Biography
Born to Russian Jewish parents who immigrated to the United States, the young Richard Brooks aspires to embark on a career as a journalist after completing his studies. In the 1930s, he worked as a sports reporter for the daily Philadelphia newspaper "Philadelphia record", then became a columnist for a New York radio station. In parallel with this professional activity of the most involved, he is passionate about the theater, and stages several plays on Broadway.
After serving in World War II while staying in the United States for two years - a period during which he found the time to write his first novel which would later be adapted into a film (Crossfires in 1947) - Richard Brooks is goes to Hollywood for a career. He begins by writing scripts in which his talent is felt, as well as one of the most important aspects of his career: his enthusiasm to speak out against various forms of oppression. In Les Démons de la liberté (Jules Dassin, 1947) for example, Brooks protests against the abuse of power on the part of the leaders, through the struggle of a group of inmates against the tyrannical supervisor of a similar prison. to a real fortress.
In the 1940s, Richard Brooks wrote several screenplays giving rise to as many films (including The Killers revealing a certain Burt Lancaster), then was entrusted with his first production, by MGM, with Case of Conscience in 1950. Faithful to its principles , the young filmmaker here attacks the dictatorship in Latin America, with Cary Grant in the lead role. It is also partly thanks to the latter that the project succeeds, the actor insisting strongly with the producers that it is Brooks and nobody else who is in charge of the staging of the film.
With this first successful experience, he continued his momentum by directing several films that started in the 1950s (his most prolific decade). In any case, the situations and characters present in his films can be seen as being at the service of his ideals. Thus, Bas les masques (1952) focuses on a journalist symbolizing freedom of expression, Sergent la terreur (1953) calls into question the excess of severity of military leaders, Graine de violence (1955) points out the dysfunctions inherent in American education system, and The Last Hunt (1957) asserts Indian rights.
At the end of the 1950s, Richard Brooks turned more towards adaptations of literary works, which did not prevent him from making several masterpieces of the seventh art. This is the case of the Brothers Karamazov (1957) and especially The Cat on a Hot Roof (1958), big critical and commercial success allowing him to receive his first Oscar nominations for Best Director and Best Film. He then directed Elmer Gantry le charlatan (1960), criticizing the commercial excesses of religion and also symbolizing the beginnings of the filmmaker's total independence from the big studios. Thanks to this film, Brooks won the Oscar for Best Screenplay, and his favorite actor Burt Lancaster was crowned Best Actor.
From the 1960s, even if he was no longer as active as in the previous decade, Richard Brooks continued to vary the genres giving rise to unforgettable films. After Lord Jim in 1965 - an ambitious project that ended in commercial failure - he directed The Professionals the following year, considered by many film buffs to be one of the best westerns ever made. In 1967, he adapted Truman Capote's novel "De sang-froid" in an eponymous film, in which he denounced the death penalty by resorting to several radical artistic biases (documentary style accentuating the coldness of the scenes, use of black and white, unknown actors playing the two killers, etc.).
After these two masterpieces, his pace of work slows down again in the 1970s and 1980s, which does not prevent him from continuing to tour with the greatest, such as Gene Hackman (La Chevauchée sauvage, 1975), Diane Keaton (In Search of Mr. Goodbar, 1977) and Sean Connery (Live Murders, 1982, his penultimate film before Game Fever three years later). On March 11, 1992, Richard Brooks died of a heart attack. He leaves behind several cult films, testifying to the exceptional career of a brilliant and committed artist.
