Biography
Savage Garden is an Australian duo that performed pop-rock songs in 1997-2001. The creative biography of the group turned out to be short, but during this time the musicians managed to create dozens of hits and release their albums in millions of copies.
fact
Creation history and composition
The founder of the group is Darren Hayes, who was born in 1972 in Brisbane, Australia. From a young age he loved to sing and performed not only at school concerts, but also in the musicals Man Of Steel and Bye Bye Birdie. Because of his addiction to music, Hayes never graduated, leaving college with the intention of becoming a professional performer. In 1993, he saw an ad in the Brisbane newspaper Time Off: multi-instrumentalist Daniel Jones was looking for a vocalist for his band. This episode begins the story of the creation of the famous team.
At the audition, Darren showed himself not in the best way - his voice was constantly breaking with excitement, but he was the only candidate, so Jones had to agree. The young group took the name Red Edge and began performing at local concerts, later more performers joined them, forming a full-fledged band. However, things for the team did not go so well.
Daniel and Darren, who by that time had found a common language and discovered a passion for independent songwriting, decided to continue performing as a duet. Initially they called themselves Crush, but soon the name had to be changed as it turned out that there was already a British band with that name. Darren suggested Savage Garden - these words were taken from Anne Rice's novel "The Vampire Chronicles."

Music
The debut album was recorded in 1995. The musicians made 150 copies and sent them to the producers, whose contacts they managed to get, only 1 person responded - John Woodruff, who previously collaborated with Baby Animals. He agreed to take on a managerial job and arranged a contract for the guys with Roadshow Music.
On July 1, 1996, the single I Want You was released, which quickly went platinum thanks to its fresh and original sound. After just 2 weeks of being on the Australian charts, the song won an Aria's award. She was followed by 2 more hits - Truly Madly Deeply and To The Moon And Back, which were sold in huge circulation in the form of singles, and a video was shot for the song Break Me Shake Me in 1997.
In the United States, the band became famous thanks to radio consultant Guy Zapoleon, who heard the band's music at a conference in Australia and took copies of the albums with him to his homeland for colleagues. Soon Savage Garden songs were already played on 50 radio stations.
After the first success, the musicians got the right to choose a record company from several dozen lucrative offers. The guys decided to collaborate with Columbia Records, and the label made copies of their albums for worldwide sales.
In 1998, the group embarked on an international tour, covering Asia, Europe and America. In the same year, they reissued their old album Savage Garden, adding a bonus CD The Future of Eartly Delites, and their producer Wahler Afanasieff received a Grammy for promoting the duo.
In July 1996, the single I Want You was released, which immediately took off to the top of the Australian charts and brought the musical duo their first award - the ARIA prize in the Breakthrough artist nomination. Their second work To The Moon & Back was no less successful and attracted the attention of the major studio Columbia Records, and the first full-length album Savage Garden broke all national records.
Soon Savage Garden gained international popularity: their new ballad Truly Madly Deeply exploded the American and European charts, and the team received multi-platinum status. The revenues from the sales of records made the musicians very wealthy people, but money and fame did not unite them, but on the contrary, quickly led to the end of a brilliant career.

It all started when Hayes decided to move to New York and bought himself an apartment there. Jones chose to stay in an old studio in his native Brisbane: he was not at all a travel lover, and endless travels and interviews were seriously tired of him.
The collaboration of the guys did not end there: they prepared the next album, constantly keeping in touch by email and phone, and for studio work they reunited in an Australian studio. The result was the album Affirmation, markedly different from the previous ones in its softer ballad sound. In just 2 weeks of sales, the album was twice declared platinum, and after 2 months the circulation exceeded 4 million copies.
The musicians supported the album with another world tour. The doors of the largest concert halls in the world were thrown open for Savage Garden, they sang with Luciano Pavarotti and performed at the closing ceremony of the Sydney Olympic Games. Unfortunately, there was no continuation - after the tour, the interests of Daniel and Darren diverged completely. The performance in Cape Town on December 17, 2001 was the last for the duo.
The news of the breakup came as a surprise to Daniel himself: Darren did not discuss this issue with him personally, but reported it in an interview with The Courier-Mail, and as a result, Jones learned about the dissolution of his own group from the morning newspaper. The musician by that time guessed that the future of the group was in question, but he did not expect to be informed about it in this form, however, he refrained from public accusations and quarrels with his partner.
After the breakup, Chase took up a solo career and preparing for the debut album Spin. The style of his music was reminiscent of the work of Savage Garden, but instead of a soft sound, he added R&B to the songs. Daniel's solo career was going well, but the representatives of the label were still unhappy with him, because they counted on the same sales volumes that the duo provided in full.
Darren went into production and opened his own label Powdered Sugar, the first client of which was the group Aneiki, which he himself created. Although Savage Garden never released the promised 3rd album, the musical material created over several years of collaboration brought a lot of joy to the fans. In 2002 and 2003, the already disbanded group again received 3 APRA Awards, and their singles still break sales records and are present in the world charts.
4 years after the disbandment, the disc The best of SAVAGE GARDEN Truly Madly Completely was released, which included the band's selected hits. Darren had to present the collection alone: Daniel flatly refused to participate in the compilation of the album and did not go on tour in support of it, however, this did not affect the sales of tickets and discs - in July 2006 the disc went platinum.
Both musicians now live in London with their beloved ones. Daniel's wife was the singer Kathleen de Leon, the lead singer of the Hi-5 group, and Darren legalized his relationship with boyfriend Richard Cullen in 2006. Hayes' coming out took place in the early 2000s, by that time he had been dating his chosen one for 2 years, and their joint photos often appeared in the media.
In 2018, the Savage Garden bar opened in London, which, however, has nothing to do with musicians. On Twitter, they expressed dissatisfaction with the inconsistent borrowing of their name, but Daniel and Darren are not going to go to court yet.
