Biography
Bob Dylan is perhaps one of the most prominent figures in world music. This is the person who set and still sets the mood of folk and rock movements around the world. The hits Knockin on heavens door and All along the watchtower are unlikely to ever lose their relevance. In addition to music, Bob Dylan's creative biography is associated with acting and directing, as well as writing books.
fact
Childhood and youth
Dylan's real name is Robert Allen Zimmerman. The future musician was born on May 24, 1941 in the city of Dulutu, Minnesota. Bob's paternal ancestors immigrated to the United States from Odessa in 1905, fleeing persecution of Jews. The maternal grandparents were also immigrants who moved to America from Lithuania. The boy's parents, Abraham Zimmerman and Beatrice Stone, also belonged to the Jewish community.
When Dylan was barely six years old, the boy's family was shocked by the terrible news: Bob was diagnosed with polio. The family had to look for competent doctors who could help cope with the disease. So the Zimmermans moved to a town called Hibbing. From an early age, Bob Dylan was drawn to music: the boy did not leave the radio. Most of all, young Dylan was attracted to the blues and folk, especially with the performance of such musicians as Hank Williams and Woody Guthrie. Dylan was so impressed by the work of these artists that in his own early compositions, Bob will clearly trace the manner of playing and performing Williams and Guthrie.
Already when the family moved to Hibbing, little Robert began to master the first musical instruments. It was a guitar and a harmonica. Then the boy begins to try his hand at writing poetry. The future star does not ignore school concerts either: a rare event did without Dylan's performance. Later, as part of the ensemble, the musician appeared on the stages of clubs and bars, not at all embarrassed by the small number of the audience.
In 1959, Robert entered the university, but he always found time for musical studies. Around the same time, the artist began to actively give concerts in Minneapolis clubs. It was then that the first pseudonym of Robert Zimmerman was born - Bob Dylan. Despite the fact that there will be many more pseudonyms in Dylan's life, the very first one will remain the most important for him. Bob is short for Robert. The surname of the musician, according to one version, was borrowed from the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
fact
Music
As often happens, the young Dylan was so carried away by creativity that he decided to quit university and do only what he loved. In 1961, Bob moves to New York. There, the musician begins to communicate with colleagues in the stage workshop, gets acquainted with famous performers of that time and gradually begins to get involved in the so-called get-together. Dylan was even lucky enough to hang out with Woody Guthrie, the idol of childhood.
Bob Dylan's songs are gradually becoming known not only to folk music lovers. Once at a concert, Bob was a music critic Robert Shelton, who was impressed by Dylan's performance, and after a while, with his assistance, the musician signed an agreement with Columbia Record. This allowed us to begin work on the long-awaited album. The first Bob Dylan record appeared in 1962. She was called Bob Dylan. This album consisted of remakes of famous blues and folk songs, as well as a couple of Bob's original songs. Immediately after the release of his debut album, the musician officially took the name Bob Dylan.
A year later, Bob delighted fans with his second album The Freewheelin 'Bob Dylan, whose compositions are filled with political protest. Dylan's director insisted that the songs from this disc be performed in an acoustic arrangement with the participation of exclusively harmonica and guitar, although the musician himself was already interested in rock and roll techniques. Despite the fact that, according to critics, the album turned out to be far from ideal in technical terms, the compositions were to the liking of the public, and the song Blowin 'in the Wind came in handy in the fight for the rights of blacks. This track began to be covered by other performers, and later even sounded in the cult film Forrest Gump, in which Tom Hanks played the main role.
In 1964, Dylan released two albums in a row. The compositions of the first disc are still filled with protest moods. The second album includes original songs by Bob Dylan, performed this time in the rhythm and blues style. Critics separately emphasized Bob's complex poetic texts - the musician's long-term passion for world poetry affected. At this time, the musician is becoming more and more popular, the photos of Bob Dylan appear, perhaps, in the collection of every music lover, and each Bob performance becomes a real event in the world of music.
The next year was for Dylan under the sign of folk rock. The musician releases already well-known songs with a new arrangement. At the same time, Bob gathered a rock group and recorded the disc Bringing It All Back Home. However, the new beginnings in Bob's work at first did not meet with understanding among the fans: they expected new songs from the idol expressing social protest. At a folk concert in Newport, the musicians were even booed. In the same year, the musician recorded a rock album called Highway 61 Revisited. Bob Dylan's song Like a Rolling Stone, which preceded the release of the disc, remains relevant to this day.
After the release of the album, the musician goes on tour. At the same time, in 1965, Bob Dylan's book "The Tarantula" was written. By his own admission, Bob drew inspiration from the distinctive, vibrant and protest literature of Kerouac and Burroughs. The next year was marked by the appearance of the album Blonde on Blonde, which continued the so-called rock trilogy of Bob Dylan. In 1966, Bob was in a serious motorcycle accident. Recovering from trauma and shock, the musician lived in seclusion for some time, collecting material for the next disc and experimenting with performance styles and musical genres.
The result of this kind of sabbatical was the album John Wesley Harding, which was released in 1967. The compositions from this disc are an incredible mixture of rock and country music. Thus, a new trend in world music was born - country rock. Oddly enough, Bob Dylan's new hobby again did not like the existing fans, but gave the musician admirers from among country lovers. Also, the album was favorably received by both critics and Dylan's stage colleagues: compositions from this disc began to be sung by venerable performers, one of whom was the legendary Jimi Hendrix.
After some time, Dylan moved to Nashville, then considered the capital of country music. The musician continues to experiment with the style of performance and even the timbre of his voice. The result of this creative quest was the Nashville Skyline disc, recorded in collaboration with Johnny Cash. In the early 1970s, rumors circulated that Dylan was "bored" and was going through a creative crisis. The musician really had a hard time: the frantic pace of work and touring affected, but Bob continued to record new albums. October 1970 presented Dylan's fans with the New Morning album, which became a hit for many years.
In 1973, Bob Dylan's song "Knockin 'on Heaven's Door" appears. Until now, many fans of the musician consider this composition the best in Dylan's career. This composition became the soundtrack to the motion picture "Pat Guerrett and Billy the Kid", in which Dylan tried himself as an actor. A couple of decades later, the track "Knockin 'on Heaven" became the leitmotif of an unusually touching film of the same name. This film is starred by Jan Josef Lifers and Til Schweiger.
A year later, Bob records another Planet Waves album and immediately embarks on a big tour of America's cities. These tours would later be called the most lucrative rock touring history ever. At the end of the tour, Dylan released Before the Flood with live recordings. And already in 1975, the musician presented the album Blood on the Tracks, the songs from which turned out to be very personal: the musician shared his own experiences with fans. The success of this disc was colossal.
Inspired by the crazy popularity, the musician organized the next big tour, which lasted almost a year. These tours took place with the participation of A. Ginsberg, The Band, Mitchell and other famous performers. Album Slow Train Coming, released in 1979, marked a new milestone in the work of Bob Dylan: the musician was seriously carried away by the theme of Christianity. Bob came out as a fierce opponent of pornography and prostitution. This disc, like some of the subsequent albums by Bob Dylan, turned out to be a failure: fans refused to accept the new Dylan.
Despite this, the musician goes on a big concert tour again. In 1985, Bob performs in Moscow. This concert influenced the development of the Soviet rock movement: Boris Grebenshchikov, Mike Naumenko and other musicians who are just starting their stage will try to adopt the style of Bob Dylan's performance. In 1988, Bob announced the start of an endless tour, which he named the Never Ending Tour. This tour is really not over to this day. The 2000th performance of the tour took place in 2007 in Dayton, Ohio.
The 25th album, Under the Red Sky, was released in the early 1990s. This disc also became a failure, despite the fact that such musicians as Alice Cooper, Elton John, George Harrison took part in the recording. This failure negatively affected Bob Dylan: for another seven years, the musician will not release new discs. In 1997, Dylan suffered serious heart problems. The musician was even hospitalized, but everything ended well. In the same year, Dylan attended the Pope's sermon in Bologna, based on the words of the composition Blowin 'in the Wind.
Then, in 1997, the musician was invited to a meeting with Bill Clinton, then the President of the United States. In a festive atmosphere, Dylan was nominated for the Kennedy Center award. Such a weighty recognition inspired Bob: after a while, Dylan released the album Time Out of Mind, which again surprised fans. It seemed that in the new songs the musician was trying to break ties with his own musical past. This album was received positively by critics and listeners. In 1999, Bob received Oscar and Golden Globe awards for the composition Things Have Changed, which was used as a soundtrack to the movie "Prodigies".
The next disc was not long in coming: in 2001 the album Love and Theft was released. This album again showed the versatility of Dylan's talent, this time trying himself as a jazzman. The Modern Times album, released in 2006, also proved to be popular. Critics noted that the musician's voice became rougher due to age, but the album was received favorably. This disc earned the musician a Grammy award for the best solo rock project.
The poetry of Bob Dylan's lyrics, which was constantly noted by critics, gave Bob Dylan a Pulitzer Prize. This award, presented to Dylan in 2008, celebrates the musician's influence on world music culture. A year later, Dylan received another honorary award: Barack Obama, then President of the United States, presented the musician with the Medal of Freedom, one of the most honorable US state awards.

Films
In addition to music, Dylan was also interested in film art. The musician acted as a composer for several films, and also tried himself as an actor in the films "Renaldo and Clara" and "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid". Bob Dylan's songs have become soundtracks for more than six hundred films. Among them are "Easy Rider" by Peter Fonda (song It's Alright MaI'm Only Bleeding), "Keepers" by Zack Snyder (composition The Times They Are a-Changin '), "Big Lebowski" by the Coen brothers (track The Man In M ).
In 2003, Bob even wrote the script for the film Show of the Century, hiding the big name under the pseudonym Sergei Petrov. Unfortunately, despite the stellar cast, this picture never became popular. In 2005, the painting "No Turning Back: Bob Dylan" appeared. This film tells about five years in the life of a musician: from 1961 to 1966. The events of the film cover the period that began with the musician's move to New York and ended with that tragic motorcycle accident.
The film was directed by the great Martin Scorsese, who managed to convey the character of Dylan, his experiences and inner world on the screen. Moreover, this film surpassed the story of one performer in scale: Dylan and other musicians tell about a long era in the world of music, the history of musical movements of that time. The picture was to the taste of both Dylan's fans and just music lovers.
fact
Personal life
Bob Dylan's personal life turned out to be no less intense than his musical career. The musician's first adult love was a talented artist named Seuss Rotolo. The young people met in 1961. A photograph of the beautiful Seuss can be seen on the cover of Freeweelin '. Unfortunately, this relationship broke up: the girl did not have enough attention from one lover. Soon after the breakup, Seuss moved to Italy.
Dylan was seriously worried about the loss of his beloved. The musician's feelings were embodied in the song Boots of Spanish Leather. A year later, Seuss Rotolo returned to America, the relationship with Dylan lasted for some time, but in the end, the girl finally broke the musician's heart. Dylan expressed pain in the next song Ballad in Plain D. In the 1960s, Dylan's heart burned with love again. This time Joan Baez became the chosen one of the already established musician. The girl also sang folk songs. The love union of the two musicians also became a creative union: Joan sang many compositions written by Bob, for example Blowin 'in The Wind. However, this relationship ended: in 1965, the couple broke up.
Then the actress Edie Sedgwick, the young singer Dana Gillespie and the charming Playboy model Sara Lowndes became the musician's lovers. It was Sarah who managed to take possession of Bob Dylan's heart for a long time. The lovers got married. The musician dedicated the composition Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands to his first official wife. This marriage gave Bob Dylan four children. However, even this fact did not save the relationship from breaking up: in the 1970s, Dylan realized that the woman who was next to him did not understand him at all. The musician broke up the marriage and, as they say, went all out.
Bob Dylan changed his mistresses, trying to find the one, the only one with whom the relationship will bring the long-awaited understanding. The search was crowned with success: Carolyn Dennis, the backing vocalist of Bob's musical group, became Dylan's second wife. The second marriage gave the musician daughter Desiree Gabrielle Dennis-Dylan, who was born in 1986. Unfortunately, in 1992, the couple broke up, and since that time Bob Dylan is considered an enviable bachelor.
fact
Bob Dylan now
Now Bob Dylan, despite his advanced age, is still touring to the delight of fans. In 2016, a curious situation occurred: Bob Dylan was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, noting the musician's contribution to the development of songwriting in the United States.
The humor consisted in the fact that the news of the award Dylan simply overslept, because in the evening of that day he was scheduled to perform in Las Vegas.
