The racer started to score points with Italian Formula Abarth, where he finished second in the individual competition. Then Sirotkin moved to the Italian Formula 3, and after its closure - to the Auto GP world series, in which the vice-world champion Felipe Massa and the son of the four-time champion Alain Prost - Nicolas rode.

The 16-year-old set a personal best with 5 training sessions, 3 qualifying runs and 5 races in 3 days, gaining a total of 817 km. For comparison, world champion Lewis Hamilton in 2017 during the final in the United Arab Emirates hit 850 km. The next stage was the prestigious European Formula V8 3.5, from which the new Formula 1 traditionally grows.

In 2013, Sergei signed a contract with the Swiss "Sauber" and became the youngest participant in the "Grand Prix" - the rider was not yet 18 years old. In addition, the Russian is one of the tallest Formula pilots with a height of 184 cm and a weight of 70 kg, and, as the newspaper Sovetsky Sport noted, “Sauber's mechanics had to tinker with the settings of the car”.

Sirotkin signed a contract with Sauber as a combat pilot, but in the end he participated only in test and training races. In 2015, the rider moved to the GP2 class, to one of the weakest teams - the Brazilian-Italian Rapax and managed to take 3rd place in the championship. A year later he repeated his success in the French ART Grand Prix.

In the summer of 2017, the Russian pilot made his debut in the oldest endurance race "24 Hours of Le Mans" as part of SMP Racing. Sergey finished in the fourth ten due to frequent repairs of his sports prototype Dallara.

Soon Sergey returned to Formula 1 as a test driver for Renault, took part in free races at the Grand Prix of Russia, Spain and Brazil, tried the tracks of Austria and Malaysia.
