Biography
After a Catholic education with the Jesuits and a stint at the Wentworth Military Academy in Lexington, Robert Altman graduated from the University of Missouri with an engineering degree in hand. When war broke out, he joined the army and found himself a co-pilot in the US Air Force . Interested in cinema, he moved to Hollywood where he was a jack of all trades (figuration, script, radio, etc.). He managed to sell two of his scripts: Christmas Eve and Bodyguard, which Richard Fleischer shot in 1948.
Back in Kansas City, he worked as a driver at Calvin Compagny, an industrial film production company, before starting to edit and direct institutional short films. In 1955, he directed his first feature film (which would not be released until two years later), The Delinquents. The success of his documentary on James Dean allows him to direct for television many episodes of famous series such as Bonanza or Alfred Hitchcock presents .
In 1963, he created his production company, Lion's Gate Films, and shot Countdown with James Caan and Robert Duvall in the main roles. But he had to wait until 1970 and his satirical MASH, Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, to gain international recognition. Robert Altman then tried all registers by shaking up their codes: the western (John McCabe; 1971), the thriller (Le Privé; 1973) and the intimate film (Trois femmes; 1977).
The director (also screenwriter and producer) manages to create his own universe: many separate stories that end up intersecting and an ironic, amused look at his fellows. The first opus of the genre is Nashville (1975), a choral film with a host of actors including Ned Beatty, Karen Black, Keith Carradine and Geraldine Chaplin. But at the end of the 70s, Robert Altman recorded a series of failures (A marriage, Quintet and Popeye) and decided to settle in New York where he went back to working for television.
It was not until 1992 that he returned in force to the front of the film scene by attacking Hollywood in The Player. In the 1990s, he continued to observe society with a willingly cynical gaze. In Prêt-à-porter (1994), he attacks the world of fashion, self-righteous America in Short Cuts (1993) (Golden Lion in Venice) or even politics with Kansas City (1996). At the dawn of the 2000s, the whole of Hollywood competed to shoot under his direction: the female trio Liv Tyler / Glenn Close / Julianne Moore in Cookie's fortune (1999) or even the coveted Richard Gere in Doctor T and women ( 2000).
In 2001, Robert Altman stages a detective plot set in the English aristocracy for Gosford Park. The following year, all of his work was honored with an Honorary Bear at the Berlin Festival. Eclectic, he radically changes register by filming the ups and downs of a ballerina (Neve Campbell) in The Company (2003), then, follower of big- cast films , he invites Meryl Streep, Kevin Kline, Tommy Lee Jones and Lindsay Lohan to participate in her Last Show, mocking the world of radio.
