Biography
Roy Andersson studied cinema at the Svenska Filminstitutet in Stockholm and made his first film, A Swedish Love Story, in 1970. The latter was a great success and established the filmmaker as one of the main artists of the rising generation of cinema Swedish. Roy Andersson is struggling to find partners for his second film. Giliap, which he finally decided to produce himself, was presented at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes in 1976, but did not enjoy the same public enthusiasm. This commercial failure marginalized a little more an already atypical filmmaker, follower of a naturalism praised by the greatest, including Ingmar Bergman.
He then turns to television, for which he shoots many commercials. Andersson sharpens his style, develops his universe and his very unusual spots win all the votes. For his commercials, he accumulates rewards and saves enough money to found Studio 24 in 1981, where he is free to produce and direct his films in complete independence. In 1987, his work was sufficiently renowned for the Swedish Ministry of Health to entrust him with the task of producing a spot on the theme of AIDS. The short film in question, Something Happened, did not cross censorship, Andersson refusing to submit to the ideas conveyed by the ministry.
Roy Andersson was talked about again in 1991 during the presentation of a fifteen-minute short film, World of Glory, which managed to win unanimous support from international critics. With this film, the director abandons any idea of narrative cinema. He shoots without script or cutting and prefers to work on his plans in the studio like a painter. This very singular style, in which Andersson, through a succession of sketches, evokes neither more nor less than the whole of humanity will very strongly characterize his future works.
It took twenty-five years for Roy Andersson to reveal to the public his third feature film, Songs from the Second Floor (2000). The shooting of the film, carried out over a period of four years, arouses an inordinate expectation. Composed of 46 sequence shots which are as many canvases, he constructs a surrealist universe where unusual situations describe in the tone of very dark humor a failing humanity. The film was part of the official selection of the Cannes film festival in 2000 and even won the jury prize. Seven years later, the filmmaker returned to Cannes in the Un Certain Regard selection with We, the Living, a work very specific to his unique universe. In 2008, his first film, A Swedish Love Story, was released in theaters.
