Sergei Grinkov lived for only 28 years, but over the years he managed to become an Olympic champion twice, and a world champion four times. Less prestigious awards can be listed for a long time. Sergei Mikhailovich Grinkov was born on February 4, 1967 in Moscow. Sergei's parents - Anna Filippovna and Mikhail Kondratyevich - raised two children. Natalia is seven years older than her brother. Five-year-old Seryozha began single skating classes at the CSKA sports school. Jumps that were weak for a single skater forced the coaches to transfer the young athlete to pair skating.

Despite the objection of both skaters, Grinkov was paired with Ekaterina Gordeeva, which determined their fate. In 1982, the couple was coached by Vladimir Zakharov. In the fall of 1983, coach Nadezhda Shevalovskaya (Gorshkova) and choreographer Marina Zueva took over the production of the numbers. A constant headache for adults who worked with a duo of young skaters was the restless nature of the teenager.

As a preschooler, Sergei independently went on a journey home from kindergarten, "putting on the ears" of his parents and the police. Under the leadership of the strongest in Soviet ice sports at that time, coach Stanislav Zhuk, the Grinkov - Gordeeva duet won the world championship. Then they won silver medals at the European and USSR championships.

After the scandal around the moral character of Stanislav Zhuk, the promising duo trains with Stanislav Leonovich, the dance numbers are again put on by Zuev. In 1987, the pair conquered all the peaks, but each of them is won through the labor of many hours of daily workouts. As Katya later recalled, over the years of joint work, the partner dropped her only twice. As a result of one of these falls, Gordeeva ended up in the hospital with a concussion.

For three years professionals are deprived of the opportunity to compete with amateurs, but in 1993 the International Skating Union and the International Olympic Committee change the rules and allow professional skaters to participate in the Olympic Games. Thanks to the opportunities opened up in 1994, Grinkov and his wife amassed an impressive collection of gold medals.

And on December 31, 1989, the lovers kissed for the first time. In 1990, Sergei Grinkov received a separate apartment, in which he invited his bride to live. The death of Sergei's father, Mikhail Kondratyevich Grinkov, prevented the wedding immediately.

1991 for the star couple was a turning point in several issues. On April 20, the young registered their relationship in the Moscow registry office, and on April 28 they got married. The beginning of the nineties for many former Soviet people became a moment of searching for a spiritual path. Young skaters were no exception. On November 20, 1995, at a morning training session in Lake Placid, Sergei Grinkov received a massive heart attack. Everything happened quickly - the skater fell on the ice, whispered the last words to his frightened wife: “I feel so bad” and died in the hands of doctors who could not help. The promising athlete, young husband and happy father was only 28 years old.

Shortly before the fatal training session, Grinkov was undergoing medical examinations in Russia and the United States. Doctors noted joint problems and the consequences of injuries (the athlete was especially worried about a back injury), but they did not see critical heart problems. Sergei's father also died of a second heart attack, but fifteen years passed between the first and second strokes in the life of Grinkov Sr. And in the life of Sergei - only a few hours.

The first attack overtook the young athlete at night, while sleeping. In the morning, he attributed the pain to the consequences of a back injury and went to prepare for the Stars on Ice tour. Father Nikolai performed the last service over Grinkov's body at CSKA, right on the ice. The body was buried at the Vagankovsky cemetery.
