Biography
The provincial town of Dedovsk near Moscow was previously known, perhaps, only to townspeople, residents of nearby regions and some Muscovites. Now many football fans know about him. Indeed, on July 6, 1981, the idol of modern football fans, Roman Shirokov, was born here, who over the years of his sports career has gone from a player of amateur teams to the captain of the Russian national team, becoming the best football player in 2012 (according to the weekly Football).
fact
Childhood and youth
The biography of Roman Shirokov began, like other provincial boys, usually a kindergarten, school, street and football in the yard. His father, a factory worker (died of a stroke at age 52 in 2008), was seriously fond of football. Nikolai Sergeevich Shirokov became the first coach of Roman, instilled in him a love for this game, taught her the basics.
Later, a year after the death of his father, the athlete founded a children's football tournament in his small homeland. When the boy was 12 years old, his parents divorced, and Roma stayed with his mother. She still lives in the Moscow region.
fact
Football
Roman Shirokov's career began at the Torpedo football school, where his father and godfather took him. True, the boy studied there for only six months, and, having received a serious injury (a broken leg), he was forced to stop classes. After recovering from his injury, Roman moved to the Youth Sports School at the CSKA football club and soon played for the second team.
Running in it in the period from 1998 to 2001 was unsuccessful. Roman Shirokov did not make it into the baseline for a trivial reason - the presence of a conflict nature and frequent violations of the sports regime ("friendship" with alcohol).
As a result, the young footballer had to part with the army team and drive around not the most famous clubs, not staying for a long time anywhere. Roman Shirokov's track record includes Torpedo ZIL (2001 - only one match), the Istra team of the second division with the same name Istra (2002-2004), a team from Vidnoe (2004).
The 2005 season in the Moscow Region club was not bad for Shirokov. The footballer participated in 18 matches, scoring 3 goals. However, in 2006, a new coach Vladimir Shevchuk came to the team, and Roman Shirokov stopped getting into the base, after which he decided to change the club.
The next team was Kazan "Rubin" Kurban Berdyev. Here, too, we did not manage to stay long - only 4 matches and an injury. After restoration, Shirokov goes to the Wings of the Soviets for viewing. Failure again. I had to return to the amateur "Istra" for six months.
Roman Shirokov's real professional football career began in 2007, when at the age of 26 he moved to Khimki, a debut club in the Russian Premier League. The general director of the club signed a contract with the player without viewing, at his own peril and risk, and was not mistaken. Roman Shirokov became the leader of the team, scored in the first match, confidently led the club's game, and played the season successfully. As a result, he received an invitation to the Russian national team and left Khimki.
After such a successful season, the footballer received many invitations - from Spartak to Spanish clubs. But Roman Shirokov chooses "Zenith" and the Dutchman Dick Advocaat. Already in the first matches for the new club, Shirokov showed that he is a base player. In the summer of 2008, together with the team, he won 2 European club trophies at once - the UEFA Cup and the UEFA Super Cup. In the same year, Roman was awarded the title of Honored Master of Sports of the Russian Federation.
In 2009, the football community was involved in a conflict between two Zenit players - Roman Shirokov and goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev. The central midfielder accused the goalkeeper of having missed the ball. Both commented on the controversial situation in interviews. But the players could not continue the enmity for a long time, so they soon announced reconciliation.
Zenit has always been famous for its well-coordinated staffing. Perhaps because of the competition, Roman is forced to sit on the bench for a long time, entering the field only as a substitute, from time to time. When Advocaat was replaced by Anatoly Davydov at the coaching post, the situation still did not change - Shirokov almost did not play.
It seemed that Roman's career in the St. Petersburg club was coming to an end, and we had to start looking for a new one, but in winter 2010 Zenit was headed by Luciano Spalletti, who gave the midfielder another chance. From the very first matches, Shirokov became an important "cog" in the tactical scheme of the Italian coach, again deserved a call to the Russian national team. Together with Petersburgers, Roman became the champion of Russia in the seasons 2010 and 2011/2012 and the owner of the Cup of the country in 2010.
Once again, Roman Shirokov demonstrated his difficult character in 2013, when he had a serious conflict with the fans of the "blue-white-blue", which eventually led to a disqualification for several matches due to the shown indecent finger gesture. Perhaps because of this, a lease followed: Roman met 2014 at FC Krasnodar.
Here he is not lost. Together with the team from Kuban, Shirokov became the finalist of the Russian Cup, and the team demonstrated a beautiful combination game. In May, Roman gets another injury, and the trip to the 2014 World Cup is called into question.
Roman Shirokov's debut match for the Russian national team on March 26, 2008 could not be called successful - the team was defeated by the Romanian team with a score of 0: 3. But a ticket to Euro 2008 was obtained earlier, and Roman went with the national team to Austria and Switzerland. There, at first, things went wrong with Guus Hiddink's team - the team was defeated by the Spanish national team with a score of 1: 4. Football analysts blamed the defense for the defeat, including Roman Shirkov. Nevertheless, Shirokov still received the bronze medal of the 2008 European Championship.
The qualifying round for the 2010 FIFA World Cup took place without Shirokov, Dick Advocaat, who replaced Hiddink, did not invite him to the national team. Roman put on the jersey of the national team only at the end of 2010, in a game with the Bulgarian team. In this match, he scored the first goal for the national team.
Thanks to the confident play of Shirokov and the rest of the players, the Russian national team in the fall of 2011 arranged a trip to the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine, having won the decisive match, according to Roman, the collective farm - the Slovak national team.
At this tournament, Roman Shirokov already acted as the team leader together with Andrey Arshavin. Having started the group stage with a 4: 1 victory over the Czech Republic national team, the Russian team later showed itself not on its best side - first a zero draw with Poland, and then a 0: 1 defeat from Greece led to an inglorious departure in the group stage of the competition.
However, the following matches for the national team showed that Roman Shirokov's performance at the 2012 European Championship was only a temporary failure. His developed football intellect, verified passes and beautifully scored goals in subsequent games speak of the originality of this football player. Leading European experts consider Roman the best Russian player, and Evgeny Lovchev called him “the professor of Russian football”. His words were confirmed in 2013, when Shirokov became the captain of the Russian national team.
Having played the last 3 friendly matches before the 2014 World Cup, the Russian national team did not make the proper impression on the fans. In these games, the team lacked variety, sharpness in attack, thought and leader of most attacks, Roman Shirokov, who did not go to the World Cup due to injury. On June 9, 2014 he underwent a successful Achilles operation in Finland.
However, his sports career did not end there. Roman Shirokov was interested in famous Russian clubs, which could get an experienced midfielder almost for free. As a result, in 2014, until the end of the year, the footballer played for the Krasnodar club on loan. During this time, Roman took part in 8 games and scored 3 goals.
The following season, these indicators increased - 13 games and 4 goals scored, moreover, as a free agent, Shirokov joined Spartak Moscow and scored the first goal for the red-and-white in the first game against Lokomotiv. Thanks to his high performance, Roman remained at the Moscow club until 2016, when the board of directors canceled the contract with him by mutual agreement. The midfielder's salary at that time was € 2.7 million.
fact
Personal life
A tall, athletic young man (Roman's height is 183 cm, weight - 70 kg) has always aroused interest in the opposite sex. The football player's personal life has developed happily. Even in his youth, the athlete met his compatriot Catherine. At one time, young people were only friends, spent time in companies.
Later, their relationship became closer. In the mid-2000s, the young got married. Today, the family has two children - son Igor and daughter Victoria. Roman Shirokov's wife, Ekaterina, is a loyal fan of her husband. The football player's family members are fond of sports. Parents and their children regularly devote time to fitness.
In addition, Roman is an active user of social networks. On Twitter and Instagram, Shirokov communicates with fans, teammates, partners in the Russian national team, commenting on football and football events. Thanks to Twitter, Roman is known for his harsh and not always correct statements.
For example, he was not afraid to call Zenit fans morons when they nearly disrupted the 2011 Champions League match with the Cyprus APOEL. He got it from the "red and white" fans, whom he dubbed "pigs". After tweeting the 10,000th tweet, Shirokov stopped blogging.
Shirokov's conflict is known to the entire Russian football community. He, without hesitation in expressions, says what he thinks. So, at the finish of the 2011/2012 national championship, he rudely spoke about the readiness of the field at Petrovsky to the stadium agronomist, and when one of the fans tried to snatch his shirt from him after the match, Roman gave him an angry rebuke.
For such offenses, Zenit fans "awarded" Shirokov with chants with foul language and offensive banners in the stands.
fact
Roman Shirokov now
In October 2017, it became known that Roman Shirokov received a position in the management structure of the Moscow football club Dynamo. The footballer took over as Deputy General Director for Sports. Previously, this position was held by Vladimir Strzhalkovsky. In an interview with reporters, the athlete noted that he was never afraid of responsibility and was used to being responsible for his words and actions, therefore he was ready to fulfill new responsibilities.
Later, the post of adviser to the Minister of Physical Culture, Sports and Work with Youth of the Moscow Region was added to the number of Shirokov's posts. The athlete is responsible for developing the region's amateur football league. Roman participates in charity work, oversees the opening of sports centers in the cities of the region, holding relay races and sports events.
Now Roman Shirokov, in addition to his sports and social career, develops acting skills. The footballer starred in the TV series "Big Game", which was launched on the STS TV channel in September 2018. In the film, it was about a couch football critic who had the opportunity to lead the national team. In the summer of the same year, Roman Shirokov signed a contract with the Russia-24 TV channel, where he became a football expert.
