Salvatore Adamo was born on October 31, 1943 in the city of Comiso. He is Italian by nationality. For the parents of Antonio and Conchita, he was the firstborn: after him 5 more girls and a boy were born. His father worked as a miner and left Italy in 1947, as he was offered a job in Belgium. Having settled in the city of Mons, he moved the family to his place.

The children of Adamo grew up knowing Italy from the stories of their parents, the national dishes that their mother prepared, and the Neapolitan songs that their father sang. The group of friends who surrounded Salvatore as a child was multicultural, and he never experienced difficulties due to his origin.

The disease was overcome thanks to the efforts of doctors and the dedication of parents: the mother, in order to see Salvatore every evening, got a job as a maid in a house of foreigners nearby, and his father visited him on weekends. The singer recalls that during these visits, Antonio Adamo told unusually fascinating stories about his military past, and only as an adult, he learned that most of them he invented to entertain his son.

The boy inherited musical talent from his father. He sang in a church choir and dreamed of mastering the guitar. When Salvatore told his family about his desire, Girlando's grandfather sent him the first instrument from Sicily as a birthday present. That old guitar, on which the chords were scribbled, is still kept in a place of honor in the Villa Salvatore. The parents did not have enough money to pay for the lessons of the game - Salvatore attended only 4 classes, but this was enough for him to memorize the basic techniques and then began to exercise himself.

The parents knew about their son's talent, but did not take it seriously and did not think that singing would ever become his profession. Salvatore studied well at school and loved foreign languages, so after graduation he went to a Catholic college to become a teacher. His passion for music, however, did not leave him in those years.

In 1959, the young man took part in the Radio Luxembourg competition and unexpectedly took 1st place. Then his voice was first heard on the air and became known throughout the country. Adamo recalls how he was almost kicked out of the preliminary audition: someone shouted from the audience that he was "disgusting nasal" and "who even advised him to sing."

A member of the selection committee stood up for him, and only after that Salvatore was able to finish his speech. The young man won a resounding victory and won a large sum, which he spent on an Opel Olympia car - a gift to his father. This success has long defined Adamo's musical career. He continued to perform songs in a youth style and recorded 3 debut compositions in 1962: Cara bambina, Poor fool and Rosina.

The lyrical theme was first clearly manifested in the song Si j'osais, after which Salvatore gained fame as a sensual and sophisticated performer. In the compositions of his authorship, the influence of French poetry, in particular Baudelaire and Verlaine, as well as the intonation of Brel and Brassens, was easily traced. Gradually, the dance motifs left Adamo's work, giving way to brooding slow melodies.

In 1963, the singer's debut album "63/64" was released. For most of the songs, Salvatore himself composed the music and lyrics in French. 3 songs became hits: Vous Permettez, Monsieur, Sans toi ma mie and Tombe la neige. The latter was a kind of Adamo's business card, and one of his first videos was shot on it.

The doors of the largest concert halls in Paris and Brussels swung open for the young 20-year-old chansonnier. He sang the hit Tombe la neige (Snow is Falling) in several languages. He performed this composition in a duet with Muslim Magomayev. The Japanese version of the song was released as a separate single and sold 475,000 copies.

The following year, Adamo delighted his fans with his next masterpieces - Dolce Paola, La Nuit and Quand Les Roses. In 1965, his first solo concert took place in the Olympia Hall, which turned into a real triumph. After him, the sales of the young singer's records grew sharply. At first, the arrangements for the compositions for Salvatore were done by Osacre Senthal, later he was replaced by Alain Gorager. In 1970, the singer decided to do this work on his own.

Despite the fame of a recognized lyricist, Salvatore often turned to acute social topics. The song Inch 'Allah, written in 1967, is dedicated to the events of the "six-day" Arab-Israeli war. In it, he called the peoples to mutual understanding, which was not understood by all representatives of the Muslim world, and in some countries the composition was even banned.

The Middle East theme was resumed in 1985 in the song Les collines de Rabiah. Salvatore dedicated her to the people of Lebanon, who were then engulfed in civil war. In 1979, he sang about post-war Vietnam and the plight of his children in the ballad Tout le long du Mekong. The song Les Gratte-Ciel ("Skyscrapers") after the events of September 11, 2001 seemed to many as prophetic.

In 1967, the performer got a chance to try his hand at cinema. He was invited to the film "The Arnault Family" directed by Leo Joanno, and immediately to one of the main roles. Salvatore accepted the offer and, in addition to acting, prepared a new song Vivre for the tape. After 3 years, he took part in the creation of another film "Island of Poppies", becoming not only an actor, but also a director and producer.

In the USSR, Salvatore Adamo had tremendous success. Arriving at the Union for the first time in 1972, he assembled a full Luzhniki stadium - 25 thousand spectators came to the concert. Later he visited Leningrad and Riga, where he was received with the same enthusiasm. Over time, love did not pass - his tour was greeted in Russia with the same admiration.

The singer's popularity peaked in the 1970s. Then he became a world star, performing songs in 9 languages ​​in the most famous concert halls in the world, including Carnegie Hall. He visited Japan more than 30 times.

In 1984, Adamo began to have health problems. The singer suffered a heart attack and was forced to stop performing and work on a new disc. In 2003, the disease returned, but, like the last time, Salvatore managed to overcome it and resumed touring.

In subsequent years, his fame gradually began to decline, but the singer continued to work hard. The new album L'Amour n'a jamais tor continued to sell very well in 2016. His later work fully revealed his mature talent, depth of thought and professionalism.

The famous singer has one marriage, which has survived to this day. With his future wife Nicole Durand, he met at the age of 14. A friend, 2 years older than him, always believed in his talent and supported Salvatore. Over time, the youthful friendship grew into serious feelings. The singer admits that his personal life has always been peaceful and prosperous - no crowd of fans could distract him from the love of his life.

The wedding of Salvatore and Nicole took place in the winter of 1969. The couple are still together, they have raised three children. The eldest son Anthony became a pilot, and the younger Benjamin and daughter Amelie followed in their parents' footsteps and became musicians. Ben lives in England and works independently, and Amelie, a singer and owner of an amazing voice, sings at concerts with her father. When Antonio Adamo died in 1966, Salvatore took care of the younger sisters and brother, and provided them with upbringing and maintenance.
