Richard Attenborough

Born in Cambridge, Richard Attenborough began his studies in Leicester and continued at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, where his passion for theater and cinema was born. Noticed by the impresario Alan Parker, he took his first steps on stage in 1941 then made his screen debut in 1942 in In Which We Serve by Noel Coward and David Lean.

After having worked in the cinematographic service of the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, he returned to the cinema directed for the first time by John Boulting in The Great Adventure in 1945. In the 50s, he appeared in some of his comedies. success including Apres moi le deluge in 1959. There followed a series of emblematic films of the British production of the time and the founding with Bryan Forbes in 1959 of the production company Beaver Films Ltd. At the beginning of the 80s, after The Human Factor by Otto Preminger, Attenborough put his acting career on hold in order to devote himself mainly to directing, for ten years. His first feature film, Ah god that war is pretty in 1969, is a satire of war and nationalism in the form of a musical. Sarcastic, squeaky and unconventional, the film causes a scandal. Attenborough had his biggest success in 1982 with Gandhi, a project which required twenty years of effort and which was a real international triumph, awarded three Oscars (best film, best director and best actor Ben Kingsley) and five British Academy Awards . In Cry Freedom (1987) with Kevin Kline, Attenborough is cautiously interested in a great cause, apartheid. After Chaplin (1992), a scrupulous hagiography of the famous actor-director, in which again plays Anthony Hopkins with whom he also turns a melodrama, Les Ombres du coeur in 1993. Le Temps d'aimer in 1997 is an evocation of the youthful idyll which inspired Ernest Hemingway's Farewell to Arms .
