Biography

Boxer Roy Jones Jr. is the only fighter in the world with gold belts in the middleweight, super middleweight, heavyweight and heavyweight title. The athlete, who was often compared to Mike Tyson, is also famous for his impeccable statistics: during his career he had 74 fights, of which 65 ended in victory (47 by KO) and only 9 - defeat.

fact

Childhood and adolescence

Roy Levesta Jones Jr. was born on January 16, 1969, in Pensacola, Florida. The boxer's father, Roy Sr., was a Vietnam veteran. After his service, he briefly worked at a naval base near Pensacola, before moving to trainers and opening his own room. The head of the family knew firsthand what professional boxing is: the man spent his whole life in the ring. The mother of the future star, Carol, ran the household (the family owned a small pig farm).

The appearance of the boxing legend is due to the father who brought his son into the sport. It is worth noting that Roy Sr. was very strict and even cruel to his child, but Jones Jr. himself subsequently noted that it only hardened his character. In an interview with the media, the athlete said that the father forced him to watch cockfights to strengthen his character. As a child, he watched blood and feathers fly in the sides during the fight, and the defeated bird, which the opponent's spurs rinsed its sides, was still trying to fight.

When the son was tired or for some reason could not perform this or that task, the head of the family, with the help of physical force, explained to him that life is a movement, and simple is like death. In a fit of anger, Roy Sr. could even run into a jaded child with a flask. The father deliberately awakened the fighter's instincts in the offspring. The man wanted his son's aggression and will to win to prevail over other desires and emotions. The coach gathered children from all over the district in his hall. The guys came there because there was nowhere to go in the countryside, and little Roy - because there was nowhere to run.

It is worth noting that, despite the harsh methods of education, Roy Jr. never accused his father of excessive cruelty, because the head of the family to take him to competitions in other cities, tirelessly worked on several jobs.

And yet the idyll in the family was not always. In 2005, after losing in the third round of the confrontation with the American Antonio Tarver, Jones Jr. blamed his failure on the pope and refused to cooperate with him. However, four years later, the father and son resumed working together. The reason was preparation for the fight against Omar Cheika, which Jones won.

Boxing

In 1984, Roy Jones Jr. won the Youth Olympic Games, which were held in the United States. Two years later, he won the Golden Gloves tournament. At the age of 19, he participated in the Seoul Olympics. In the 1st middleweight title, Roy easily dealt with rivals. Everyone was sure that the gold would go to Jones, but in the final the judges gave the medal to Park Shihun.

Jones' first opponent in the professional ring was Ricky Randall. The meeting ended with Roy's unconditional victory. On May 22, 1993, the IBF middleweight title was fought by Bernard Hopkins. After 12 rounds, all the judges gave the victory to Jones.

In June 1996, Jones defeated Eric Lucas and moved to light heavyweight. In November 1996, he held his first light-heavyweight bout. His opponent was Mike McCullum. Roy fought quite cautiously, and this tactic allowed him to win. On July 18, 1998, the WBC and WBA light heavyweight division took place with Lou Del Valle. At the end of the match, all the judges gave the victory to Jones.

On March 1, 2003, Roy lifted into a heavy weight and met WBA world champion John Ruiz, whom he defeated. He then returned to light-heavyweight. In 2003, after defeating Ruiz, the WBA appointed Jones as a mandatory challenger to Vitali Klitschko, but the fight did not take place.

On November 8, 2003, the athlete met with WBC light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver. In a hard-fought battle, Jones won by a majority of the votes of the judges. Later, Jones' professional biography was supplemented with meetings with boxers Felix Trinidad, Glen Johnson, Bernard Hopkins and Denis Lebedev.

In 2014 and 2015, Roy had six fights, all of which ended early. On July 26, 2014, the fighter knocked out Briton Corti Fry in the fifth round, and on September 26 he won by knockout over Hani Atiyo. In 2015, early victories ended against Willie Williams, Paul Vazquez, Eric Watkins. On December 12, Jones lost by knockout in a ratings fight against Enzo Maccarinelli.

On February 17, 2017, a fight between Jones and Bobby Gunn took place for the vacant WBF world title. Roy dominated the whole fight. At the beginning of the 8th round Gunn refused to continue the meeting, and the referee recorded Jones' victory by TKO.

Music

In 2001, Jones began working on the solo rap album Round One: The Album. The album, which contains 19 songs, appeared on the shelves in early 2002. A music video was shot on the track "And Still". In 2004, Roy founded the hip-hop group Body Head Bangerz. In the same year, the band released their debut single and music video for the track "Can't be touched" as well as the compilation album "Body Head Bangerz, Vol. 1".

The EP "Roy Jones Jr. Presents Body Head Bangerz" was released in 2015. This time, the 3-minute videos were filmed on "Load Up" and "Can't Lose". A year after his release, Roy starred in director Araik Ohanesian's "Keep hitting, baby!" Colleagues of the famous boxer on the set were actors Mikhail Porechenkov, Nastasia Samburskaya, Igor Vernik, Anna Tsukanova-Kott, Daniil Rahrusev and Teimuraz Tonia.

Personal life

Despite the fact that Roy is officially married and has three children (sons deAndre Jones, DeSean Jones, Roy Jones III), the network has very little information about the personal life of a martial artist. The wife of the former world light heavyweight champion is Natalie. As long as Jones earns money, his faithful maintains the house order and raises children.

The athlete has repeatedly said that he cannot stay separated from his family for a long time, so in 2012, when Jones came to Russia as part of a sports and music tour, his sons and wife were with him. Then at sheremetyevo airport the famous fighter was met by a delegation headed by the leader of the motorcycle club "Night Wolves" Aleksandr Saldostanov and singer Elena Maximova.

In November, Roy and Natalie visited Yakutsk. The couple took part in the sacred rite of purification of algys, rode dog sleds, and tasted national dishes of Yakut cuisine. Immediately after the completion of the introductory tour, a master class for young boxers took place.

Then came the music show. Then Russian singer Anastasia Lubimova performed on the same stage with Jones. Before flying to the United States, the boxer gave an interview to a local channel in which he said that despite the harsh climate, he and his family in Yakutia loved it. It is well known that in 2015, when the rapper returned to Russia to get citizenship, Natalie was by her husband's side.

fact

Roy Jones now

One of the most successful fighters in the history of boxing does not plan to end his fighting career in the near future. In July 2017, Jones and Prince Badie Ajam told the media about the upcoming fight at a joint press conference. The money raised at the event will be donated to the organization's fund, which aims to combat kidnapping and human trafficking. This boxing rematch will take place 11 years after their first fight in 2006, in which Jones secured victory by unanimous decision.

Also, the American, who officially received Russian citizenship in 2015, still hopes to fight former WBC champion Tony Bellew. However, the coach of the Briton has repeatedly refused to fight, explaining that this confrontation will not bring any benefit to his ward.

Among other things, in September on the channel "HBO" will be released another edition of the program "Under the Lights", in which Max Kellerman and Roy Jones will talk with boxers Saul Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin about their scheduled September 16 fight.

Back in early August, the former world champion in four weight classes shared his expectations of the fight held at the end of the same month between American boxer Floyd Mayweather and UFC champion Conor McGregor, saying that no tactic of the shocking Irishman will not bring the bronze medalist of the Olympic Games (1996) out of balance. As a result, Jones' prediction came true. The last fight marked not only the end of Mayweather's career, but also his 50th anniversary victory.

Despite the fact that in 2016 Roy started an account in VKontakte, to date his page is abandoned. Boxing fans learn about the latest news from the athlete's life from Facebook and Instagram, in which the fighter, who is 180 cm tall, regularly posts video-slicing from training sessions (both personal and his students), as well as photos from various events.
