Biography
The beginning of the 1990s became a time of renewal for the country in all areas. The composition of the popular stage did not stand aside, which was replenished almost every day with new names and high-profile projects: Ivanushki International, Strelki, Demo and, of course, the Hands Up! Group, which was firmly established for many years in the first places of all possible charts.
fact
Creation history and composition
In 1993, a meeting took place that literally turned the lives of two ordinary guys - Sergei Zhukov and Alexei Potekhin. Both young men at that time worked at the Samara radio "Europe Plus", but dreamed of more than a career as a provincial DJ. The meeting of these two creative people was the beginning of the path to fame and success, as well as the actual birthday of the new group.
The roles of the musicians in the joint project were distributed by themselves. Sergey Zhukov became a soloist, performer of vocal parts, in fact - the face of the collective. It was with him that young beauties most often fell in love, touched by the heartfelt, albeit unpretentious, songs of the "Hands Up" group.
Sergey was born on May 22, 1976 in Dimitrovgrad, in the Ulyanovsk region. Since childhood, Zhukov was fond of music, graduated from a music school in piano, and then the Academy of Arts in Samara.
The second participant in the project - Alexei Potekhin - on the contrary, initially did not dream of becoming a musician. Alexey was born in Novokuibyshevsk (Samara region) on April 15, 1972.
The musician's specialty is very brutal: Potekhin graduated from a river technical school, becoming a technician-shipbuilder, and then he studied at a technical university. But the craving for creativity turned out to be stronger, and immediately after university, Alexey began working as a DJ. And in the new project, the musician acted as a keyboard player.
fact
Music
The young performers recorded their first joint musical experiments in Togliatti, where they went soon after they met. These were songs in English. The fact is that Sergei Zhukov at that time liked the work of the Dutch musician Ray Sleingard, who worked in the genre of electronic dance music, and the singer tried to imitate his idol in everything. Even the first name of the team - "Uncle Ray and Company" - was dedicated to Slayngard.
The history of the formation of the group was accompanied by interesting facts that ultimately led Sergei and Alexei to all-Russian popularity. It was difficult for young performers to get into the market without funding, but enterprising musicians found an original way out. They recorded their first compositions on pirated copies of popular authors. Unpretentious motives were remembered from the first line, and the guys received the first portion of fame, they were invited to concerts.
The parties and short performances organized by Zhukov and Potekhin in Togliatti gradually became popular: young people liked incendiary dance music. But such fame was not enough for the musicians, and in 1994 Sergey and Alexey set off to conquer the capital. The artists consider the same year to be the date of the founding of the group, although at that time the familiar name "Hands Up" had not yet appeared.
Moscow received the performers warmly: on the very first day, the musicians were at the rap music festival and took first place. They started talking about young talents, and the first photos of Zhukov and Potekhin appeared in music publications. However, real glory was still far away.
After the first success, the musicians faced their first difficulties: Sergei and Alexei had nowhere to live, there was practically no money either. The guys worked as DJs, hosted parties and events, but the funds to promote the project were sorely lacking.
And here Zhukov and Potekhin were once again incredibly lucky. The musicians met Andrei Malikov, who, seeing talent in provincial DJs, became the first producer of the group. The name "Hands Up" appeared at the same time - this phrase was often shouted by Alexey and Sergey at discos from behind the DJ console. But an interesting case convinced the musicians to finally stop at this version of the name.
Young people left a cassette with songs on the radio "Maximum". Since the caption on the cover said that this music would make listeners raise their hands up, but the name of the group itself did not appear there, radio hosts Olga Maksimova and Konstantin Mikhailov decided to announce the name of the musical group, which they considered appropriate - "Hands up".
A month later, the band's debut album, entitled "Breathe Evenly", was released. The compositions "Malysh" and "Student" literally blew up all charts and discos, becoming the hallmark of the "Hands Up" group for many years. Such coveted fame came instantly, and a month later Zhukov and Potekhin shot two videos and went on tour.
All the concerts of the group were held "with a bang" and gathered full houses. In the same 1997, the group "Hands Up" took part in several music festivals, and both listeners and colleagues in the pop workshop began to recognize Sergei and Alexei. It is noteworthy that the musicians managed not only to perform and record new compositions, but also to create arrangements for the songs of other artists. For example, Hands Up worked with Vyacheslav Dobrynin.
Already in 1998, Zhukov and Potekhin confidently broke all records for the number of sales of the "Turn it up!" Album, becoming the most demanded performers of the Russian pop scene. “My baby”, “Ay, yay, yay, girl”, “Only dreaming about you”, “He kisses you” - perhaps the whole country knew these songs by heart.
Prestigious music awards appeared in the collection of awards - this is the annual award of the Russian recording industry in the nominations Russian Radio Hit, Album of the Year, and the Golden Gramophone statuette in the categories Performer of the Year, Song of the Year, and an award from Love Radio for "Best Love Song". The "Hands Up" group becomes a laureate of awards of music channels Muz-TV, RU.TV.
And in 1999 the group again became the record holder - the next disc, "Without Brakes", sold more than 12 million copies. However, as the musicians admitted later, the young people did not receive any profit, since the producer of the group took almost all the proceeds in his own pocket.
For this reason, a year later, the Ruki Vverkh group said goodbye to Andrei Malikov, and the group has already recorded the following albums under its own label called B-Funky Production. In the same year, another disc appeared, called "Hello, this is me", which was remembered by the fans for the compositions "Alyoshka", "Forgive me", "Serves you right."
The artists tried to record at least one album a year, and the premieres took place in late spring. This was done so that fans of popular music would buy a disc with exciting new dance tracks on vacation. In the early 2000s, the discography of the musicians was replenished with the albums "Little Girls" with the hit "Take me away sooner", "The end of pop, everybody dance", which included the hit "The girlfriends are standing," and others.
In parallel, the musicians helped young performers to get on their feet, and also constantly toured with concerts, winning the hearts of new and new fans. At this time, the Hands Up logo appeared, which later appeared on the group's Instagram avatar.
The musicians' creativity was accompanied by incredible popularity among young girls. The artists were watched in entrances, on the streets, fences were demolished at concerts, letters were sent in bags. The artists had to turn to the services of security agencies in order to avoid trouble.
It seemed that such popularity would be, if not eternal, then very long. But fate decreed otherwise, and in 2006 Sergey Zhukov and Alexey Potekhin shocked fans with the news that the team was breaking up. There were many rumors about why the Hands Up group had broken up. The musicians themselves admitted that they were tired of the frantic concert rhythm, constant competition with young performers and even from each other.
Be that as it may, the guys decided to start solo projects. Sergei toured with new songs, Alexei created the "Raise Your Hands Up" band and continued to perform. However, neither Potekhin nor Zhukov managed to achieve the same popularity to which the stars are accustomed, performing as part of the "Hands Up" group. Later, Alexey switched to producing, leaving the stage for good. Sergey Zhukov continued to work under the label that brought fame to the musicians.
The idols of the 90s met again in 2010 at the Let Them Talk program, hosted at that time by Andrey Malakhov. It was a benefit performance of a non-existent group that delighted the fans of Zhukov and Potekhin.
In 2012, fans were in for another surprise. Sergey Zhukov announced that the group "Hands Up" is returning with a new album - "Open the door for me." However, the jubilation of the fans was premature - under the usual name Sergei already performed alone, without Potekhin.
In 2016, Sergey managed to surprise and delight fans once again. The musician presented a video for the song "When we were young." Stas Kostyushkin, Shura, Andrey Grigoriev-Appolonov, Alexey Ryzhov took part in the filming of the video. According to the plot, these performers, very old, while away the rest of their days in a nursing home. However, the memories of the dashing days of youth do not give the musicians rest, and the forgotten idols throw a fun party.
fact
"Hands up!" now
Now the former colleagues in the group, as is known from the media, do not communicate. Alexey continues to perform with his own team. In an interview, the musician claims that he was treated dishonestly, deceiving the rights to the name "Hands Up!": Potekhin allegedly signed the papers without reading what he agreed with.
Sergey Zhukov also tours and writes new songs. At concerts, he collects full houses. The creativity of a pop group is in demand not only in Russia. In 2017, the musician visited the "Slavic Festival" in Belarus, where Chris de Burg, Grigory Leps, Stas Mikhailov, Natasha Koroleva, Nyusha, Yegor Creed also performed.
The musician also released the compositions "Take the Keys", "You Cry in the Dark" and, apparently, is preparing to present the next album. Fans will be able to find out about the release of the album on the band's official website. The musician does not think about completing his creative biography, unless the children, whom he loves very much, ask him about.
In 2018, the song "You Cry in the Dark" brought the team the "Song of the Year" and "Golden Gramophone" awards. In the same year, a video for the single "Dances" was released. The video was filmed in Mexico. In addition to the main work, the lead singer of the "Hands Up" group does not forget to appear in television projects. So, together with his stage colleague Stas Kostyushkin, Sergey became a guest of the Soyuz Studio music TV show on TNT.
