Biography
When René-Lucien Chomette uttered his first cries, on November 11, 1898 in Paris, the cinema was 3 years older, and they would wait a while before meeting. Raised in the French capital, he became a volunteer ambulance driver at the twilight of the First World War, and then tried his hand at journalism, in the columns of "L'Intransigeant" , where he signed his articles under the name of "René Després". An activity that he continued, a few years later, by directing the cinema supplement of the review "Theater and Comoedia Illustrated" .
In the meantime, he becomes René Clair and takes his first steps in front of the camera, landing roles in Le Lys de la vie or Parisette, produced in 1921, and does not take long to want to go behind, since it was in 1923 that 'he directed Paris qui dort, a medium-length film tinged with the fantastic in which he already displayed the poetry that would characterize his cinema. But it was above all the following year that he signed his first coup: requested by the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées to deliver a short film to them to be broadcast during the intermission of a ballet, he caused a scandal with his "Entr'acte" of Dadaist inspiration.
More classic, even if they confirm their author's taste for the fantastic, Le Voyage imaginaire (1925) and La Preie du vent (1926) calm the game down a bit, as do its silent adaptations by Eugène. Labiche which are Un chapeau de paille d'Italie (1927) and Les Deux timides (1929). But it was the arrival of the talking language that gave a boost to the career of René Clair, whose name began to cross borders following the release of Sous les toits de Paris (1930), where the fantastic left place for a social discourse and poetic realism, of which he is one of the figures alongside Julien Duvivier and Marcel Carné.
A trend confirmed by Le Million and, above all, A nous la liberté, a satire in which the Tobis, his German production company, will see a precursor of Charles Chaplin's Modern Times (1936), which René Clair has always refuted. It must be said that at this time, the latter had other concerns in mind, and in particular the failures of Last Billionaire (1934) and Fausses Nouvelles (1936), barely overtaken by the success of Ghost for Sale (1935), that he shoots in London. Back in France, he saw the shooting of his next film interrupted by World War II and fled to New York, after passing through Spain and Portugal.
A refugee on the other side of the Atlantic, the filmmaker took advantage of the welcome he received to restore his health by signing four feature films, among which My wife is a witch (1942), where he iconizes the actress Veronica Lake, and Ten small Indians (1945), considered one of the most faithful adaptations of "Ten Little Negroes" by Agatha Christie. The conflict and this enchanted parenthesis over, René Clair returned to France, where he returned to success, thanks to Silence est d'or (1947), then La Beauté du Diable (1949), transposition of the myth of "Faust" on large screen, where he began a collaboration with Gérard Philipe.
The two men did not take long to meet again, since the actor was then on the bill in Les Belles de nuit (1952), where a certain Brigitte Bardot began, and Les Grandes maneuvers (1955), René's first color film. Clair, who won the Louis-Delluc Prize at the same time, and then directed Georges Brassens (in his own role) during the Porte des Lilas period, based on a novel by René Fallet. The first filmmaker elected to the Académie Française in 1960, however, he suffered the full brunt of the advent of the New Wave, which made him one of his Turkish heads.
Having become rarer, he took part in sketches films (La Française et l'Amour and Les Quatre Vérités), then signed his last two solo feature films (Tout l'or du monde with Bourvil and Les Fêtes galantes with Jean-Pierre Cassel), before devoting himself to theater and comics, to respond to a request from the French Academy. Died on March 15, 1981, he distinguished himself for the last time in the cinematographic field at the 1974 Cannes Film Festival where, as President of the Jury, he offered the Grand Prix and that of the Scenario to two Americans on the rise: Francis Ford Coppola and Steven Spielberg. A fair return of things for this French director to whom Hollywood had allowed himself to shine.
