Raymond Manuel Toro-Ortiz is known to the world as Ray Toro, the guitarist of the band My Chemical Romance. Despite the fact that the guy did not strive to be a member of a touring group, but dreamed of composing music, he became famous thanks to his virtuoso playing the solo guitar, standing on a par with the best masters of the rock scene.

Ray was born in 1977 in the American town of Kearney, New Jersey. The atmosphere in which the child grew up was far from prosperous: in the neighborhoods where the musician's childhood passed, street murders became commonplace, and drug dealers were often found among the neighbors. Parents, as best they could, protected children from bad influence. The world of music, to which his older brother introduced him, helped Thoreau not to touch the dirt.

The boy did not like to read, but to plunge into the atmosphere of classic rock became a favorite thing. The guitarist admits that he continues to listen to the same music from which he was a fan in childhood: Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Tony Iommi and Jimmy Page inspired the guy and ultimately influenced his style of playing.

His favorite bands were Led Zeppelin, Iron Maiden, The Beatles, The Doors and Metallica, and he began to imitate them, playing a guitar donated by his brother. At the same time, Ray had a passion for the classics, the harmony of which opened up new horizons for him. And instead of walking the dangerous streets, Thoreau focused on making music, which began to bear fruit.

As a teenager, the guitarist played in groups, but after graduating from school, he suddenly decided to take up cinema, for which he entered the William Patterson University. However, the young man did not stop playing instruments, and soon drums, keys and a bass guitar were added to his arsenal.

The musician is happy in his personal life. In the fall of 2008, Ray married his beloved friend Krista, and on December 16, 2012, the guitarist became a father. The birth of a son coincided with the period when My Chemical Romance decided to suspend its activities. Despite his affection for the group, Thoreau felt joy and relief as, after being freed from work, he was able to focus entirely on his family.

Ray began to enjoy spending time with his wife and raising a child. He remembered how his bandmates were forced to "skip" the childhood of their offspring, devoting themselves to touring and recording albums. Being a happy family man, Toro also leads a healthy lifestyle, loves jogging and monitors weight, with a height of 178 cm, preventing the appearance of extra pounds.

Popularity did not spoil Ray's character: he remains a generous, friendly and modest guy, always polite with fans. Unlike most colleagues in the rock scene, who are accustomed to shock the audience with a defiant image and numerous tattoos, Thoreau does not seek to look catchy. His main feature is his curly hairstyle. Only once he appeared in public with straight hair, and then after the experiments of Mikey Way, which he considered unsuccessful.

Ray liked to write music - glueing the individual fragments sounding in his head into a single whole seemed to him magic. However, his guitar skill proved to be valuable to his friends, who invited the guy to a new group. So in 2001, My Chemical Romance appeared - a group dealing with alternative rock, emo and post-punk. Gerard Way became its soloist. Thoreau got the background vocals and lead guitarist, Gerard's brother Mikey played bass, and Frank Iero played rhythm guitar.

In My Chemical Romance, Ray managed not only to become a virtuoso performer, like Brian May, but also to show composing talent, since the guy was involved in writing most of the songs and arrangements of the group. Already the 2nd album of rockers Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge, released in 2004, has gained platinum status. The songs Thank You for the Venom, Welcome to the Black Parade and Planetary (Go!) Became absolute hits.

My Chemical Romance disbanded after the recording of Danger Days. On their account, there are 4 studio albums and 15 video clips. Ray embarked on a solo career, releasing in May 2013 the song Isn't That Something, which he made himself "inside and out". The track turned out to be sustained in the style of neat, cheerful and polished pop-rock and set a further direction for development, namely a brighter and faster sound than that of My Chemical Romance, but with similar dominant guitars and a sense of longing.

In 2016, Thoreau released his debut album Remember the Laughter. It turned into a real challenge for a musician who hadn't done any writing or singing before. The release came as a surprise to listeners who saw Ray in a completely different role.

In October 2019, a surprise awaited fans of My Chemical Romance: the group announced a reunion after a long hiatus, which they took in 2013. It turned out that the musicians got together to work together back in 2017, but they kept it a secret. Ray Thoreau and his mates put on the epic Return show in Los Angeles on December 20, 2019.

In January 2020, a tour of North American cities began. On the official website of the group posted the schedule of concerts for the coming year, which covered Europe, Australia, New Zealand. A few months before the performances in a number of cities, tickets for them were completely sold out. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic, the tour had to be paused. If the world returns to normal, My Chemical Romance will also perform in Russia - on July 11 in Moscow and July 13 in St. Petersburg.
