Biography
First photographer and painter, Robert Bresson benefited from a Catholic education, which will strongly mark his work. He was over thirty years old when he launched into the cinema, with the production of the short film Les Affaires Publiques, in 1934. Five years later, he collaborated with René Clair on a project that the Second World War had just annihilated . The rise of Bresson, prisoner of a German camp, was then abruptly interrupted, and it was not until 1943 that he signed his first feature, a drama entitled Les Anges du sin. Dialogued by Jean Giraudoux, the film, sober, even austere, and whose action takes place in a convent, lays the foundations for a separate work.
In 1945, Robert Bresson freely adapted Diderot with Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne. The film, with dialogues by Jean Cocteau, is freshly received by the public and marks the director's break with the classic aesthetics and dramaturgy of the seventh art. Dissatisfied with the performance of his actors, he made a radical choice that he would respect throughout his career: directing non-professional actors. In 1951, he wrote The Journal of a country priest, awarded in Venice and laureate of Louis-Delluc, which imposed a powerful style, where the influence of painting and religion is clear.
Unclassifiable but major, so apart that it cannot be linked to any real movement, Bresson then pursues a career devoid of compromise. A spiritual filmmaker, he tends towards sobriety, refinement, stripping, even abstraction, with films such as Un Condemned to Death Escape (1956, Prix de la mise en scene at Cannes) and Pickpocket (1959) . With him, the narration evolves, the off-screen benefits from a primordial place, and image and sound must be treated on the same scale. Thus, he distinguished himself by refusing the notion of “cinema”, preferring to evoke that of “cinematograph”, which he defined as “writing with moving images and sounds”.
A perfectionist, obsessive artist, some would say, Robert Bresson signed Le Procès de Jeanne d'Arc in 1962, then, four years later, At Random Balthazar. Considered by some, including Jean-Luc Godard, as one of his strongest works, this film depicts Evil through the journey of a donkey. After having doubly adapted Dostoyevsky (A Sweet Woman, 1969; Four Nights of a Dreamer, 1971), Bresson, whose most regular theme remains that of redemption, returns to the period film, twelve years after Joan of Arc , with Lancelot du Lac.
With his last films (The Devil probably and L 'Argent), Robert Bresson will not deviate an inch in his artistic journey, particularly demanding, very far from the canons of a spectacular and theatrical cinema. With only a dozen feature films to his credit, he is considered a major filmmaker who has deeply marked the history of cinema. Since 2000, every year during the Venice Film Festival, a prize in his name has been awarded to those whose work is "significant by its sincerity and intensity in favor of the search for the spiritual meaning of our life."
