Biography
Prosper Bensoussan was born in 1930 in Morocco. After doing various odd jobs as a mechanic, electrician, storekeeper, insurer, hawker, Prosper Bensoussan moved to Paris. Enrolled in René Simon's course, the actor baptizes him "Philippe Clair", because Bensoussan is passionate about Gérard Philippe, and René Clair's film Le silence est d'or. Then, becoming Philippe Clair, he joined the Paris Conservatory where he rubbed shoulders with Jean-Paul Belmondo, Jean-Pierre Marielle and Jean Rochefort.
In 1956, Clair won the Bernstein prize for best young actor. He then began to act in theater and cinema in Des gens sans importance by Henri Verneuil, which marked his screen debut in 1956. A few years in the theater later, he moved on to direct his first comedy, Déclic and slaps with Annie Girardot. The film is a failure, and Clair turns his attention to television, records discs very oriented towards humor "Pied-Noir", and plays in the theater the play La parodie du Cid , which he will adapt to the cinema under the title de Rodriguez au pays des merguez (1980).
He returned to directing in 1971 with La Grande Java, which revealed Les Charlots at the cinema, then La grande maffia, which marked his meeting with Aldo Maccione, which he directed four other times. Their greatest joint success will be Plus beau que moi tu meurs (1982), which will exceed three million admissions. Philippe Clair defines his comedy cinema as "logic in the absurd", and he often gives free rein to the most incredible delusions and follies.
In line with this theme, we can cite his diptych of "Reformed" to which we should add These strange cops from elsewhere (1979). One can include in this movement The Big fanfaron, The Madness Brigade, and what remains one of his most delirious films: The Führer in Madness with Henri Tisot and Alice Sapritch. In 1984, Philippe Clair managed to get the American comic star Jerry Lewis for Where did you come from? We haven't seen you go out.
The rest of Clair's career was with Aldo Maccione at the head of the bill, always placed under the sign of comedy with Si tu vas à Rio ... tu meurs (1987), then a dramatic comedy, the only one of the Clair's career, which he describes as his greatest success (professional) and his greatest failure (in terms of entries): The extraordinary adventure of an unusual papa (1989). He plays there his son, Michael Clair, and the film tells how a dad will seek to find his child taken by his mother while he was away. This subject was very personal for Philippe Clair, who lived a similar situation with his daughter Béatrice, whom he did not see again until twenty years later.
This film was the last of the career of Philippe Clair, who never returned to film as a director. In 2010 and 2012, he participated in two short films, before returning to the stage for a one-man-show obviously entitled ... Shut up when you speak , named after one of his films with Aldo Maccione . In 2016, he appeared in the comedy documentary Yo! Beijing made by his son Estéban.
