Biography
The glory of the Brainstorm group begins with the success at Eurovision 2000: Latvia took part in the song contest for the first time and immediately won the 3rd place thanks to the five guys singing in the genre of alternative indie music. Today the band members can say that their cherished creative dreams have come true: the first lines of the charts, "golden" albums, full stadiums of spectators, world tours. But there are still many goals and new horizons ahead.
fact
Creation history and composition
The group, which is known and loved all over the world, was born in the small Latvian town of Jelgava, not far from Riga. Or rather, it all started with the friendship of five boys who studied at the same school and in the "music school".
The teenagers played in the school orchestra, sang in the choir, and when they came home, they played their own music. Janis Jubalts (guitar) and Gundars Maushevichs (bass) were the first to start creative experiments. Then Renars Kaupers (vocals) and Kaspars Roga (drums) joined the duo. The last to join the group was Maris Michelson (keys, accordion).
Soon, the guys realized that their creative five had developed as successfully as possible: everyone was in their place, everyone understood the genre idea of the music being performed, no one rushed forward and pulled the others back. The moment of this realization drew the line under the history of the group's creation. The guys announced the birth of the team. It was 1989, and the participants were 14 years old.
At first, the guys performed under the name "Blue Ink", then they changed it to the ambitious and cumbersome "Five best guys in Latvia". But once Kaspars' aunt, having attended one of the group's performances, described her impressions as follows:
The musicians liked this characteristic, they translated the name into Latvian, and it turned out "Prata Vetra". And they left "Brainstorm" for the conquest of the international public.
Then, at the dawn of their careers, they did not yet know that they could pass the test with copper pipes, maintain friendship and loyalty to the group. Even when bassist Gundars Maushevichs died in an accident in 2004, the musicians did not take a person into the permanent composition, posthumously securing a place in the team for a comrade. Since 2004 Ingars Vilums has been the session bassist of the group.

Music
The young group set a course for high-quality European rock, inspired by the grunge style. The debut album "Vairāk nekā skaļi" was released in 1993. It did not bring much success; in fact, only one song became popular - "Ziema" ("Winter"). At this time, creativity is only a hobby of musicians: everyone had a job that allowed them to survive. Renars worked in radio, Janis and Maris in judicial bodies, Kaspars worked as an operator. But they devoted their free time to a dream - they wrote songs, rehearsed, without losing faith in themselves.
And soon luck smiled at them: in 1995, the composition “Lidmasinas” (“Airplane”) “shot”. Her catchy motive was to the taste of Latvian youth. The hit became Super FM's song of the year and won a number of other awards. In the same year, Brainstorm performed with great success at the major international festival Rock Summer in Tallinn.
The guys released their second album "Veronica" in 1996. This includes the hits “Dārznieks” (“Gardener”), “Apelsīns” (“Orange”) and, of course, “Airplanes”. The large record label "Microphone Records" draws attention to the creativity of the guys, which is becoming more and more popular day by day. And the new album of 1997 “Viss ir tieši tā kā tu vēlies” (“Everything is exactly the way you want”) the guys are already recording in a good studio.
The perfection of the sound only enhanced the effect of listening to the disc, which produced the effect of an exploding bomb: the musicians included lyrical ballads, invigorating guitar hits, melodic soft-rock compositions in the new album. The disc broke sales records, soon going into the gold category. And "Prata Vetra" became famous throughout Latvia.
This was only the beginning of the triumph. The guys from Jelgava decided that it was time to go international. And the next English-language single "Under My Wing" was recorded in Germany, and the video was rotated throughout Europe. The success convinced the guys to start recording their debut international album "Among The Suns", which was released in 1999. The European public accepted the disc with a bang. The disc went platinum in Latvia and was reissued 17 times in other European countries.
The song from the album “Among The Suns” - “My Stars” - was chosen by the musicians for the Eurovision-2000 vocal contest in Stockholm. For the first time Latvia sent its applicants to the world review, and the question of who will represent the country was not decided for long - of course, "Brainstorm". The guys did not disappoint, having won an honorable 3rd place for the country, and for themselves - incredible prospects and the opportunity to become famous throughout the world.
After Eurovision, the guys from Brainstorm became stars. The performances of talented Latvians were noted by The Times, Melody Maker and Smash Hits. The guys had to change their names to those more familiar to foreign audiences: Renars became Reynard, Maris became Mike, Janis became Johnny, Kaspars became Nick, and Gundars became Peter. From now on, the guys are recording albums in national and international versions.
In 2001, the discography of the musicians was supplemented by the album "Online", which included the single "Maybe", which became the band's hit of all time. "Online" is the first and so far the only album of the band to receive gold status outside Latvia. Since then, performing abroad has become a common thing for guys.
Soon their childhood dream came true - the guys played as the opening act for Depeche Mode. The legendary rockers performed in Riga at the Skonto stadium, and 2 years later, in 2003, Brainstorm broke their record, gathering 25 thousand spectators at the same stadium.
2004 became a difficult year for the musicians: in the summer a friend and faithful colleague Gundars Maushevichs died, the guys continued work on the new album for the four of them, calling the new disc symbolically - "Four Shors". The album's main hits were "Thunder Without Rain", "Tin Drums" and "Lonely Feeling". The last single is known in Russia under the name "Wind", and the Russian version of the video was also filmed.
Now in Russia almost every music lover knows the Brainstorm group. The guys from Latvia began to conquer the Russian audience in 2009 by releasing a new disc "Step", which included 6 songs in Russian. Previously, they recorded joint tracks with the BI-2 group (Slippery Streets), with the musician, actor and playwright Evgeny Grishkovets and the Curler group (At the Dawn).
Now the band's albums are released in three languages - Latvian, English and Russian.
The theme of co-creation is close to the Brainstorm group. The album “There must be something” (“Tur kaut kam ir jābūt”) was released in collaboration with the Latvian rapper Gustavo as an experiment with hip-hop direction. The musicians also worked with Ilya Lagutenko and the Mumiy Troll group, Zemfira, the Georgian group Mgzavrebi, American artist David Brown, Comedy Women artist Marina Kravets and others.
In 2012, after the release of the album "Vel Viena Klusa Daba" (in English - "Another Still Life", in Russian - "Seagulls on the Roofs"), the musicians went on a large-scale world tour and visited with concerts on almost all continents. The following year the tour smoothly turned into festival trips: Latvians visited Sziget (Hungary), Rock For People (Czech Republic), Summer Sound (Latvia), Wings, Nashestvie (Russia).
In the spring of 2015, the band members presented their new album “7 soļi svaiga gaisa” for Latvia (“7 Steps of Fresh Air”), and in the fall the documentary film “Brainstorm: Between the Shores” was released, which tells about the 25-year history of the band. ...
The guys spent 2016-2017 mostly on trips. In the spring of 2016, we went on a tour of the UK, during which they also visited the Baltic cities and Russia, the final concert was held in the capital of Ireland, Dublin, with a full house.

Brainstorm now
On April 25, 2018, Brainstorm released the album Wonderful Day (Par to zēnu, kas sit skārda bungas). The video for the single of the same name was filmed at the International Space Station by Roscosmos cosmonaut Sergei Ryazansky.
The musicians also devoted a lot of time to their film debut - the guys for the first time took part in the filming of a full-fledged feature film "7 Dinners" directed by Kirill Pletnev. The band members play themselves, and, of course, the unforgettable Brainstorm music sounds off-screen.
The film will be released in 2019. At the same time, the famous four are planning to organize a grand show in their native Latvia.
