Biography

Sergei Voronov is a Russian single skater known for his unpredictable competition results. Despite his serious age for an athlete, Sergey continues to go out on the ice and is not going to leave his career in the near future.

2

fact

Childhood and youth

Sergey Voronov was born in Moscow on October 3, 1987. In 1991, when the boy was 4 years old, his mother brought him to the figure skating section. In an interview, the skater admitted: no one suspected that ice would become his profession. Mom's friend gave her daughter to the same section, and little Seryozha just kept company in order not to let the girl get bored and at the same time improve her health.

Sergei liked the training - he was struck by the speed and the very sensation of ice. Already at the age of 10, the boy was allowed to go to trainings in Sokolniki alone, and, according to Sergei, this was also part of what formed his character.

fact

Figure skating

Rafael Harutyunyan became Voronov's first coach, but in 2002 he had to part with him. Rafael Vladimirovich left for the USA, and it was not possible to let 13-year-old Seryozha go there alone - his mother and grandmother could not provide for his life in America. In addition, the teenager could not live alone, and Vera Anatolyevna, the coach's wife, who promised to help with everyday life, could not go.

Therefore, Sergei went to St. Petersburg and changed his mentor. First, he trained under the supervision of Galina Kashina, then Alexey Urmanov became his coach. Under his mentorship, Voronov won the first medal in 2005 - he took silver at the junior championship in Russia. The world championship among juniors that time was not given to him - Seryozha withdrew from him due to an injury.

This championship was submitted to Voronov only in the next season: then the young figure skater received silver medals both on him and at the Russian championship.

The 2006/2007 season brought mixed results. Having started performing in adult competitions, Sergey got 6th place at the Russian Championship and did not get to Europe. At the 2007 Universiade, the performance was more successful - the skater took 5th place. After that, at the Russian junior championship, the young man took gold, at the world - bronze. At the same time, at the "adult" championship of this year, the athlete reached only 19th place.

The next season imposed restrictions on Sergei - due to injuries, he could not perform cog jumps (these include lutz, flip and toe loop). This, however, did not prevent the skater from taking a medal of the Grand Prix stage, a gold medal at the national championship and relatively successfully skating the world and European championships - he took 7th place in the first, and 4th in the second.

But the 2008/2009 season was frankly unsuccessful. At Skate Canada, the athlete was in 6th place, in Cup of Russia - in 7th. Sergei changed the short program and again took gold at the Russian Championship, but in Europe he became sixth in the short program, and took only 13th place in the free program.

The results did not pass by critics - Voronov was accused of laziness and inattention during training. The subsequent season also passed without victories - Sergei did not rise above 7th place.

Sergei skated the next season with varying success. He won a silver medal at the Finlandia Trophy, took 6th place at the Paris Grand Prix, and again took silver in China, as at the Russian Championship. However, already at the European Championship he could not cope with the short program and ended up in seventeenth. Nevertheless, the Russian Figure Skating Federation still included Voronov in the Olympic team, albeit as a substitute.

At the 2010 World Cup in Turin, Sergei entered the main squad due to the removal of Evgeni Plushenko from the championship. However, after an unsuccessful performance, he decided to change his coach and, upon returning to Russia, went to Nikolai Morozov. The athlete collaborated with him until 2013, after which he moved to Eteri Tutberidze, under whose leadership he took the first silver at the European Championship. The skater was not selected for the Olympics again.

The 2014/2015 season started well. Having started from 4th place in the championship in Germany and having won silver medals at the Russian and Japanese stages of the Grand Prix, Sergey reached the final of the competition and finished them in 3rd place. Voronov also received bronze at the 2015 World Cup due to jumping errors.

In Shanghai, the athlete won 4th place in the short program, but during the free program, an old injury reminded of himself, so the skater became only seventeenth in it. But already at the World Team Championship, Sergei received a silver medal. In 2015-2016, the performances were generally good, but Voronov did not rise above the 3rd place in the championship in Finland. As a result, the skater did not qualify for the Russian national team, left Eteri Tutberidze and began training with Irina Goncharenko.

The next season began with the gold won by Sergei in Slovakia at the second stage of the Grand Prix held in Beijing, took 3rd place and after that he officially announced that this time he would not go to the Olympics, but would skate for himself and the audience. At the national championship, the skater showed the worst result in his career, but already in the final of the Russian Cup he won a bronze medal.

The 2017/2018 season began again with a victory in Bratislava - at the Ondrej Nepela Memorial, Sergei received silver, then in Minsk, in the Challenger series, gold. The next victory took place at the Japanese Grand Prix stage, and at the American stage, the skater took 3rd place. At the end of the season, in which there were several failures, Voronov was promoted to the Russian national team, but only as a substitute.

Personal life

Little is known about Sergei's personal life - the athlete practically does not touch on this topic in an interview. It is known that the skater is very attached to his mother Natalia Valentinovna and grandmother and always speaks warmly of them, emphasizing the importance of their role in his sports biography. Eteri Tutberidze, talking about working with Sergei, mentioned that, despite the athlete's age, he still came to training with his mother.

It is known that the skater met a girl named Diana and even got a tattoo on her forearm in her honor - the inscription “Lady Di”.

Based on data from open sources, we can conclude that it was she who advised, after the "Nebelhorn Trophy", to enter the musical excerpt "It's a Men's World" into the program. In addition, in an interview, Sergei noted that it was his girlfriend who invented the costume design for the 2012 World Cup in Nice.

There is no exact information about whether Voronin continues to meet with Diana now in open sources. It is known that the skater does not have a wife and children.

The athlete's personal hobbies are literature and cinema. In addition, Sergei notes that he is interested in classical ballet, as well as fashion - the skater believes that clothes can convey a person's mood and how he looks at the world around him.

From social networks, Voronov maintains an account on Instagram, but access for third-party users there is closed - to see Sergei's photo, a confirmed subscription is required.

fact

Sergey Voronin now

Sergey did not qualify for the Olympics in the 2018/2019 season, however, to the surprise of many, he did not leave the sport. Due to the fact that Goncharenko left CSKA, and the skater wanted to stay in the team, he changed his coach again. Elena Buyanova became Sergei's new mentor. According to the athlete, working with a new mentor is to his liking and he gets great pleasure from the process.

In May 2018, the skater worked with Denis Ten - the athlete helped Sergei with choreography. It was Denis who proposed the song "Way Down We Go" to Voronov, although initially the athlete did not agree.

Now, after the tragic death of Denis, the program has become especially important for Sergey, he thanks fate for the opportunity to work with a Kazakh athlete.

Now Sergei is studying at the Institute of Physical Education. Lesgaft in St. Petersburg. The athlete maintains the shape necessary for ice: his height is 176 cm, and his weight is 68 kg. He continues his sports career and is not going to part with the ice yet, participating in the stages of the Grand Prix and other figure skating competitions.
