Biography
Roy Nelson is an athlete whose name is widely known in the world of mixed martial arts. The fighter also enters the ring under the nickname Big Village. He competes at the Bellator MMA Association in the heavy weight category. Nelson has participated in UFC, IFL, EliteXC fights several times and holds the title of former champion among IFL heavyweights.
Roy Nelson was born in the U.S. state of Nevada, in Las Vegas, on June 20, 1976. In his youth he loved sports and was fond not only of wrestling, but also of baseball, football and even was a member of the Las Vegas Blackjacks. Roy played for the rugby team for two seasons: in 2002 and 2003.
At the age of 16, the teenager began to study Shaolin kung fu, and after a while under the mentoring of John Lewis, a former UFC fighter, began to practice jiu-jitsu. Roy had an objective perception of reality and his own opinion on what was going on around him. Combining training with study, he sought to make a contribution to the life of his hometown.
In Las Vegas, it is not easy for a young man to stick to the right moral foundations. Knowing this, Nelson worked as a volunteer and after school devoted attention and time to difficult children. Unlike his peers, the athlete did not use drugs and wanted to help his neighbors, doing it not in words.
In 2003, Roy performed for the first time in the professional ring. So began Nelson's career in MMA. In 2009, he received a black jiu-jitsu belt from the hands of trainer Renzo Gracie.

Combat sport
The knowledge gained from jiu-jitsu, Roy used in the first battles with opponents in the Octagon. The athlete managed to easily overcome stronger opponents. Realizing that it is possible to get into the UFC in different ways, Nelson chose a non-trivial way. He became a member of the popular reality show The Ultimate Fighter. Organizers of the program remove training and fights of applicants to enter the UFC, and the winner of the show becomes the owner of the contract with the promotion, having fans around the world.
Roy Nelson repeatedly defeated his rivals in the ring. Among them were Kimbo Slice and Brendan Shaub. Victories brought the athlete the status of the unconditional leader of the tournament and opened the prospect of getting into the big sport. The next vis-a-vis in the Octagon for Nelson was the Dutch fighter Stefan Struve, known by the pseudonym Skyscraper.
Struve's kick, tactics and high stature were a promo legend, but the wrestler suffered from a lack of endurance that Nelson was not. The first round of the meeting ended with a knockout and the victory of the young opponent.
Organizers decided to push Junior Dous Santos, the strongest of the promotion fighters, with the Great Village. Roy didn't have enough skills at the time. He did not keep up with the Brazilian, and it was not so easy to repel strong blows. Santos emerged from the scrum as the winner. But this fight brought Roy the love of the spectators, as the fighter managed to hold out undefeated until the judges' decision.
The next fight, in which Nelson was destined to be in the role of victim, was a meeting with Frank Mir. Roy was not in the best physical shape, for which he was criticized. The athlete's comments were parried by the responses that he was going to lose weight to move into the light heavyweight category. This did not happen, but the defeat was followed by victory.
Nelson managed to snatch it in battle with Mirko Krokop Filipovic. Fans were sure that the long-time participant of the battles will come out of the fight the winner, but in the 3rd round Nelson held a knockout and brought the opponent out of balance.
The top athlete who got in Roy's way was Fabriciou Werdum, the first fighter to defeat Fedor Emelianenko, and a specialist in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Nelson could not stand, but the battle was so spectacular that it turned out to be the best performance of the evening. Roy Nelson entered the top 10 of the UFC, although few believed in his ability to take the title.
The athlete was often put up in fights to "test" the contenders for the top 10 in the category of heavy weight. Those who managed to survive received a ticket to the top ten heavyweights of the UFC. Roy's victories in the Octagon were followed by defeats. He managed to defeat Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Antonio Silva, Cheika Congo, but could not resist against Mark Hunt, Alistair Overeem, Josh Barnett and Derrick Lewis.
Having changed the promotion, Roy Nelson has a chance to prove himself from a new side. Becoming a Bellator fighter, he decided to take the chance and demonstrate a renewed self. The athlete's tactics have not changed, but often it has paid off and demonstrated efficiency. Nelson surrounds the opponent and waits for the moment to strike overhead.
At the moment of rapprochement, the fighter makes clear and accurate blows, the answer to which withstands without damage and injuries. Only a couple of fighters managed to knock Roy out. Roy Nelson's performances are remembered for their brightness and dynamism, but the fighter still fails to enter the top 10 of the best athletes in his category.
