Biography
A graduate of the University of Texas in artistic studies, Robert Benton worked as an illustrator and then as artistic director at Esquire magazine . He then began to write the screenplay for Bonnie and Clyde with David Newman. The success being there, the two men collaborate again in the writing of the libretto of the musical It's a bird it's a plane it's Superman , created in 1966 on Broadway.
Taken under contract by Warner Studios, Robert Benton and David Newman write the screenplay for Reptile (1970) for Joseph L. Mankiewicz. The tandem continues with the script of On s'fait la suitcase, doctor? (1972) for Peter Bogdanovich. The same year, Robert Benton embarked on the production of his first feature film, Bad company,in which Jeff Bridges plays a young refractory during the Civil War.
This was followed by the staging of the detective comedy The Late Show in 1977, then the writing, in collaboration with David Newman and the novelist Mario Puzo, of the big production Superman (1978). The year 1979 marked a turning point in Robert Benton's career: the latter wrote and directed Kramer against Kramer, a family drama in which a father separated from his wife tried to obtain custody of his young son. This feature film won five Oscars: Best Film, Best Screenplay, Best Directing, Best Actor for Dustin Hoffman and Best Actress for Meryl Streep.
The director then finds these two actors who brought him luck: Meryl Streep, whom he directs alongside Roy Scheider in the thriller Death at Auction (1982), and Dustin Hoffman, who plays the gangster Dutch Schultz in Billy Bathgate (1991). In the 80s, he alternated family saga against a background of Depression with The Seasons of the Heart (1984), winner of the Oscars for Best Screenplay and Best Actress for Sally Field, and police comedy with Nadine (1987), played by Kim Basinger .
Faithful to his actors, Robert Benton twice directs Paul Newman in a dashing sixty-year-old in An Almost Perfect Man (1994) and as a private detective in the thriller The Magic Hour (1998). The director then waits five years before making his return to cinema with The Color of the Lie, the story of a university professor (Anthony Hopkins) with a heavy past living a scandalous affair with a mysterious woman (Nicole Kidman) .
