"Home", "warm", "real man". Such epithets were awarded by fans of Sergei Shekhovtsov, an artist of the Sovremennik and Moscow Art Theater theaters. His film characters were remembered for their directness and integrity, and also for such an attentive, squinting look, reminiscent of Vasily Shukshin.

Sergey Shekhovtsov was born in September 1961 in the Cossack patrimony - Krasnodar Territory, in the village of Spokoinaya. Parents worked as cattlemen on the collective farm, dreamed that their son would go to pedagogy or medicine. But Sergei, while still in school, fell ill with a craving for the stage. Shekhovtsov did not dare to storm Moscow theater schools and entered the Yaroslavl School, the department of the puppet theater actor. The young man did not receive a diploma in specialty, since from a student's bench he went to serve in the army.

Having paid his debt to his homeland, Sergei joined the ranks of the students of Vladimir Bogomolov and Viktor Monyukov at the Moscow Art Theater School. Among his classmates were the sons of Vyacheslav Nevinny and Alexander Mitta - Vyacheslav Jr. and Eugene, Mikhail Gorevoy and Maria Evstigneeva, Alexandra Tabakova and Mikhail Efremov. The latter, as Shekhovtsov said in an interview, became almost a relative.

In the 3rd year, on the initiative of Galina Volchek, friends created a creative studio "Contemporary-2", which lasted 4 years. In 1991, Mikhail's father, Oleg Nikolaevich, invited Shekhovtsov to the Moscow Art Theater. The actor served there until the death of Oleg Efremov in 2000, and relations with the new artistic director Oleg Tabakov did not work out.

Shortly before that, Efremov Sr. fired his son from the theater, and Mikhail and his friend Gorev created the project "Factory of theatrical events." Shekhovtsov made his debut in the drama "The Puppy" in 1988 and appeared in a couple of episodes in the 90s. And in the early 2000s he appeared at once in a number of criminal films - "Maroseyka, 12", "Men's work", "Antikiller", "Boomer", "Private detective". Sergey succeeded in the versatile roles of the manager in the film "The Bloody Lady" and the forester in the melodrama "Fern Flower", the military medic in the sitcom "Soldiers" and the taxi driver in the detective story "I'm Going Out to Look for You".

Together with Alexei Salpanov and Sergei Ugryumov, the actor played the driver of a heavy-duty car in the adventure series "Truckers", in a series about a murder that took place in a temporary quarantine.

In "Forgiven Sunday" Shekhovtsov got the main role of the father of a young man about to get married. But Sergei's hero suspects that the bride is his illegitimate daughter, the fruit of a fleeting passion in his youth. The children turned out to be worthy of their father - they received a good education, they were not labeled as representatives of the "golden youth".

In 1998, the head of the Moscow Art Theater, Oleg Efremov, put Sergei in front of a strange choice - to get an apartment or the title of Honored Artist of Russia. A family with two children and Maria's parents lived in cramped conditions near the Red Gate, in Moscow. Shekhovtsov chose the welfare of loved ones. But the actor's contribution to cinema, in whose filmography there are more than a hundred roles, was never appreciated - they were no longer nominated for the title.

In 2012, the Shekhovtsovs purchased a cottage in the Moscow region, in the village of Tomilino. Sergei was very happy that every family member had a secluded corner, and the ecology is all right, just a stone's throw from the capital.

The cause of death of Sergei Shekhovtsov was cardiac arrest. It happened suddenly, on the afternoon of July 30, 2018, near the house, when the actor went to walk the dog. The funeral took place in his native village Spokoinaya.
