Biography
After a few years of modeling, Phoebe Cates began her film career in 1982, in Paradis and especially the teenage comedy Ca Chaud at Ridgemont high school, with notably a remarkable topless scene in front of Judge Reinhold. But it was in 1985 that the young American rose to fame with the main female role in the cult fantasy comedy Gremlins, a role that she would resume five years later in the sequel.
Phoebe Cates then illustrated herself in the comedy Private School, alongside Matthew Modine, then saw her career take a rather unusual turn. We see her giving the answer to French actresses (Arielle Dombasle in Lace and Emmanuelle Béart in Date With An Angel) or Michael J. Fox (Les Feux de la nuit). The productions are modest, but the castings always raised, as with A pause, four sighs, where she plays alongside Bridget Fonda, Tim Roth and Eric Stoltz. In 1989, Phoebe Cates married actor Kevin Kline, whom he had met a few years earlier during an audition for Friends First. The couple, who will have three children, give the cue in Princess Caraboo (1994) and The Anniversary Party (2000), which marks the last appearance on the screen of the actress.
