In 1978, Sergei Makarov was drafted into the armed forces. But for athletes, especially of a higher level, military service usually took the form of playing for an army team. So it happened with the Chelyabinsk hockey player - Sergei was "called" by the Moscow CSKA, in which Makarov stayed until 1989. The athlete met the coach's expectations: in 1979 he became the best striker of the tournament at the world championship. Photos of the young hockey player began to appear on the front pages of sports publications, including foreign ones.

During the 80s, Sergei played in the five of Igor Larionov, which also included Vladimir Krutov (striker), Vyacheslav Fetisov and Alexey Kasatonov (defenders). In 1989, Sergei moved to Canada, where he started playing for the NHL Calgary Flames. A new stage in Makarov's sports career began, no less stellar than the Soviet one. After four years of successful performances, Sergei moved to the American San Jose Sharks. He finished his hockey career in the Dallas Stars, having played for a short time for the Swiss club Friborg-Gotteron.
