfect Harmonies, was released, and the following year, Serge Tankian presented an album composed of remixes of Imperfect Harmonies songs.

In early 2011, SOAD and her vocalist delighted music lovers and fans with a musical about Prometheus. In August, before the concert in Yerevan, Serge Tankian was awarded a medal for the promotion of Armenian music and contribution to the world recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

In the summer of 2012, Serj Tankian presented the Harakiri rock album to music lovers, and in early 2013 announced a collaboration with hip-hop vocalist Tech N9ne. In the same year, the rapper's album Something Else was released, which included a song with Tankian, Straight Out The Gate.

The song Shooting Helicopters is the fruit of joint creativity of Serge Tankian and composer and DJ from Italy Benny Benassi. The composition was included in Benassi's album Danceaholic, an electronic dance music album, released in 2016.

In 2017, Tankian with Ekaterina Ivanchikova, the soloist of the IOWA collective, starred in the video for the song "A Beautiful Day to Die", which became the musical accompaniment to the movie "The Legend of Kolovrat".

Serzh Tankian is not indifferent to the fate of Armenia and has repeatedly voiced his position regarding the massacres of compatriots in the Ottoman Empire. On the Day of Commemoration of the Victims of the Genocide, the soloist of System of a Down and his associates appealed to US President Barack Obama with an appeal to officially recognize the Armenian Genocide in the first quarter of the 20th century.

As part of the campaign, Serzh Tankian wrote an article in which he spoke about the tragedy of the people in the context of the dramatic fate of his grandparents, who were brutally killed in those years.

The artist's wife is an Armenian Angela Madatyan. The romance lasted 8 years, starting in 2004. Angela was born in the third largest city in Armenia - Vanadzor.

Tankian and Madatyan got married in the summer of 2012. The wedding took place in a symbolic place for the future spouses - the city of Echmiadzin. It is one of the most significant cultural and religious centers of Armenia, its spiritual center since the beginning of the 4th century.

In October 2014, the 16-year-old youngest Angela gave birth to her 47-year-old wife's first child, who was named Rumi. Serge Tankian, who rarely reveals to strangers the pages of his personal life, joyfully published a photo of the baby on his Instagram page.

The rock musician did not remain indifferent to the political events that took place in Armenia in the spring of 2018. Serge Tankian congratulated Nikol Pashinyan on the victory and wished success to the new government.

Earlier, Serge Tankian visited Yerevan and supported the opposition rally, calling it a "beautiful revolution". On Instagram, he warned fans that he would not give a concert, and sang only one song in Armenian - the song “White Stork”.

Talking about the events in the country, Tankian admitted to reporters that he did not sleep at night and watched what was happening online. He is confident that the people are ripe for a decisive step forward and believes in Pashinyan.

Nikol Pashinyan, having assumed the rights of prime minister, received a famous rock musician of Armenian origin and thanked for his support. The politician and singer discussed the events in the country and its future. Tankian wished success and effective work to the new government, and Pashinyan admitted that on the way from the airport he persuaded Serge to return to his historical homeland.
