Until 1997, the guy's training took place in the nearby military town of Mirny. Prior to this period, he repeatedly became the champion of Russia and won international youth tournaments.

At the age of 17, Sergei entered the RVVDKU, in parallel with his studies, performing at tournaments in sambo, boxing, hand-to-hand fighting and kickboxing.
