Publications began to generate income, and the man decided to give up his teaching job in order to devote more time to writing. He took a part-time job as a faculty member at Westminster College, Oxford. During this period, Pullman took up the writing of the first part of the Dark Principles series, written in the genre of fantasy.
Northern Lights was first published in 1995. In the United States, the work is better known as the Golden Compass. In the center of the plot is a girl named Lyra Belaqua, who lives in a fictional world where there is a place for magic, magical creatures and fantastic animals.
