The band released their debut album Gates to Purgatory in 1984 on Noise Records, with a clear emphasis on the occult. Despite the mixed reviews, sales were good for a team that was just beginning to conquer the professional scene. The next disc, Branded and Exiled, became the logical continuation of the "debut", but the real success awaited the guys later.

The turning point in the biography of Running Wild came in 1987 with the release of Under Jolly Roger. The main theme of the songs was piracy, which set the band's creativity apart from other representatives of the German scene. While critics weren't overly praising their work, fans appreciated the group's efforts, which helped it quickly expand internationally.

The fourth album Port Royal was a continuation of the previous theme and was also commercially profitable, the musicians managed to sell almost 20 million copies of it worldwide. The Blazon Stone, which appeared in their discography in 1991, was well received by the fans, but it failed to achieve its former popularity. With the release of the Black Hand Inn disc in 1994, the team moved away from the pirate theme altogether. At the same time, problems began within the group, the constant change of the composition interfered with the development of popularity.

The next 3 discs (Masquerade, The Rivalry, Victory), released in the period from 1995 to 2000, became a kind of trilogy related to a single theme - the struggle between good and evil. The artists did not stop there and until 2016 they recorded 5 more records. The team had to go through a crisis, including a breakup in 2009 and a reunion in 2011.

The new albums were perceived by the public without the former enthusiasm, for some time Rolf had to record songs alone, sometimes with the help of his comrades. Now the group is still afloat, the musicians are no longer gaining new fans, but there are enough of those who have listened to the songs since the inception of Running Wild to perform at solo concerts and delight with new compositions.

The group has a Twitter page where photos of the team are published, as well as posts about past and upcoming events related to the musical activities of Running Wild. In November 2019, the band announced the release of a new single and video Ride On The Wild Side, which was included in the new mini-album Crossing The Blades.
